Thoroughly enjoyable book that somewhat mirrors present day history involving the struggle between the Muslim and Christian world.Though I am slightly biased as a Christian, I none-the less see the conflict that began the Crusades as being precipitated by Muslim forces, and that aggression exists even today, in the form of Jihad and ISIS! The book , though a short version of this historical record, paints an accurate picture of the successes and failures that occurred during some 200 years plus war. While the Christian faction started as a united front, soon spiraled out of control because of individual goals, whereas the Muslim faction had a more consistent and cohesive base. Neither side seemed to gain full victory, and only God will sort this mess out in time, and the Great I AM will most likely come down on the side of true Christian believers.

A friend suggested that I check out the Hourly History books as they're short books about things that have happened in history that you can read in an hour or less....That's probably pretty obvious already.I decided to read the Crusades first as it caught my attention.50 pages may seem too short to do the history of the Crusades justice, but they pack a LOT of information in those 50 pages. So much so that I felt lost more than once; I think you have to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of what the Crusades are to understand everything.I do have to admit that I was bored a time or two, but I will be checking out more of the Hourly History books.

Perfectly summed up in the quotation: '....most durable monument of human folly...'.Over 200 years of futile expense, fighting and deaths to achieve absolutely nothing …. all in the name of religion.I was not previously aware of Egypt being involved.Would have liked to know more about how so many soldiers moved such great distances, the logistics involved and how long it took. The back and forth movements of armies, changes in leaders and so many names thown into the mix made for confusing reading at times.

A refresher course in an hour - what a good idea! There are so many topics about which I would like to know a bit more without spending too much time on details. It is just my inquisitive nature, I suppose. I am glad to have discovered a series of books that serve my need for a "quick dip."I studied the Crusades at school years ago and have since seen many Hollywood versions, of course. It was good, however, to review the subject in this way. I intend to use these books quite often.

The Crusades appear to be a dark time in history with terrible brutality on both sides. All we usually hear is that "Christians" should feel guilty for it, when there were many more guilty of disastrous plans and decisions . i appreciated the author's balanced and factual approach. We study history to try to understand our world today . Thank you for these very readable and fascinating books.

this book is a very brief summary of the crusades, it does not give a detail explanation of why the crusades occurred

Fantastic. A presentation that is clear, and always to the point. Just start reading. If you have any interest in the history of The Crusades you won't stop till you've read it all.

This book does not give details of strategies, planning and the horrific killing by Christians that believed they were doing good while also being given a free ticket to heaven by God.

Amazon.com Review

"We have sought," write Peter Jennings and Todd Brewster, "to distinguish our story from other histories by holding each chapter up to a litmus test: Have we looked at this time from the perspective of someone who lived through it? And in doing so, have we captured a sense not only of the events of a particular era, but of the mood, the prevailing attitudes?" Thus, the experiences of ordinary men and women come to life in sidebars that appear throughout The Century. Sharpe James, the mayor of Newark, New Jersey, recalls the sense of excitement and possibility he felt when Jackie Robinson became the first black ballplayer in the major leagues. Gilles Ryan remembers what it was like to be a high-school student in Dayton, Tennessee, during the Scopes Trial. Connie Chang talks about emigrating to the United States from Korea and establishing a liquor store in Los Angeles, only to have it destroyed in the civil unrest. Comparisons to Harold Evans's The American Century are, perhaps, inevitable, but in addition to the emphasis on ordinary lives, The Century is further distinguished by the effective use of color photography (as well as several black-and-white shots). The book's sweeping narrative, shaped by Jennings and Brewster's comprehensive text, also flows a bit more smoothly than Evans's telegraphic prose; one can almost imagine Jennings reciting from these pages as he hosts the ABC/History Channel documentaries to which this book is a companion piece.

From Publishers Weekly

A companion volume to an upcoming 12-hour TV series on ABC News and 15-hour series on the History Channel, this is one of two major histories of the current century to appear this fall. The other is Harold Evans's The American Century, reviewed below. The Evans is the superior of the two, though both volumes have their strengths and weaknesses and either will make a splendid addition to anyone's bookshelf. Jennings is, of course, the news anchor at ABC, while Brewster is the senior editorial producer of the TV series allied with this book. Like the medium they're most involved with, the authors engageAvigorouslyAthe emotions more than the intellect, while offering little that most educated Americans won't already be familiar with, although their recitation of events and analysis of trends is solid, and they give more coverage to important recent events, such as the rise of the Internet, than does Evans, whose history ends more or less in 1989. Their writing is smooth throughout and the many eyewitness accounts to various events gives the book a personal immediacy that the Evans too often lacks. In essence, their book is a chronicle of glories achieved and disasters overcome. The treatment is episodic rather than thematic, and the chapter dealing with the decade since the fall of the Berlin Wall offers only a kaleidoscopic montage of events with no connecting thread. The array of photographsA125 full color, 425 b&wAis spectacular, however, and for many will be the primary reason to buy the book, as well as the Jennings name and the boost from the TV series, which could easily propel the volume onto bestseller lists. This excellent book gives us a broad overview of the 20th century. Wonderful in all aspects in regard to what it touches, though I wish it touched on some other areas as well. The greatest emphais is given to the United States, which is reasonable, since America was the 'dominant nation' of the century, but what it doesn't mention is what I find strange. The rise of our 'automobile culture,' and we American's becoming 'stay at home nomads' to coin a rather awkard phrase is gone into, but no mention of matching rise of automobile related sport. This may seem as if I am pushing an 'agenda', and possibly I am, BUT it is worth rememebering that the Indianopolis 500 is the only race in the WORLD, that has been held reguarly, in the very location, on the same track, for over a century. Baseball, that linchpin of American culture for so long, is not even mentioned, let alone one of the major scandals of the period... The World Series of 1919 and the Chicago 'Black Sox.'Despite those nitpicks, this book is excellent and well worth the money in every way... Well, okay one final 'nit.' The damn thing is printed on lead! It weighs a freaking TON!

If you were bored by history classes and history textbooks during your elementary or high school days and eventually turned off on the subject, this is the book that can awaken a new interest. However, for people under the age of 30 some of the events described are beyond their memory and may hold no more interest than an account of a marriage ceremony in ancient Persia. But for those who were alive during World War II and experienced both the recovery and the traumas that followed, the descriptions will evoke vivid memories and give pause when the text suggests better or worse conditions that could have followed. In Amazon there are other positive reviews of this book that provide additional reasons for buying it that need not be repeated here. Some negative reviews state the book is incomplete and superficial. Those miss the point. In the first pages the authors confess to the reader that their choices of events and level of detail were personal and selective. This book is not intended as a vehicle for research on world politics, disasters, and human achievement. Each chapter could be expanded into a whole volume. The approach that provides the value and readability that makes the book enjoyable is the skill demonstrated by the authors in first providing overarching and summary statements of the events and forces at work during each period, then zeroing in with clear, meaningful, and sometimes excruciating detail of moments in the life of individuals caught up in the event. There is pleasure in experiencing this swing between the general and the specifics of what happened in the last 100 years to humankind, but the reader should be prepared for the pain of being reminded that aside from a few unavoidable natural disasters, most of the suffering in those 100 years was brought on by human beings themselves. This book points out how people can be unexplicably cruel or act stupidly on the basis of little information. Although there are stories of extreme kindness and courage, this book describes a world that is not getting any better.

I had already had the book. I have given it to several friends and family. It's a fantastic book for those that don't have a lot of time to read. It would take you a long time to read it, but the way the book was formatted was done brilliantly by Jennings. He has a personal story about a real person's experience explained for each year of the century. Of course each year's stories were applicable to what was going on that year in our history

This is without a doubt the most incredible book to use for a Spine. There is a softer child's version that we aim to get for our son - this book is really good for very advanced 9th graders and 10th grade up. It is here folks. If you want to build your own World Studies program...in high school, using Notebooking and Essay methods.... LOOK NO FURTHER.This is an incredible book and well worth the money you'll pay for it. I should get another one before you can't get them anymore... just so I have a spare.

This is a coffee table book that should not be left to sit on the coffee table. Once you get started, it is very hard to put it down and walk away. This book is so well done, that you do not have to be a "history buff" to get into it. Granted, there are no surprise endings, for after all, history is history, but, I have found many items that I was not aware of, and found interesting and new photographs that easily caught my attention. "The Century" will captivate, enlighten and educate. This is the type of book which can easily allow you to say "I didn't know that", and not feel foolish for saying it. The authors stimulate your mind's juices, and you really can't ask for any more than that.

Peter Jennings did a fantastic job on this. Very well written and outstanding photography.

Wonderful publication. I gave it to my father for his 95th birthday gift. He absolutely loved it. To be recommended.

What a lovely way to remember the lives of relatives who experienced much of the 20th century. In addition to sparking many personal memories, it gives multiple generations much to talk about, compare and share. Well worth the "used book" money!

Images of animals are pretty realistic compared to the other brands. A great variety of animals are represented from common pets like cats to farm animals like cows to zoo animal like zebras and to aquatic animals like the octopus. The name of each animal is listed with the image. Some facts about the animal are also listed on the back of each card.BTW, my packet came with the penguin and jaguar on front, not the dolphin pictured. This did not bother ma any.... The dolphin is still inside on a card, just is not on the external cover.Only cons are:- two cards are generic "birds" and "fish." Either list a specific species OR include cards for all the general categories (mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, invertebrates).- most of the cards represent mammals. I would have liked to see more variety. Maybe the company could offer a second pack of cards with additional animals like invertebrates, more fish, fungi, plants, protist, bacteria, etc. Together these two packs would be AWESOME!

I bought these for my 2.5 year old. We are working on her learning more words. I love that on the back of the picture there are facts about the animal. This helps her to remember the animals. She likes to know what the animal eats. I ask her different questions, such as, "What do raccoons eat?" And she says, "fish". Some animals she doesn't know yet but i think with practice she should know them by the time she is 3. Flashcard cards work really well for us. It's fast pace, hands on learning. We get through a deck between 5 to 10 minutes. I try to do it 4 to 5 days a week with her in the mornings.

I like that the kids can see the spelling and really take in the card as we learn a little more about each animal. The information on the back of each card makes it easy to tell your little ones a bit about what they are looking at. And it is a plus that you don't have to flip the card over to see what animal they are seeing.

What a treasure! My baby loves flash cards so I collected quite a variety. This one is exceptional. I just wish all other cards are made like this. It's beautifully hand illustrated. Animals are all well posed, lifelike yet very sweet. Color rendering is sophiscated, colorful yet very soothing.Incredable accuracy, compare it with your field guide books and no detail is missed. One example, look at those ants carefully, and you can see little hairs on their body. I didn't know ants have hair until now.Details are adorable. While the main subject is unpretentiously clear, there is always a little more there that makes you want to look at the card a little more and smile, like the bear that's trying to catch the fish in the river, like the fox that's staring at a snail...The illustrator must have very advanced study of these animals. I want to know who he/she is and his/her name should be on the cards.

The pictures of these flash cards are fantastic! I bought 4 packs of cards from animals to numbers to shapes/colors, and this one is by far my favorite. Very detailed images. The picture of ants actually show hair on their tiny legs. Great visuals for toddlers learning animals. You will not regret this purchase!

Bought this as a Christmas gift for a child who loves animals. Got very good reviews from his parents.

I know the age says 4 and up, but I use them on my one year old, and she adores them. We use them everyday. My only complaint is that some of the animals are colored oddly, which is a little confusing.

These cards are perfect. I have a 3 year old and a15 month old and the 15 month old LOVES animals.
