About the Author

Dr. Sandall is an assistant professor at the University of Washington in special education with a specialization in early intervention and early childhood special education (EI/ECSE). She has directed personnel preparation projects, developed curriculum materials for all age groups, and published materials on instructional strategies to facilitate optimal outcomes for young children with disabilities. Dr. Sandall is a board member of the Division for Early Childhood (DEC), Council for Exceptional Children, and an investigator on DEC's research project to synthesize EI/ECSE research practices and translate them to recommended field practices. She is also co-editor of DEC's Young Exceptional Children monograph series and co-editor of DEC Recommended Practices in Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education (with Mary McLean and Barbara J. Smith, Sopris West, 2000). Ilene S. Schwartz, Ph.D. is Professor at the University of Washington in the area of special education. Dr. Schwartz has an extensive background working with young children with special needs, specifically with young children with autism and other disabilities. Dr. Schwartz is the Director of the Haring Center for Research and Training in Inclusive Education at the University of Washington. Dr. Schwartz is the faculty advisor for the inclusive preschool and kindergarten programs at the Experimental Education Unit at the University of Washington, where she maintains an active line of research and personnel preparation activities. Dr. Schwartz is Principal Investigator of several projects, including a model demonstration project to develop school-based services for young children with autism, a research project to assess the differential effectiveness of preschool programs for young children with autism, and a personnel preparation program for early childhood education teachers who work with children with severe disabilities in inclusive settings. Dr. Schwartz has published numerous chapters and articles about early childhood education and social validity. She serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Early Intervention and Topics in Early Childhood Special Education. Mary Louise Hemmeter, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Special Education at Vanderbilt University. She teaches courses, advises students, and conducts research on early childhood issues. She is the cofaculty director of the Susan Gray School for Children, which is an early childhood program for children with and without disabilities. Her research focuses on effective instruction, social-emotional development and challenging behavior, translating research to practice, and effective approaches to professional development. Currently, she directs an Institute of Education Sciences–funded research project focused on the efficacy of implementing the Teaching Pyramid in classrooms, and she works on the National Center on Quality Teaching and Learning and the Office of Special Education Programs–funded Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Interventions. She is a coeditor of the Journal of Early Intervention and serves on the editorial boards of other major journals in early childhood special education. She served as President of the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division for Early Childhood (DEC) and received the Merle B. Karnes award from DEC. Hsin-Ying Chou, Ed.D., served as Research Assistant for the Early Childhood Research Institute on Inclusion (ECRII) at the University of Washington. She has worked with young children with special needs in Taiwan and the United States. Her professional interests include parent-professional relationships and decision making. She received her doctorate in education from the University of Washington in 2001. Dr. Horn is Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of Kansas. Dr. Horn focuses on the development of effective instructional approaches for infants and young children with developmental delays and disabilities. Her research examines how these effective strategies can be implemented within the context of ongoing routines and activities in inclusive environments. Dr. Horn is the editor of the journal Young Exceptional Children. Gail E. Joseph, Ph.D., Mental Health Specialist at the Head Start Bureau in Washington, DC. She completed her doctorate at the University of Washington and was Head Teacher in an inclusive Head Start classroom in the Experimental Education Unit. Dr. Joseph's research and practice focus on the social and emotional development of young, high-risk children and mental health interventions for children and families. She is co-author of the DEC Recommended Practices Program Assessment (with Mary Louise Hemmeter, Barbara J. Smith, and Susan R. Sandall, Sopris West, 2001). Joan Lieber, Ph.D., is Professor of Special Education in the College of Education at the University of Maryland. Her research interests include inclusion and teachers' beliefs and practices. She has 8 years of public school teaching experience. Dr. Lieber co-directs an early childhood special education model demonstration project that includes young children with disabilities in community-based programs. Samuel L. Odom is Director of the Frank Porter Graham (FPG) Child Development Institute and Professor of Education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to his work at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Odom previously served in faculty positions at Indiana University and Peabody College/Vanderbilt University. Dr. Odom received a master's degree in special education in 1976 and an educational specialist degree in educational psychology from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1979. He earned his doctorate in 1982 in education and human development from the University of Washington. Throughout his career, Dr. Odom has held positions as a preschool teacher, student teaching supervisor, program coordinator, teacher educator, and researcher. He has written many articles and chapters about programs for young children and their families and has served as the co-editor of five books on early childhood special education. Dr. Odom is an associate editor for Exceptional Children and is on the editorial board of Journal of Early Intervention, Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, Journal of Autism and Developmental Disabilities, and Early Childhood Research Quarterly. He received the Special Education Outstanding Research Award from the American Educational Research Association Special Education Special Interest Group in 1999, the Merle Karnes Contribution to the Field Award from the Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) in 2001, and the Outstanding Special Education Research Award from CEC in 2007. Dr. Odom's research interests include interventions and teaching approaches that promote social competence of young children, effective intervention approaches for children with autism, and early childhood curricula that promote children's school success. Ruth Wolery, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of the Practice of Special Education at Peabody College and Director of the Susan Gray School for Children. Prior to joining the Early Childhood Research Institute on Inclusion (ECRII) team, she spent years working in the public school system. Her current teaching and research interests focus on delivering high-quality services to young children with disabilities in inclusive preschool programs.

This Book is a "Goldmine!" The Preschool teacher and myself are sharing the book and it is so full of ideas! Some we are ready knew but it was a great refresher. The book will definitely get used with our special needs students this year.

One of the few books I had to purchase for graduate school that was actually worth buying. Finished reading it before class even started and read it again at the start of the school (preschool)year. Great resource with usable information.

The book came in great condition and in a decent amount of time. It is a good read to help with support at work with preschool children with special needs and their families.

Great for education!

I have been teaching in an inclusion classroom for three years and wish I had this book from the start! It is very easy to read and follow. They give you step by step directions for problem solving issues that may arise in the classroom, lots of ideas for solutions to those issues, super useful forms that are practical and make sense! I am very pleased with this book and recommend it to any early childhood teacher that works with special needs students.

An absolute must for teachers as they work with children. Good info and sheets to copy pertaining to the classroom.

This book has been wonderful for my clients who are a mature 3 to 5. It does a great job at portrayingthat we all get angry, but we need to learn how to handle our anger. And it is about a dinosaur! I find that kids are more willing to read about an animal than a person.

As far as I've seen, 'How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?' is the only truly good book in this series and the only one I'd ever recommend but this book comes in as a distant second.My main issue with the book is that in the beginning the dinosaurs throw tantrums and misbehave because they're mad, asking the question "Is this what dinosaurs do when they're mad?" but when we get to the resolution and they basically say "No, that's not how they behave" they then have the dinosaur go clean up the mess they made and apologize so....clearly they do behave that way?? I honestly wouldn't have cared so much because while the wording was a little confusing I still think teaching kids to apologize and clean up after throwing a tantrums is good; BUT on one page, clearly for the sake of rhyming, one dinosaur throws a mug at the cat and while he cleans it up at the end I just feel like that's a pretty terrible idea to put in kids heads and the conclusion of the book kind of made light of the seriousness of that action.

We love "How do Dinosaurs" books. In fact we pretty much have the entire collection. This book though only got 4 stars because when my 8 yr old son read it to his 3 brothers. (2 1/2 and 16 month old twins) they started acting "mad" and even ripped a book and threw toys, just like in the book. Great to add to collection but beware I would advise this more for 4 and up in which they know how to really get mad ( count to 10) like in the 2nd half of book. Young ones will just find the "mad" part more exciting.

This super fun series of books are sure to please all the dino lovers out there! My dino loving 4.5yr old can't get enough dinosaur books and I can't get enough of the creatively illustrated stories in this series as you journey through typical toddler and preschool behaviors with boundry testing, mood swinging picky"fun" (humorously illustrated) and still the undeniable love between parent and child. Great books to have in your little readers library! I do love these bigger, hard cover books, though personal preference may have others picking differently.

I enjoy most of the “How Do Dinosaurs...” books. They do a great job of giving appropriate and inappropriate reactions or behaviors. I teach a life skills class and my students get mad often and don’t always know how to appropriately express or handle their anger so this book is a good tool for me to use and continue to talk about good and bad choices and behaviors when this emotion is felt. The only thing I hesitate about this book is that it may give some students ideas of more inappropriate behaviors such as ripping books. So I would use your best judgement about the kiddos you plan to share this with!

My review is really for all of the "How Do Dinosaurs" books and not just this one. I first saw these books when I was teaching pre-k. They were a class favorite and the kids wanted to read them over and over. My two year old daughter loves dinosaurs and is obsessed with these books, so we ordered several of them. These are good books with good illustrations.

This was the perfect way to help us dialogue with our son who lives in his dinosaur persona about his emotional state of anger. It gave him some ways to talk about his feelings as if he was one of the dinosaurs in the book. Adorable illustrations with each dinosaur labeled with their name...worth every penny. We came back to buy many more in this series.

My 2 year old really likes this book and it give great examples about what to do and not do when you're feeling "big emotions" like being mad. He loves the pictures and will repeat back some of the lessons "no rip books" is a popular one. Great book for helping kids learn healthy ways to express themselves.

We are a big fan of this dinosaur series by Yolen. She does a great job relating to young kids and using dinosaurs (which are creatures my 3-year-old adores) helps bring the message home with them. Whenever my son is mad I can say, "remember? What does a dinosaur do when mad?" and he can recite ideas from the book.

This wasn't a perfect book (what book is?) but I found I quite solidly enjoyed it. It was just long enough to be satisfying, and thankfully didn't run to 500 pages. (It wouldn't have sustained itself for so long.) The angels and the Gods and the city on chains are interesting conceits, and worked very well as a dark fantasy frame.Some of the plot turns were rather obvious. Others weren't obvious, but I couldn't find much way to make sense of them. But these felt like minor stumbles. If they keep happening in the next book in the Deepgate Codex, I'll probably be much less forgiving. But right now-- so far so good.

It seems the biggest issue with this book is that Dill is not the protagonist.Protagonists DO something in a book. The antagonist lays a "problem" down, and the protagonist fixes the problem. So in the most basic of terms, you need three things in a story: a protagonist, an antagonist, and a problem.And that's the problem.Rachel (the assassin) is the protagonist. She makes stuff happen.Who's the antagonist? Devon. But he's just a pre-protagonist, there's another, larger one, out there. Which is confusing too, since there are ostensible two antagonists in this story, and they have NOTHING to do with each other!!What's the "problem"?A-ha! What is the problem that our protagonist needs to solve?I'm not really sure, and Campbell never really tells you until late, late in the book. And even then, we're not sure what the problem is.I read the entire book, but about halfway through it, I looked around at my room and said, "What's the point? What's the problem they are trying to solve?"And I couldn't come up with one. Campbell was just giving us a "day in the life" account of some folks, but never really telling us what the main problem was.So you have a bunch of characters running around doing stuff, but you don't know why.Here's a tip: Let us know what the problem is early. That way we know the stakes. Oh, and pick a protagonist. I have started reading the 2nd book (Shame on me, right?) and Dill's even less involved in the story so far than he was in book one. So by that, I have to think Rachel is the protagonist.Right?Who's with me!!(Oh and what are the chains attached to? Seriously!)

I purchased the British version of this because I couldn't wait for the US edition (the artwork on the jacket is superior, so glad I did). What a complexity of visions the writer's prose creates-- I was absolutely THERE, seeing that vast metropolis of Deepgate in all its foreboding and creepy realism, chills and thrills, ooo-weee loved it. I get extremely tired of all of the young man turns world do-gooder on some sort of impossible quest yet somehow has this magic crap he knows nothing about that allows him to save the universe blah blah stuff. This was wonderfully different, unique, off-the-wall, you know what I mean. When you're in a good book it sits there by your couch, sortof like a present waiting to be opened again, nothing better than a good bookie, except a freekin GREAT bookie and this is it. You truly must get this one. I would pay the extra though and opt for the British edition, you'll love the cover.

For a first book this was excellent although if I could I might rate it 3.75 stars. I wont get into the plot or a rehash of the story since others have done it so well but I will say that I think Alan Campbell has great potential. Much of the book feels like a mix of other more popular authors but Alan does a great job building up his story and while his story and ending are somewhat predictable if was thoroughly enjoyable. I have already recommended this book to my friends and happily read through his sequel in a day (Iron Angel). I am looking forward to his next book.

Scar Night is the first book by Alan Campbell, and it most certainly shows. While the story works in some areas and shows promise in others, for the most part the world that the plot takes place in is what ruins this book.The concept is an interesting concept. Fallen angels living in a chain city. The promise behind such a premise was enough to make me continue on and read to find out. But this is where the story begins to falter because of where the angels live. Two of them, a young angel and an immensely old angel, live in a city held together by chains above the abyss. This could be good as an intermediary to hell down below. The problem is that the city is held by chains, but it is connected to land. People live in squalor and fear, when all they have to do is walk away from the city and build their own community on land with deserts, trees, seas you name it. So what is the point of having a city suspended above the abyss? It makes no sense at all. Presumably because the city was put there to guard the abyss and as some sort of religious pretext for why their god chose that spot and built that city. But this is hard to get over, especially with an angry tribe marching to destroy the city.Two other parts that ruin the book. A poisoner is somehow privy to exactly how Deepgate's military will fight and knows exactly how and what they will do militarily and politically. The logic behind this is just not there, leaving you with a flimsy reason to further the story. Finally the book culminates with a mad group of decaying angels (which, by the way, did have promise and it would have been much better if we would have seen more of them and what they could have done) flying after the two other angels out of the abyss. Yup, flying to the surface with no restrictions. So what is the point of staying in the abyss with no light, food or anything else except decaying flesh and dead bodies? None apparently, but it helped to facilitate the story so it was added to it.I really can't say that I enjoyed Scar Night, although I won't necessarily go so far as to say it was horrible. It is a decent first book with a ton of room for improvement. I may read the next in the series if only to see if his writing improves and to see if the decaying angels make another appearance. Not a recommend.2.5 stars.

The first Brain Games sticker book I did was horrible (butterflies on the cover). I didn't even bother to purchase the one with animals (cat on the cover) because of poor reviews. I think the author listened to the reviewers for this new edition and made a huge improvement! While not exactly involved and intricate as some others, the stickers so far have fit perfectly in the shapes, which makes for a non-frustrating, happy time! Enjoy!! I will update if I change my opinion, as I haven't finished the book yet.

This sticker book was decent quality for the brand, but it had some flaws. For some reason, it included 2 of the exact same sheets of stickers for the last 2 pictures, and the quality of each picture was inconsistent. The last few pictures especially had some errors, such as a wrong number labeling for the sticker placements, and there were some stickers that did not fit their correct spaces (particularly the picture of the stingrays). Nearly every page also had stickers that were not cut thoroughly enough to remove without them ripping. Overall, it is a decent sticker book, and I like how most of the pictures turned out.

I have bought several different brands of sticker books.. this one is my favorite. The spiral booking gives it an advantage and the pieces dont go micro which I like. I like to relax and do the book and not have to bust out the tweezers - so all depends on the difficulty level you are looking for

Third sticker book of this kind I've bought and they're always fun to do, but I feel the design choices in this one could have been better. I don't usually think of mountains, palm trees, submarines, and tortoises when I think "Under the Sea". It would have been nice to see more variety of sea creatures (maybe an octopus?) instead of just a bunch of fish designs. However I'm sure I will still enjoy doing them.

Stressed and need a way to relax? This is a great option. It takes your mind off whatever it is that's bothering you.

These sticker books are amazing!! Not your typical kids stickers. The numbered stickers are little and go on the corresponding numbered spots on the picture. The colors are beautiful, and older kids (as well as adults) can produce a work of art. The completed pictures could actually be framed, the pictures are on heavy cardstock paper, and the books are thick. I got five of them for each of my older grandchildren, and I am so excited to give them this Christmas. I would even enjoy creating a fun page with the small numbered stickers.

My 4 year old daughter loves this activity book! She is learning to recognize numbers into the 70s and 80s. Stickers often have to be rotated, so she is also learning to match shapes. It's a fun, no-pressure way to learn. She does need help sometimes with the numbers.

Great project for kids. Even my 4 year old grandson can do these by himself once shown how they are done. Great product!
