From Library Journal

A certain melancholy strikes halfway through this book when you realize that the majority of the roadside attractions it describes are no longer operating. Fortunately, these gator farms, candy stores, and motor courts have been preserved in postcard collections and treasured brochures, scattered liberally throughout this book. Hollis (Cousin Cliff: Forty Magical Years in Television, Campbells Pub., 1991) writes in a casual yet thorough style that makes him a fine tour guide for the trip. While there is a fair amount of information on the rise of tourism in the South, the majority of the book is concerned with the attractions lining the postwar roadways. There is a great deal to be learned about ourselves by looking at our idea of fun. While the cloth edition seems a bit expensive, this is a good source for anyone planning a trip down memory lane. A great look at the REAL Florida roadside attractions of days gone by. Some are still here though. Why go to a manufactured town when you can get the real Florida experience?

Of all the books on America's kitchy nostalgic rich past, nothing competes with this. It is hands down the best, and I've read them all. It is very well written and beautifully researched with incredible pictures. The author manages to impart his love for this period of America, and as such conveys a wonderful sense of nostalgia and family and kitchy innocence, when America was young and seemingly homogenous. A first rate first class effort!

A very fun book. Interesting tid-bits, and pics. Really enjoyed it!

Great memories! Loved it all. Reminded me of my family trips as a child in the 1960s. Wish there were color photos, though.

You may not see the things that were once where you are going, but you will at least have a better appreciation as to the history of your surroundings. I have always found this mans work to be well researched, and a brilliant reflection on the past.

This is an excellent resource of information on old roadside attractions but what a disappointment the visuals are. Half of the fun is seeing these places in color yet except for an 8 page section in the center all the rest of the book is small b/w photos of things you know had to be from color sources. It spoils an otherwise excellent resource.

I agree with the other reviewer in that the lack of color is a huge detriment to an otherwise pretty good book. I grew up in the 1960s and the family traveled to South Florida every year...I mostly remember the Sunshine State amd its attractions to be big and really colorful. Most of the photograghy in this book seems shrunk down and lacks detail. Countless times I found myself squinting and wishing the photos were bigger and in color. The book is informative and there are plenty of illustrations, but alas just "OK" because of all that darn B&W.

This would be a fantastic book if the pictures were in color, but they are not. Just black and white. What a disappointment! It is still worth getting.
