Ths book was first published in 1951 but remains of interest and importance even today. This is so because of the extremesensitivity with which the author describes Indian middle class living. The author (1897-1999) spent all his early years in undividedBritish India in the relatively small city of Kishorganj in the district of Mymensingh which is now in Bangladesh. He takes this autobilography from childhood to the completion of his college education in Calcutta (now called Kolkata).in 1921.He desribes the incidents of family life with complete honesty with no attempt to condemn or justify. His writing reveals him to be a person of rugged independence. His writing style is not heavy or tedious but the ordinary reader is sometimes baffled by his use of obscure English words and the use of French expressions. The book is recommended to those who have the time and leisure to savour unusual writing. It is not a rapid read book.

One of my favorite books. Muir describes what Scotland was like during first half of 20th century. He was born on one of the Shetland islands and lived with his family there as farmers. When the landlord sold the farm, his family moved to Glasgow on the mainland. One by one his family died in the terrible slums of Glasgow. It is a very heartfelt book, yet is hopeful because Muir himself was a complex, insightful person. He writes beautifully and notices things about nature that go very deep. The death of his family lead to his being psyhoanalized (misspelled) by a Jungian in London. He was then able to deal with a profound depression and come out of it. He wanted to honor his family by writing this book, and also record where he thought humanity was failing.

Did not read it yet ... meant for a review in Aprl 2019One of the preferred books of Winston Churchill. In parallel there are excellent introductions on Chaudhuri on youtube. ONLY WISH this particular book could be available on Audible ... the print is very small, this book is 514 pages and the topic is not plain sailing. Wish it could be read by an Indian gentleman with a low suave voice ... and this before April ‘19!!!

A classic, informative and detailed book - not easy reading. The author is a middle class Indian intellectual, deeply critical of his country and its leadership. In particular he is alienated from Ghandi on a personal and intellectual level, breaking ranks with the overwhelming numbers of the Indian public who revers Ghandi and puts hi almost beyond criticism. The massive amount of detail in this book may be off-putting to some readers, but any sections that seem tedious or irrelevant to the reader may be skipped, Separate the wheat from the chaff and this book is well worth a little effort.

One of the best books by the late Nirad Chaudhuri

One of the best ways to understand the work of Muir is to meet him in this Autobiography. The hardships of his childhood and later life are quickly sketched in; his appreciation of the world as he encountered it in his European travels is sharply delineated, and his generous view of the many thinkers, writers, and teachers he knew gives us a picture not only of them but of Muir himself - a shy but perceptive man, ready to befriend and help. The book gives us, too, an introduction to Willa Muir, Edwin's wife and collaborator; it is refreshing to read of so happy a marriage!

Yes.

Muir writes a robust and effective prose of the kind that disappeared almost completely after the war. He has a lot to say about dreams and emotions.
