Its opening section including nine concise chapters on future visions that misread both World Wars. Norman Angell's Great Illusion accurately noted that there was no rational reason to go to war given its immense costs, but as Freedman shows, wars are not always a rational response to political pressures. Freedman's inclusion of H.G. Wells and George Orwell added insights that I'd not seen in my own research. Readers who hope that Stephen Pinker's Better Angels of our Nature represents an accurate projection of a peaceful future, will want to see the author's detailed review of the various intellectual flaws and suspect casualty statistics that undergird that optimism.I think this can be a great course book for a two semester course on Past Thinking of Future Wars, and Contemporary Issues in Warfare. (The bibliography alone is worth the price of the book). The closing sections on climate change, mega-cities, water wars, hybrid conflicts, and information warfare are valuable summaries that can be supplemented with deep dive articles. Dr. Freedman's critique of water wars was compelling, and think his skepticism could be carried over to urbanization as well. My only complaint is the emphasis on Anglo-American insights, and hope that Professor Freedman can extend this work into Russia, Chinese and Middle East perspectives on war and warfare.

Lawrence Friedman is one of my favorite authors on this topic. The title makes it seem that this is about the future of work it is not. This book is a compilation and overview of the historical approach to writing about the future of War. Amazing in its own right but don't read it because you want to read about robots fighting over lunar landscapes. This is about how people have speculated about the future of modern conflict from the Battle of Darby going forward. Tremendous work I recommend everything mr. Friedman writes

Well-written, thoughtful analysis. Helps the reader understand the fallacies of believing in short wars and needless overseas conflict. The only drawback was that part three seemed to cover much of what part two had talked about. Draws in some of the best strategy and history ever written.

Absolutely brilliant. A profound reflection on the never ending quest for peace and the unchanging human propensity for violence rendered in a straightforward style. The immense background of literature - specialized or not - provides an ample and solid foundation for the penetrating interpretations offered by the author.

This is a great survey of the field—particularly the history of IR in the 20th century. Each chapter provides context for the narrative, while also standing on its own. Worth the bibliography alone. Best Book of 2017!

After a promising start debunking Stephen Pinker's fatuous Better Angels book, this treatise devolves into a series of dry rehashes of various conflicts ancient and modern, interspersed with detailed explorations of questions of no interest to anyone outside academia - such as how many people really died in WWII, was it 40 million or maybe 50 million? With virtually no new insights or analysis, and burdened by a deadly dull writing style, reading this book felt a lot like the old joke with the punch line "there must be a pony in here somewhere" - except there isn't.

Bellevue Hospital is the flagship hospital of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation covering at least 11 major medical centers in the NYC metropolitan area. I had the privilege of working for Dr. Manheimer as Director of Obstetrics at Bellevue Hospital. Reading this book took me back to some of the most exciting, stimulating and challenging years of my career. It was an amazing experience working under Dr. Manheimer's tutelage as our Medical Director. His open door policy, genuine concern for his physicians and mostly his patients is palpable in this book. Eric (as he preferred us to call him) has medicine in his genes---his father practiced internal medicine, even making house calls into his late 80s. Eric often accompanied him on house calls as a child. As you will in this book, this is where he became "imprinted" with the "art of medicine." It is really uplifting to see a Medical Director of a huge system operate with true "esprit de corps" taking care of his patients and his faculty. You will get to discover and appreciate the complete transcection of society (national and international) that receives health care at Bellevue Hospital. You will see the inside mechanics of the oldest hospital in the US and one of the largest teaching hospitals today.I bought this book and took it on a weekend get-away with my family----what a mistake!!!!!! I had to fight my family off from taking this book from me----they too were wholly engrossed in the contents having "lived" Bellevue through me during my tenure there. I have always enjoyed non fiction books about medicine. While well written, I didn't enjoy this much. I guess the main problem was the patients the doctor selected to write about. I didn't find them very interesting and there was no continuity as the book progressed. I was fine for about the first 15% and after that just wanted it to end. I should have simply laid it aside, but instead struggled through it. I applaud the doctors outstanding career and appreciate all the good he accomplished, I'm sorry I didn't care much for the book.

Through its vast doors come the immigrant and minority people who, for hundreds of years, have gathered in New York City for its challenging environment of work, wealth, and freedom, as well as providing a home for all who come. Riker's Island, the largest prison complex in the country provides a vast prison facility for those who comit crimes or are waiting trial for offenses ranging from simple drug arrests to the most horrendous of violent acts. The serial killer known as Son of Sam was imprisoned there for several years awaiting trial. The relationship between these two institutions and the communities surrounding them provides the context for this enormously engaging and challenging exploration of the American health care system at the nexus where it is most challenged. Using twelve patients, including himself, as examples, Manheimer explores the nooks and crannies of an over-challenged system to provide care for those most in need.In what amounts to a series of harrowing and inspiring case studies, he portrays the capacity of this system to meet the physical and emotional needs of those most in need of its powers. I never wanted this book to end. I am giving it to my primary care practitioners. He offers such insight into the roles that context plays in healthcare outcomes, where do we come from? how did we get here? what difference does it make? I know that doctors and practitioners are very busy these days and may not be particularly well paid. But these accounts of deep listening even when provoked are inspirational. This doctor connects his own lived experiences with his patients and his readers to build "swift trust" (or even slow trust). I think we could all benefit if we felt heard and in turn invested in truly listening to each other.

the case studies were very interesting. the author writes from a personal, caring viewpoint. I would want him as my doctor or have my family members cared for by this doctor. he demonstrates a caring and understanding of all people no matter what their station in life.

This is an excellent fairy tale romance for all ages! It's the first story of two young people who know they are meant for each other and the adversity they must overcome. The author has a way of making you feel part of the world in which the characters live; I fell in love with them and look forward their continuing story as they change the world around them!

I absolutely LOVED this teaser/intro book into this series. The author, Tracey Deming, snags your attention in the first paragraph and doesn't let go until the last word.The characters are believable, the setting is nothing short of magical and the ever so subtly emerging plot leaves you in anticipation of what is coming next.My only criticism? This first book ended WAY too soon!If you're looking for a quick escape into a wonderous world of magic, danger and romance, then pick up your copy of Ravenfire today! Oh, and Mrs. Deming? Please get the next volume out soon.

A pair of magical youngsters rise to power together in an enchanting tale that is rich in detail ... and wisdom. The writing is unerringly flawless, creating a sense of wonder that only the young possess. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I truly enjoyed this book and the characters as they were introduced. It was written in a very clever way and the story was well thought out. I did feel like the journey through the two main characters' lives seemed a little rushed - like much was cut out to fit into a certain allowance of pages/time. I could be very wrong but the way the time progressed so quickly made it feel that way. Either way I still loved what i read.

I enjoyed this story. It was easy to read and get involved in this new world. Innocence and forbidden young love meet in a magical new world called Realm of Meard. Recommended for people that like stories like Twilight or Hunger Games.

One of the best books I have read in recent memory.

This book is lovely new take on fairy tales, well written, believable caracictures, makes you look forward to the next installment of this story

I live in Bolivia and I use the Lonely Planet as a guide but this edition is a disaster. Whoever wrote the update for Cochabamba obviously didn't step foot in the city. Still showing restaurants that have been closed for years and new modern restaurants which have been open for years not mentioned is a disgrace to the name Lonely Planet. This edition says there is a U.S. consulate in Cochabamba. It has been closed for over three years. Big write up about prostitution is legal in Bolivia is just a beacon for perverts and sex traffickers around the world. Lonely Planet, fire your reviewers and get your act together!

Not liking the new Lonely Planet after the re-design/structure. It's so hard to find the information I need quickly and I couldn't find it that easily. It used to be much easier to find information like public transportation/estimated time between towns, estimated cost, etc. LP need to highlight those information more clearly, and use better organization of information rather than mashing the information all together in the paragraphs and hoping the reader to do a homework and highlight the essential info before they hit the road. I think LP wants to appeal more to travelers with mid to higher range budget. My travel budget tends to be mid range and I dislike the new change. If I'm spending my money on mid and higher range hotels and restaurants, I rather look at reviews on Trip Adviser than relying on LP writer's subjective opinion.What all travers need is the more detailed information on transportation, direction to touristic attraction, estimated travel times, costs and all that. After using the Bolivia, Peru and Cuba LP books after the re-design, I'm convinced to use travel books from different company. In my recent trip to Bolivia/Peru there are so many times I chose to hop on taxi than asking around and figuring out the direction/public transportation to places on my own, because either there is no such info on LP or I didn't have time to read the whole chapter to find the right info. I miss old versions!

I have been using Lonely Planet travel guides for twenty-five years and despite the convenience of the internet for hotel and restaurant recommendations, it is still helpful to have one small book with maps and information. I especially like the Dangers & Annoyances section because it helps me know when it is safe to visit certain places.

I used one of these some years back when I went to Bolivia, so I bought the latest edition for my nephew, who will be doing a college-Term there in January. I expect he will find it as helpful as I did.

Very informative.

As expected

It is a good read and Bolivia sounds like a wonder. As I learned there is preparation to enter. A visa for 10 years a little odd and that it is for only 30 days any given year. And with that I really want to visit for a couple weeks. I'm sure it is special there.
