Severely outdated, not worth the money.

Good description and explanation of different aspects of prosthetics and orthotics.

I really like this book, it is short but not to short and gives you what you need to know. I think it will be a great reference book when I get into practice.

I like this book as it is a great introduction to the sciences of orthotics & prosthetics (O&P). It is a fairly easy read yet covers most essential elements of O&P devices and applications in rehabilitation. Chapter 2 is a very useful and succinct introduction to biomechanics as it relates to O&P. I use this text as required readings for DPT and PTA classes that I teach and encourage other professors interested in O&P sciences to use it as a reference. I feel that it covers most of the foundational concepts of O&P and it seems to help provide students with the practical knowledge of what they will need in practice.O&P students may find the case study approach of the text useful, but it is not as in-depth as texts like Orthotics and Prosthetics in Rehabilitation, 2e which is an excellent text.Practicing ortho-prosthetists will appreciate the section on "Teaching Prosthetic Control" in chapter 7. This makes a good reference for your PT colleagues.Overall a good book, well illustrated, authors have command of the subject material, and the editors only missed two instances of the dreaded so-called word "componentry". But then...I call it O&P and not P&O.

Ticknor is a very different experience vs. How Should A Person Be--but so brilliant. I like it as much as her other work, which means it gets my highest possible recommendation.

The narrator walks along a Boston street thinking about his friend / rival, who he's going to dinner with. I thought the format of the monologue -- essentially the narrator interviewing himself, switching between "I" and "you" and changing his "I" story in the face of unsympathetic and well-informed questions from the "you" questioner -- had potential, but nothing about the actual content grabbed my interest. I gave up after 33 pages. At least it only cost me 1c...

George Ticknor, the narrator of Sheils Heti's super new novel, has a problem with his more successful chum, a boyhood pal called William Prescott who has grown into a one-man writing factory, while he, George, has remained a low level journalist and a fulltime milksop, just seething with secret resentments. The relationship between them is not unlike the one Nabokov sketched out in PALE FIRE between John Shade, the Olympian, above it all poet, and his neighbor Charles Kinbote, who comes to believe that the poem Shade spends his last days writing is "secretly" an allegory for Kinbote's own hidden past in Zembla.Heti's novel has its Zemblan aspects, a fleecy, neurosis-ridden prose style used to expose Ticknor's pretensions. That's not to say he isn't sometimes genuinely lyrical. Prescott shares his name and profession with the real-life famous US historian of the American Renaissance period, while George Ticknor was the publisher of Hawthorne, Lowell, many in the same era. Sheila Heti has scrambled pieces of their identities to provide us with an increasingly modern story of guilt and forgiveness, for in her version, something happened way back when in the boyhood of the two main characters, something dark and nasty that resulted in Prescott's losing an eye, like the accident Robert Creeley suffered as a youth, but here there's a definite BAD SEED feeling to it.Sheila Heti's not so good when describing George's lustful feelings for a woman who probably doesn't even know he's alive. Funny lapse in a writer otherwise so gifted. I just didn't buy that he was attracted to her. It seemed like Heti was trying a) either to humanize her boy or b) to make him more sociopathic and creepy or c) a mixture of both but I doubt any man has ever felt that way about any woman outside of a book so it just felt clunky.

How can one write porn fiction without being uber-offensive? (Apologies to the ride-sharing App). In this short story, Miller writes something that is clever, amusing, and informative. Readers will find perspectives on how each layer of financial management is seen by potential clients who also may have unattractive titles such as suckers, marks, and chumps. One reason this short story is longer than others is that about 87% of it is written as a screenplay complete with directions characters must follow. At that point, Heidi’s husband comes home, and she explains to Paul what she is doing and what problems she is having completing the play. Her final character is Private Equity Guy and she doesn’t like where the story is going. Readers should note Paul’s occupation.Heidi writes about Paige, a 23-year-old who meets a Trader, described as the most primitive of men in the financial hierarchy. He has sexual appetites that mirror his primitive tendencies. She goes on to meet the Investment Banker, the Private Wealth Manager, the Hedge Fund Manager, the Stock Analyst, the Quant, the Real Estate Developer, the Venture Capitalist, and finally the Private Equity Guy. Paige meets all these men over a long period of time. By the time she gets to Private Equity Guy she is in her early thirties (probably the same age as author Heidi). Each of these tropes has its own unique form of sexual behavior. I had no idea what a Quant was in the field of finance.Given the topic, it is amazing that this story is written with minimal sexual language. I would say that is quite a trick, but the Pun Police would fine me. This five-star Amazon read is informative and entertaining. There is even a moral lesson that readers may discover at the end. Starting with porn and ending with morality deserves five stars.

I honestly had no idea wtf was going on until I re-read they synopsis. And I didnt even fully understand the what was happening til Heidi's husband comes in the picture and then basically trashes what shes trying to say.Not trashes in a bad way but just shows her the good side of the bad shes trying to show in a sweet honest way. Probably the worst of the series.Maybe not worst hut definitely my leaaaaasssttt liked.

Most of this sort story is taken up with script of a porno set in the world of finance that's every bit as odd as the premise sounds. This style failed to connect with me on any level

This short story in the "Fairer Sex" collection is a story within a story. Heidi is using her finance knowledge to try and write a porn script. Each character acts like his job title. Descriptions are funny when you think about finance job descriptions and characters having those descriptions meet their personalities.

This is such a fun collection of short stories. I didn’t love the style of this one (it’s a movie script) but it’s a fun addition to the series overall.

Best one of The Fairer Sex Collection yet. If you are into Economics and finance you will get a kick out of this one.

Make sure that all the connections are tight and flush. Squaring Walls Align the bottom plate so that when it is raised, it will be as close to the final position as possible. Attach the bottom plate to the floor along the inside chalk line for the wall. Toenail through the bottom plate into the floor so that the sheathing won’t cover the nails. If the wall is in position, it can be nailed on the inside, and the nails can be pulled out after the wall is raised. Use your tape measure to check the diagonal lengths of the wall. Move the top part of the wall until the diagonal lengths are equal. Example: If the diagonal measurements are different by one inch, then move the long measure toward the short measure by one half inch diagonal measure. Make sure the measurements are exact. Once the diagonals are the same, check by measuring the other diagonal. Temporarily nail the top of the wall so that it will not move while you are sheathing it. Make sure you nail so that your nails won’t be covered by the sheathing.

This is a pretty good book, but lacks simple details. The author assumes you are already a framer, or at least that you have a good bit of knowledge on the craft. For instance, there isn't any instruction on fabricating the corners for walls properly. This would be necessary in order to be able to hang the drywall. He tells you how to lay out the tool storage in a framing van. Really? People can't figure that out on their own? He talks about "crowning" studs. but stops there. Nowhere does he mention how to do this. If you are handy with tools but need to know how to frame up a simple structure, I'd get the Ortho book instead. It's more geared toward the non-professional, once-in-a-while framer like me.

While this is a solid book, I would not call it a "complete" book of framing. It basically covers the principles of building a new house from the perspective of someone working on or leading a professional construction team. For the average person who is perhaps looking to do a remodel or some retrofit work, this book doesn't cover many scenarios. There is some very specific stuff like how to pack up your truck and organize a construction site which will be of use to only a limited audience, but nothing, for example, on framing an interior wall in an existing structure. I thought it would cover more scenarios so as a result was a bit disappointed.

I do not believe This is the book for a DIY-er or even someone just beginning to learn the trade. In essence, the author does a fine job of laying out all the "whats" of framing but rarely talks about the "whys" of framing. The trouble for me begins on the first couple of pages -- there's maybe half a page given to explaining a load-bearing wall, mostly just a diagram, a couple of sentences to go along with it "and that's it. I still have no idea how I would identify a load bearing wall and be able to explain WHY it's a load-bearing wall. It gets better ... later in the first chapter there's two pages full of pictures of common framer's tools, but absolutely no discussion on what to look for when selecting your own tools. Do we really need a picture of a measuring tape? Or an extension cord? If the picture of a tool belt had not been included, I'd be framing right now wearing a purple fanny-pack.There's also a section on deciphering lumber panels on page 12 of the second edition. All the author does here is label each part of the lumber panel and move on to the next topic. For example, it would have been nice to have a discussion on the the moisture content (S-GRN, S-DRY, MC-15) as it relates to new construction or remodeling work, when to use which moisture content, etc. But I guess I'm supposed to already know this.I gave it three stars because my viewpoint is only one valid viewpoint; others, probably seasoned framers, may actually find the content in this book helpful. As for the DIY-er who wants to learn the whys and be able to reason about framing construction, this book falls dreadfully short.If only Rex Cauldwell, the author of "Wiring a House" were a framer and had written this book ... this book is better off as a encyclopedia for framing contractors, as it contains 100+ pages on how to run a framing crew.I'll update my review with a suitable recommendation for a beginner DIY framing book once I have found one.

Great book, very knowledgeable. I needed to sharpen up on my framing and code standards, this was perfect. If I was reading this from a completely new to carpentry perspective, I think I could easily grasp the concept and put it into action from this book.

This is a guide on how to frame, nothing on how to design a framing project. Literally how to cut, plumb, and nail wood. The content could easily be reduced to a small, 50 page pamphlet, instead it has giant margins, giant pictures, unnecessary fluff, and huge blank spaces at the ends of chapters. Useless to anyone but a novice framer with a full set of blueprints, don't pay more than 3-5$.

Another really good book for beginners on framing. It helps them SEE all the parts and shows very helpful diagrams and explanations. It may seem too "oversimplified" for the master-carpenter, who has been framing for 30 years, but I think this is a great book for someone with no experience. Also good to get to help teach apprentice carpenters.

I am building a shed and while I am self-taught in basic framing techniques, I decided to further educate myself on the subject to avoid any costly mistakes. When I first started reading this book, it occurred to me that I was learning pretty much nothing new. Most chapters seemed written by Captain Obvious (like "put one board on the top of another, hold the nail to the top board, pound with the hammer until the nail sinks; now your boards are fastened"---this is an exaggeration, but really, a lot of stuff reads like this). This awesome, many great, iconic photos. I heard an interview (Terry Gross, Fresh Air, maybe?) with the person who put this together and he talked quite a lot about many of the images and of the photographers as well. The AP photographers who made these. photographs rarely of ever saw their work, they shot the film and sent it away to the editors and papers they worked for, and those people developed the film and chose which. images would be. published. These are all really interesting and to think that many were shot in haste under extreme circumstances, in battle or whatever.

You can't love a book like this, but you can appreciate the courage, the collection effort, how divisive the war was, and how brave the men were for each other(most of the time). Having been a part of the war, I still find it difficult to go through the book--takes time.

With an emerging interest in the Vietnam War I found this book was exactly what I needed. Some of the greatest photographs of the war, capturing the emotion and day to day action of it all.If you're intrigued by this, just buy it. I hadn't seen many of the pictures before and the brief descriptions and chapter notes help to ground the images in the history of the war.

Superb photo documentation of Vietnam, with just enough captioning to give context. You won't find all the great or memorable Vietnam pictures here - this is an Associated Press book, but it's full of superb shots by some of the great photo journalists who worked in Southeast Asia. If Vietnam is part of your memory, I highly recommend this book. You won't just read it once and forget it. The book is more than just random photos. There is a story thread woven through it, based on correspondence from the AP Saigon bureau. In retrospect, it makes the whole Vietnam adventure seem stupid, but of course ALL hindsight is 20/20.

Vietnam was unique for reporters & photo journalists compared to recent conflicts in that they could hitch a ride & go where ever they wanted without being embedded as they are required to do now. This resulted in some "tell it like it is" on the ground reporting. These are some of the Associated Press most memorable shots of the war from the early 1960's thru the mid-70s. They are very often heartbreaking but honest. This is not a coffee-table book, but it is a photographic history of the real war in Vietnam from the ground up. It includes a 15 page introduction by journalist Pete Hamill & all pictured are captioned.

I have seen many of these photos before. Seeing them again helps me to recall the pain, anguish and horror that so many people of my age had to endure. My own time in the Army, 1963-64, never required me to be in Vietnam and I consider myself very lucky for that. As I talk with other veterans who were not so fortunate my heart goes out to them. I wish our country had done a better job of recognizing their sacrifice so many years ago.

The Associated Press sent its first reporters to Vietnam soon after the French military returned to the country in 1945. During the next thirty years what started out as a distant colonial war grew into the principle military struggle of the Cold War. The whole time, the Associated Press was on the ground writing stories and taking photos. To do this, the AP hired and cultivated the best photojournalists of the era."Vietnam: The Real War" is a photographic history of the conflict. Most of the photos come from AP's archive but when necessary the editors have included photos from non-AP sources. The text lightly covers the history of the war. Its real strength is telling the stories of the AP photographers and journalists. These are the stories of the intrepid journalists who brought the war to the world's newspapers and magazines.The "Golden Age" of photographic journalism is often seen as having taken place during the Spanish Civil War and Second World War. A whole cottage industry has arisen to chronicle the works of the great Magnum photographers, Robert Capa, David Seymour and George Rodgers. The photographic history of the Korean and Vietnam wars have never generated the same interest among historians and authors. Perhaps this is because of our nation's more troubled relationship with these conflicts. Neither the Korean nor the Vietnam War were ever considered "Good Wars" fought by a "Greatest Generation."It is unfortunate that the great photojournalists of the Vietnam War never received the recognition they were due. "Vietnam: The Read War" is a collection of extraordinary photographs that move way beyond merely documenting the horrors of war. There are beautifully composed images that leave the world of illustration and enter the realm of fine art. Those images say as much about the insanity of war as any work by Goya. This is a great book that will be enjoyed by people interested in both history and photography. Highly recommended!

This book is really a copy cat of "The Eyewitness History of the Vietnam War" put together by George Esper and The Associated Press published in 1983 in soft cover. There are very few different photographs in this new book. The 1983 version has more text about our troops, it's not just pics.I was irritated with one pic. On pg 250 the caption refers to soldiers giving a "V" sign, those soldiers are giving the peace sign. The soldier with both fists in the air is a black soldier and he is giving the black power sign. With that off my chest I would highly recommend this hard cover book. Brought back some "fond" memories.

Interesting premise, the whole family enjoyed reading it. My 11 year old is enamored with mythology and loved this book. The stand-out feature is the art. Mr. Muller is an artistic genius! I'm considering purchasing a second copy so I can frame the prints.

I was not expecting a book written for young adults. I found some interesting information, just not what I wanted.

I remember back in 2007 when the American Museum of Natural History in NYC premiered a show called “Mythic Creatures”. It made a fair amount of press and with good reason. It’s not every day you see full-scale models of mythical creatures presented in a serious museum setting. The show got some nice write-ups but though I listened to the explanations of why it was going on, I didn’t quite catch the whole point. To me it just sort of sounded like a cheap ploy to lure more patrons into the museum’s exhibits. A bit of the old P.T Barnum, albeit with a classier imprimatur. Years passed and I forgot about the show right up until the publication of The Griffin and the Dinosaur. As I read the book, memories of the show came back to me, as did my complete and utter misunderstanding of what it had been trying to accomplish. Fortunately, I am happy to report that once in a while in this life a gal gets a second chance. With Marc Aronson and Adrienne Mayor’s hard work, now I have a book before me that clarifies the true connection between the prehistoric and the mythical. Focused through a single woman’s obsessive search, this book comes off as both a riveting historical mystery as well as a wonderful example of how a person’s passions might take them places they never imagined they might travel. The future isn’t written in stone but it might just be written in bones.It was kind of a goofy idea. The sort of thing a person might consider off-handedly then forget about five minutes later. But for Adrienne Mayor, the idea stuck. It was simple too. You see, after doing lots of research at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Ms. Mayor noticed a strange pattern. Reading texts by ancient Greeks she noticed that when they discussed creatures like griffins they always sounded like they knew about these animals firsthand. Is it possible that these creatures were conjured up after the Greeks found some ancient bones of one kind of another? Not a natural born scholar, Adrienne always considered herself more of an artist than anything else. Still, this question about the griffin’s origins intrigued her. What she could not have expected was how her search would take her from Greece to Samos to The Museum of the Rockies to distant China. Infinitely interesting, illustrated with multiple photographs, sketches, ancient images and contemporary illustrations, Mayor not only shows where our ancestors got their seemingly goofy ideas, but gives these people a form of credit and respect that is certainly their due.Every Marc Aronson book is different. Generalizing is not something you can really do when you discuss him as an author. I have found in the past that some of his books ran a bit on the long and lengthy side, but beyond that there aren’t any real connecting threads between one project and another. Yet if I found Mr. Aronson to be a bit more loquacious at times than he needed to be, no such objection could possibly be leveled at The Griffin and the Dinosaur. Coming in at a svelte 48 pages, a number normally associated with slightly longer picture books, Aronson wastes no time getting to the meat of the matter. Turn to the first page and there’s Adrienne, age six. Four pages later she’s studying in Athens while her fiancé works on his ancient Greek fortress research. Aronson cuts to the chase, helped in large part by his interviews with Adrienne. The result is a well-rounded portrait of a single woman going against the odds to prove something both interesting and odd. It’s research presented to kids as adventure in a format they’re going to actually WANT to read. How rare is that?I know that one reviewer of this book was dismayed by an interpretation of Marc Aronson’s message here that says that people who closely observe the world around them are just as good as professional scholars in the field. For the record, I do not happen to agree that that is what Aronson is saying. I think it far more likely that Aronson is displaying the need for balance. You can sit behind dusty tomes all day long with your professional degree hanging up upon a wall, but if you don’t go out and try new ideas and speak to new people and even do a bit of exploring (of one kind or another) then you cannot be surprised when a woman like Ms. Mayor goes about making a fabulous, hitherto unknown (or unproved) discovery. By the same token, the person who observes the world around them closely but never picks up a book or does even rudimentary research is going to completely miss the potential connections out there that could justify their work. Mayor exhibited both a willingness to learn and a sharp-eyed curiosity that was willing to question. In an era when so much research is beholden to outside interests, it does the heart good to read a book about a woman who set out to discover what many might have considered impossible to prove.The extra details turn out to be just as enchanting. The entire history of the Scythians and how they might have been an inspiration for some of the Amazon women tales out there is captivating. Even more so their gold, as well as the discovery of Megalopolis. And then there’s that amazing look at mammoth skulls and how they might have inspired the stories of the Cyclops. It all got me to thinking about the role of myths in the world and their beginnings. Maybe a kid will read this book and begin to wonder what the roots of other great myths might be. Will they start poring over Hindi and Norse myths, looking for clues to the past? Or will they simply get a better sense of one of the big themes of the book: that ancient people had reasons for making up the stories that they did. For me, that was a moral well worth taking away from the story. We have a tendency to look down our nose at our ancient ancestors, but as this book shows, these people had their reasons for thinking the way that they did. We should never be so egotistical as to believe that we are the first people to find the bones of long extinct creatures and to make up reasons for their existence.As for the art, for the most part it’s okay but artist Chris Muller gets off to a shaky start. His presence in the book makes a lot of sense. I could completely understand the need to ratchet up the kid-friendly elements of the story, of course. If you name your book The Griffin and the Dinosaur then you better bloody well have a couple griffins in there (to say nothing of the dinosaurs). In fact, when Muller is working on the mythical, he is at his best. The cover, for example, is striking, as are his images of an Amazon fighting a griffin or a sleeping griffin protecting its nest. Where it all breaks down is when he has to deal with reality. The publication page says that the paintings were made with “traditional media – pencil and watercolors – and digital painting.” Traditional media is fine with me, but the digital painting proves to be occasionally painful. For example, a preliminary image of young Adrienne dowsing above the skeleton of a dinosaur is baffling partly because I couldn’t find any mentions of dowsing in the text and partly because the CGI cloud cover contrasts horribly with the drawn Adrienne. It feels like a cheap image in an otherwise classy book. Happily, it is the only moment when I felt that way. Other images in the book border or plunge right into the fantastical, and that’s appropriate for the moments they tend to illustrate.This is the Possession by A.S. Byatt of children’s literature. An honest-to-goodness historical mystery complete with an early hypothesis, a likable heroine, multiple dead ends, and at the end? GOLD! Literally. It succeeds at doing many things at once, but never runs too long or bores the reader with its findings. Mayor is a likable and ultimately unintimidating subject for kids to follow. For those children obsessed with myths and legends, this might be the ideal way to transition them gently from the world of the fantastical into one of research and exploration. I, for one, want to read all the books in this genre published by National Geographic Kids.I received this book in exchange for an honest review. The review and rating are based on my own perception.

we listened to this book on CD as a family... twice... on a road trip this summer. it was captivating and interesting to all of us from age 8 to 53. hopefully there are other similar titles in this kind of series. my kids want to go up to stanford and meet the author and interview her about dragons and fossils.
