My expectations for this book were not too high given that an active football manager has a lot to lose by being too candid. Also, I was expecting the book to focus more on drama rather than details about training methods and tactics. But I was pleasantly surprised to see how forthcoming Pep has been about his relationship with the club management at Barcelona and Bayern, about his views on certain players (and vice versa), and his training routines and tactical approaches. The book follows events chronologically, from Pep's signing with Bayern to the DFB Pokal final against Dortmund in May 2014. It gives a rather detailed account of how Pep wished to change the team and his general philosophy about football (developing a playing style to suit the players, his desire for his teams to control the game, his hatred of tiki-taka). There is also much discussion about the Bayern players (a lot about Lahm and Højberg), other team staff and the Bayern club management. What the book touches only on the surface are some of the more gossip-worthy topics: Uli Hoeneß and his tax problems, the deterioration in the relationship between Pep and Mandzukic, Kroos' contract talks. It also stops short of pointing out individual players who did not see eye-to-eye with Pep's tactics. The big surprise for me was the level of tactical detail offered for each game (including the major Champions League games). There is also plenty of material on the introduction of new training methods and some on players' diets as well. The tactics are discussed to the point where an avid fan will be interested, and is not a coaching manual. One thing to note is that the book portrays a highly positive image of Pep, which some might be put off by, but I find quite accurate based on my own fanatical following of Bayern's progress over the years. It also dispels a lot of the myths circulating in the media (Pep is turning Bayern into Barcelona, Heynckes was forced into retirement, Pep does not like Robben). I'm a Bayern fan, and a Pep fan now only by association (though I always respected him), but my own opinion of the man has certainly grown after reading this book.To sum up, this book is a fascinating read. Bayern and Pep fans will certainly enjoy it, and there is plenty of material for any avid football fan.

The kind of access that the author managed to get is unprecedented in the history of football. I am not sure what made Pep and the Bayern's senior management allowed such access but whatever the reasons, the result make a very interesting reading. As a Bayern fan I liked the insights into and the dynamics of the Bayern's management - how the club is run, how key decisions are made and who actually hold the real power. These insights are often very surprising and we learn in particular Rummeniege, Sammer and Hoeness provide Pep with very strong support and stand by him during good and bad times. We also learn a lot about the players and their personalities. The book focuses a lot on Pep as a person and his coaching principles and ideas. We also learn his non sporting side as we as his family and close friends. I found it rather fascinating that Pep has some very interesting friends such as top professors, world chess champions, etc. He comes across as someone complex, passionate and utterly devoted to football. The book also reveals quite of lot of the thinking, planning and also post match tactical analyses of many Bundesliga matches as well as the Champions' League games. Here we learn much about Pep's thinking and his playing and coaching principles. However on the flip side, the book side steps some key issues and incidents. It is no secret that Pep has some major disagreements with some key players. While we like to know about Pep and his philosophy, there were too many pages devoted to the "genius" of Pep and at times the author sound like some teenager with a serious crush on his idol. While the author generally knowledgeable about football, his tends to just report whatever Pep was saying, rather than try to explain what these mean to the general reader using diagrams to explain the tactics. As a result, a general reader without much exposure to football tactics will be lost in the tactics discussion.Lastly, I noticed numerous grammatical and spelling errors.

One became immersed in the book in order to try and learn what special methodology he has applied both in Spain and now in Germany. It is reveled that his secret to success if not that unusual. He works himself, his coaches and players to death. There seems to be no secret as to why he left Barcelona and spent some time away from the game. He had to be exhausted. The book covers his life away from soccer and his involvement off the field seems as intense as that on the pitch. He would be as well-rounded off the field as one could be in light of the pressure environments he has found himself in.Having been involved in viewing Champions League play while reading the book, Pep' 2015 Bayern Munich team obviously couldn't overcome a series of both injuries and not having a Messi on its roster. Finally while the author tries to describe Guardiola's tactical plans, he failed to recognize that pictures/diagrams are worth more than words. Diagramming each formation and where players were located in them would have aided greatly. Having coached the sport for over 30 years, I could understand the descriptive language used in revealing Pep's tactical plans. But I am not certain all readers did.

Joanna Moncrieff is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mental Health Sciences at University College London, and is co-founder of the Critical Psychiatry Network. She has also written books such as The Bitterest Pills: The Troubling Story of Antipsychotic Drugs,Straight Talking Introduction to Psychiatric Drugs,De-Medicalizing Misery: Psychiatry, Psychology and the Human Condition, etc.She wrote in the first chapter of this 2009 book, "Since the 1960s we have lived in an age characterized by the idea that drugs can cure the problems that are now referred to as 'mental illness'... By 'cure' I mean the idea that drugs can improve symptoms by helping to rectify the underlying pathological mechanism that is presumed to give rise to the symptoms in the first place... The story by which drugs first came to be seen in this way, as specific treatments for specific mental disorders ... and whether or not this way of thinking about drugs and their actions is justified, are the subjects of this book." (Pg. 1) She adds, "Over the following pages I hope to convince readers that the modern understanding of what drugs do in psychiatry ... is fatally flawed; that most knowledge about psychiatric drugs is, at best, only a partial acount. This is because it ... has been inspired and promoted by professional, commercial and political interests. This misconception has led to the misdirection of research, the misinterpretation of available evidence and the obstruction of a fuller and more accurate understanding of what psychiatric drugs do." (Pg. 2)She argues, "The disease-centered model has been imported from general medicine, where... most drug action can be appropriately understood in this way." (Pg. 7) She says, "This book concerns the creation of a myth, the myth of the disease-centered model of drug action, and how that myth could be accepted as a real description of the world." (Pg. 11) She adds, "I will... attempt to uncover the interests that led to the development and success of the disease-centered model of drug action and its accompanying model of psychic distress... I will outline an alternative 'drug-centered' approach that is consistent with a wide range of evidence, yields more information about what effects drugs have in different situations and forms a better basis from which to weigh the pros and cons of drug treatment." (Pg. 13)She points out, "A further problem with modern clinical drug trials is that people are usually dropped from the study once they relapse or if they stop the study drug for any reason. Therefore, there is no information about the ultimate outcome of these participants... In addition, we know that positive studies are more likely to be published than negative ones... and within published studies measures that show positive effects are reported and negative ones sometimes ignored ... Therefore, published data is likely to be inaccurately skewed towards showing beneficial effects of treatment." (Pg. 20-21)She concludes, "The data surveyed in this book suggest that psychiatric drug treatment is currently administered on the basis of a huge collective myth; the myth that psychiatric drugs act by correcting the biological basis of psychiatric symptoms or diseases... the evidence suggests that these drugs induce characteristic abnormal states that can account for their so-called therapeutic effects." (Pg. 237) She adds, "this book demonstrates the eagerness of the psychiatric profession to embrace the myth of disease-specific treatments. This is understandable, given the profession's long-standing battle to align itself squarely as a branch of the medical profession... From the beginning of the 20th century psychiatry sought to relocate its practice in general hospitals and outpatient departments. Drug treatments, if they could be presented as acting on a disease process, were well suited to this new environment... The psychiatric profession was supported in its aims by a State that was seeking technical solutions for various social problems. Psychiatry offered the possibility of transforming the complex political problem of how to manage psychiatric disturbance into a medical and technical issue... the ability to remove difficult issues of social control from the political arena was appealing... The new drugs... helped justify both the turn towards community care and the development of more medicalized legislation." (Pg. 243)This critique will be "must reading" for anyone studying the modern role of psychopharmacology---whether or not one always agrees with Moncrieff.

The book is a very clear and readable in-depth review of the profound deceptions, self and otherwise, of today's clinical psychopharmacology. As a psychiatrist and Harvard researcher, I am in full agreement with Dr. Moncrieff who has done a very courageous and thorough description of how and why great harm is being done to so many patients seeking help through many drug treatments.

So much information about the benefits of drug treatment for mental health problems comes from people who have a financial motive to sell drugs. It is worthwhile to look at the downside of drug treatment. This book does a good job of exposing the reader to the disadvantages of relying to much on chemical and electroconvulsant treatment. Helpful for consumers, their loved ones, and mental health professionals.

Excellent. Carefully argued, research based, important information

It is time we face the facts and start tossing our Zoloft more frequently into the wastebasket and less into our mouths; for the promises of contemporary psychopharmacology have failed to deliver. At least, that is how Joanna Moncrieff sees it in her book The Myth of the Chemical Cure--the more than one in ten Americans taking antidepressants notwithstanding. In this book, currently in its second edition, Moncrieff takes serious objection to contemporary psychiatric treatment as it involves the use of medication. This level of antagonism is only natural given that she sees the standard framework of understanding drug treatment as off base. The typical disease-centered (her term) account of drug action borrows unjustifiably from medicine: just as cephalexin assaults a particular problem-causing agent like streptococcal bacteria, Prozac assaults a particular problem-causing agent too--a chemical imbalance. But this is too much a stretch for the author, who proposes that we are on much stronger ground in looking at psychoactive medication through the lens of a drug-centered model (again, her term): just as ethyl alcohol consumption beyond a threshold produces brain-wide effects often adverse (decreased cognitive ability) and sometimes--in certain contexts and settings--desirable (social disinhibition), Prozac places the user under an altered brain state that may be theoretically desirable (increased mood; diminished anxiety) though with significant adverse effects (decreased libido; suicidal ideation).Just about everywhere Moncrieff directs our attention, the story looks pretty much the same. There are reports that the drugs seem to help a certain proportion of the population who takes them, amidst a torrent of unenviable side effects upon all who do. Antidepressants, neuroleptics, and stimulants are leaving in their wake a host of drug-dependent, libido-less, emotionally detached zombie-patients. Even where there appears to be some effectiveness, it is hard to shake the specter of placebo.Moncrieff is no mere contrarian pundit, and her report is not new. Rather she joins those who have already been questioning psychopharmacology for a few years now. A group represented by the voices of Irving Kirsch and Robert Whitaker. Certainly, with the poor results the aforementioned researchers have produced concerning antidepressants and antipsychotics, along with what Moncrieff herself brings to the table, her case for skepticism today is sound.I am not so ready, however, to abandon the psychopharmacological ship so completely. For one, nothing that might be said about drugs today implies anything about the drugs of tomorrow. And even if every new generation of drugs has come with the recognition that the prior generation was not the final answer as was thought or hoped, why must this require a deeply negative assessment of the motives behind all (or even most) who created and prescribed them to patients? Progress is the natural course of all science; and we can expect this to be the case with psychiatric medication as it is with non-psychiatric medication.Furthermore, I find Moncrieff--with her binary drug-centered versus disease-centered constructs--more framework-driven than those who make up the psychiatric establishment. Whatever their script-writing inclinations, I don't believe I've met a single psychiatrist or doctor who looks at psychiatric medication as the seamless shoring up of a faulty neurological disorder such that treatment ever comes without side effects. Moreover, the implication that real drugs made to combat real diseases meet such a standard is simply not true. The most novel of cancer and HIV/AIDS drugs are notorious for the side effects they can impart when taken. But this doesn't signify the illegitimacy of the disease concept or the drugs, does it? It's not even completely true that Moncrieff's own paradigm case for a "disease-centered" model of drug action--insulin for diabetes--comes without side effects, since those receiving insulin treatment occasionally report fatigue, tremors, hunger, and anxiety. Suffice it to say, the criticisms at times seem based on straw men.Still, if one can get past the framework mentality of Moncrieff's book, it makes for an informative read. At the very least, it contains considerations that any potential or current psychiatric medication patient will want to consider as they evaluate or re-evaluate their own treatment.

This is a scholarly work and hard to follow.

Great book!

Honest portrayal of the role drugs play in the treatment of mental illness.

Many years I ago I was a young busy mother, curious and interested in volunteering with those with chronic illnesses or approaching death. My dream was to volunteer at Bailey Boushay House in Seattle. (first hospice to welcome AIDS patients in the nation and now a hospice for AIDS and those with terminal illnesses) Many years later with kids grown and gone, I set out with a plan. That plan involved volunteering with Bailey Boushay House, returning to school in healthcare (Occupational Therapy) and enrolling in the End of Life Program at the Metta Institute (Frank Ostaseski, founder). I bought Franks' "Being a Compassionate Companion" CD as I embarked on my journey. Having listened to the CD, narrated by Frank and then attending the End of Life Practitioner Program, I can tell you, this book has so much "voice"! IT is like being in the same room having a conversation or lecture with this author. I think about what the movie "To Sir, with Love" taught us about life lessons that still resonate today, well THE FIVE INVITATIONS takes us on a journey where the "approach" to death is actually approachable and the birthing of new insight into the end of life is sorely needed in this world. I usually give away my books after reading them , not this one....it will be reread over and over. As I closed the last chapter, my eyes filled with tears......this book touched me in a deep and profound way......it leaves you "okay" with not having all the answers and a up close personal feel with a subject our culture avoids...

When I was 12, my mom died of cancer. It spread from her lungs to her brain, briefly going into remission to cruelly give us hope before slowly killing her. For years, I was mad at the world because of this and I turned that anger inward on myself. It was a poisonous way to live, mostly devoid of joy or love. No one could understand how I felt, I thought, so I wouldn't try to explain it to them. Over the last few years, I've learned how to stop poisoning myself. After finishing Frank's book last week, I have a whole new set of tools to use death to embrace life. I also have a new view: We all live and we all die, therefore we all have been touched by death in our own ways. If we haven't been touched yet, we will be. This, to me, means that love and compassion are the ways forward for humanity, even with our enemies or people we've fallen out with.Perhaps I sound like a flit yogi or Woodstock washout, but I'm OK with that if it means I don't have to be owned by pain and fear of death. I know that my mom is within me still in some way, even if just as a lovely memory. Perhaps you can catch of my same high and also gain some new tools for living more fully and with more love from Frank's book. It's very good - I found myself laughing, crying, and rapt by Frank's stories and knowledge at different points of the book. It's a very sweet, helpful, and compassionate book. Frank, who worked has at an end-of-life hospice in San Francisco for decades, has an intimate relationship with death. You'd think this would make him callous or cynical like my childhood self, but quite the opposite is true: he embraces death as reality and is therefore able to live more fully. You can embrace death for a more full life, too. Any of us who have had a relative die might remember their regrets or sorrows, the "I wish I could have.." or "I'm sad I won't be able to..." before death carries them away. We likely know what our own wishes and sorrows are; why wait until the end to address them? Why not learn from our loved ones?Frank's methods for using death to live a more full life are sound. "Don't wait" is his first invitation, and I'm sure we've all had opportunities and moments pass by while we said "Hm, maybe later." Well guess what? This happens with life, too. Don't wait. Frank's anecdotes - sometimes sweet, sometimes gut-wrenching - will help you see how his invitations have worked over the years. I was touched by the many people who died next to Frank, all who seemed to show an immense, seemingly improbable strength in the face of death. Frank's message: we can show this strength in life, too, but it may not necessarily be what we think of as "strength." Vulnerability can be strength, he writes. So can acceptance.Even if all you get from this book is the fact that death is part of life - one that shouldn't be treated as life's deranged cousin - then I think you'll have your money's worth. However, you'll get more than that.A very good book. Read, and then live. But be careful doing both at the same time- after all, we're trying to accept death here, not run toward it.

I was captivated by The Five Invitations, reading it cover-to-cover in a 24-hour period. As I got closer to the end, I found myself reading much slower because I just didn't want it to end. I was inspired by the stories of people both young and old at the end of their lives. The part that impressed me was that it was not just stories of inspiration on how I can embrace my days, but also I found wisdom as a new mom, and how to savor these moments with my little one more. There was a chapter about grief that hit me in a way that was very profound and moving, it opened up a place in my heart about a the loss of a dear friend many years ago, that just hadn't healed. Reading Frank's book gave me a new understanding on how to "be" with that loss and feel complete with it's incompleteness. Thank you for your beautiful book.

The Five Invitations are a guide to a life well-lived. For those who work with people at the end of life or with chronic illness, the book has obvious value. But this book is so much more - it's for all of us.Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a busy attorney, Frank's Five Invitations invite you to live fully, be present in your own life, and to completely immerse yourself in what it means to be human.I first met Frank when I was looking for a way to deepen my work with my clients - cancer patients who were being treated at a large NCI cancer center. What I learned certainly helped me with my work, but the unexpected "extra" was that I began to experience changes in myself and in all of my life as a result of these profound teachings.
