A Darker Shade of Magic, of course! I was drawn to this book because 1) it's been super popular among the Instagram reader community, and 2) there is not one, but four Londons (mega points for creativity, Schwab).What did I like about this book? Well, the whole premise was highly original. Kell, the main character, can travel between 4 Londons—White London, Red London, Black London, and Grey London. Each London has a different relationship with magic, whether they embrace it, worship it, kill for it, or don't believe in it (not in that order). But Kell and one other character are the only ones able to travel between the Londons, which means they are messengers and ambassadors for the leaders (which leads to some interesting problems).I also liked that the book wasn't all about romance—there was very little. Lila and Kell worked as a team. The book also dealt with brotherly relationships and caring for family, even if they are not your blood relatives. It also tackled the age-old question of "what do you do if you come into a lot of power, but it's an evil power," which naturally includes character motive investigation, willpower, and self discovery.However, as with many hyped books, this one fell a little short of my expectations (hence, 3.5 stars). What went wrong? Let me share:1) Dialogue – I didn't feel like it flowed naturally and was a tad cliche.2) The Strong/Independent Female Main Character Trope – Lila Bard is a cool character, but I'm just a little tired of the whole tough girl characters who don't need a man or anyone else and don't embrace their uniquely feminine strengths. Why does a girl have to act like a man to get attention in the literary community? Why can't she be feminine and strong? *steps off soapbox*3) Character/plot originality – Although the premise was unique, much of it felt like other YA lit fantasy that I had read before and that was better executed (e.g., Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows and the Grisha trilogy).4) World building – I wanted more details. I can never have too much solid world building, and I think it's essential for fantasy to connect with the reader.Overall, a fun read, but not quite a 4-star rating.

This book had so much potential. There's a lot to like but it just didn't quite deliver.PROS- V.E. Schwab has a really nice writing style. It flows effortlessly and you can fly through the pages. Her descriptions paint a solid picture.- The world building is well done. I liked the different Londons and their back stories were interesting. There were plenty of scenes I enjoyed quite a bit.- The Blood Magic/Elemental powers are cool.CONS- The 2 main characters Kell & Lila are both very clichè and uninteresting. Lila was actually very annoying most of the time. She was being very immature at times despite the situation being very serious. She's made out to be a strong female character, which I like, but she always needs to be saved by Kell. Kell complains a lot for no reason. He's also not always honest when he should be.- The Pacing was a little too slow for me at times. There weren't enough epic moments or tense situations to keep me very interested. Once I got more than half way through, I wanted it to just end.- I felt like the Author was very close to blowing me away but she never really did. I don't want to continue the series.I read Six of Crows right before this and that impressed me in every way that this book didn't.

It wasn't bad. I listed to the audio book and found the narrator, Steven Crossley, trying too hard to be Jim Dale and not being successful. The voices he did were kind of annoying, and he overacted sometimes. Lila was already an annoying character, as someone else mentioned in their review, and the voice he did made her even more so. As for the story itself, it's good. Nothing spectacular. It took a while for me to get into it. It was nothing that I haven't read yet. 'His Dark Materials' or the 'City and the City' have done this concept first and are much more engaging. Maybe if I was still a teenager, when I discovered the wonderful world of fantasy, I would have been more engaged, but I have read so many other works similar to this, that I think I will recommend other books before I read this one. The writing is good, the world building is complete, and the story is told well, it's just not really original and Lila is an annoying character. And if you do choose to read this, READ it, don't listen to the audio book!

On the one hand I feel like a primal scream of outrage and want to give this ZERO stars because it just never should have existed at all.On the other hand, it is such a fine example of resilience, of finding a way to make things work in an impossible world, that I want to give it TEN stars.Let's compromise at FIVE stars.It's rare to include photos with a book review. I want to make two points with these pics.1. The Table of Contents shows just how slim this book really is. A mere 48 pages cover the information available for 48 states. That is not actually one page per state. Sometimes it covers two and a half states on a single page. New York City gets more ink than anywhere else.2. There is a nice article in the middle of this slim volume that describes a trip by Greyhound bus. The second photo shows the first two pages of this article. Each reader may have a different impression or take-away so I leave it to you to read it yourself.In the 1940 described by this Green Book, the Great Depression had waned enough so people might travel because they needed to or wanted to travel. World War II had not yet absorbed the country. Jim Crow was a solid reality, and more widespread than I realized years ago.For perspective, what could the Negro Motorist could look forward to in Washington, DC? 7 hotels (including YWCA and YMCA), 4 "tourist homes," 3 taverns, 2 restaurants, 3 beauty shops (but zero barbers listed), 1 garage and 2 service stations, 2 taxicab companies, 1 country club, and 2 night clubs. Other than NYC that may be the longest listing for a single city in the book. All that information occupies less than half of one page.There are not many country clubs listed in the 1940 Green Book. I looked up the one listed for DC. I got exactly zero hits on every internet search for a country club named Grossland's. There's a message there about invisibility.I'm glad I've seen this Green Book, and at the same mighty sorry I ever saw it. It's the kind of incontrovertible piece of history that shows just how deep the white mythos of the era really was. Movies were all white. TV in the 50s was nearly all white. History textbooks of the 30s, 40s, and 50s were basically all white.Perhaps this review will in some way be helpful in bringing some attention to this little piece of history.

Those who don't learn our sometimes shameful history are doomed to repeat it, at least in rhyme.One of the best, and saddest, purchases I've ever made.Born in 1955 in the border state of Kentucky, I saw vestiges of this even in my day as a white kid in a small industrial town. My text books had a School System stamp in them, encouraging the user to take care of the property entrusted to them. Why did they also have a CHECK ONE block with ( ) White and ( ) Colored? In 1961?Still, in 2018, are we repeating all this? Sadly, most would say we are. Some would say that's a good thing. Oh, the disgust...can't we all just see each other for what we are, not what color we are?

As our country gradually devolves back to a darker time, such a pamphlet was necessary for black citizens to use as a guide to travel safely on our nation’s highways. It’s now 2018 , and such a book seems relavent again. Read this book and get a perspective to a time when our grandparents actually had to use a manuel like this just to make it to their chosen destination alive. So sad, but true.

Very grateful that this copy of such an important historical reference book has been made available. Good luck finding and affording an original green book. This copy version allows the reader to journey to a time where safe spaces for people of color had to be compiled to avoid dangerous exchanges. It is amazing to see cities with pages of safe locations that registered with the green book and contrastly towns with maybe one gas station. An important piece of history.

A welcome reprint of an important little book. Not exactly the type of book that you "read," but an interesting reference to show what it was like for black Americans in the first half of the 19th century. It's interesting and tragic to see how few businesses welcomed blacks, and how few large or major businesses are among the nationwide listings.

Yes, it is proof of how things were and are. It also shows why we do things to this day like pack food for a trip, even thought things are so convenient today. The book was in great condition.

Imagine needing a travel book to find businesses and homes that will sell to you or give you a meal or a bed for the night. I was shocked to see that my home city in Michigan had not a single listing. This piece of history really shows you how bad things were.

An important part of the cultural history of our nation for Blacks and non-Blacks. The need for this book was real, folks, and to guide the future, we need to understand the past.

I bought this after hearing about it while watching PBS. I know this is a reproduction, but given the current political climate, it may be time to do a new one

A courageous, sad debut memoir on being a caregiver to a terminally ill family member.After 41 years of marriage, George and Carol Shannon's time together became increasingly marked by silence. Their three sons had left home, and the couple had taken to living ostensibly separate lives, with George spending time at the driving range working on his golf swing and Carol consumed by her books. This "extended stale phase," as George calls it, ended abruptly during a trip to Cabo with family. Carol had been subject to "mini-strokes" in the past, but on this occasion, the stroke severely affected the movement of much of her body and speech. Faced with an uncertain future, George, a cancer survivor, provided the majority of Carol's care following her discharge from the hospital. The memoir is written from the first-person perspective of George and is co-authored by George's middle son, Chad Shannon, who would often stand in for his father as caregiver. The authors reveal the continual tension and sometimes-frantic rush associated with caring for a sick loved one: "I knew [Chad] could be at the hospital within minutes....I flew for the giant entrance to the unit...this unit was the hospital's crisis center. The people they brought here faced death." The mix of terror and hope is palpable on such occasions. They also find humor and positivity in difficulty, describing how the stroke revealed elements of the "true Carol," transforming her from a "once-unassuming woman" to "a minor celebrity" at her rehab facility who dropped a "dozen F-bombs as she performed a therapy drill." George shares his emotions candidly throughout. At the time of Carol's stroke, he says: "I told myself that if Carol survived this, then I would devote my life to making hers better." Chad Patrick Shannon is a freelance writer, story consultant, and attorney. This is a wonderfully moving story that is at times funny, reflective, and heartbreaking, yet it always feels gut-wrenchingly honest. While the story is the very personal journey of George Shannon, the themes of redemption, dedication, and trying to make up for lost time are universal and I found myself feeling like I was along for the ride with him throughout the journey. While this book is extremely relevant for caregivers, I would recommend it to anyone that is trying to build a successful and lasting relationship.

Sad but true

When his wife of 41 years had a debilitating stroke, George Shannon's life took a turn into a period of both intensive caregiving and deep reflection on his own life and values. With The Best Seven Years of My Life (2018, George B. Shannon) we read of what the journey did for him as well as did to him.Co-written with his son, Chad, Shannon delves into the world of caregiving, a world this reviewer understands and has experienced with his mother for nearly six years, and into a period of deep reflection about who he had become over the years in relation to his wife. But men who are caregivers, especially husbands, need to read this book. It is well told, honestly told, deeply told. It is a book which this reviewer identified with on many levels, especially when it came to what the hardship but very much the privilege of caregiving will bestow on caregivers: a lesson in humility as well as faith, hope, and love.I liked this book. It is honest and straight forward. It is meaningful and inspirational.Those who work with caregivers, those who are caregivers, and those who deal with caregivers in the workplace, family, and even the faith community, will benefit from reading this book.I rated this book five stars on GoodreadsNote: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a review. I thought this would be a great book to give my mother who is a caregiver for my father with parkinsons but was disappointed. Also impatient that george took an inordinate amount of responsibility both for the years of his marriage and after carol got sick. It is hard to truly know someone who never offers an opinion. It is also a burden to be the one who always has to make all the decisions with no input. Don't be so hard on yourself George! in sickness and in health is a vow we take and I agree that we have to accept situations that present themselves.But there is no sin in carving out moments for oneself amidst caregiving duties.We often wonder if we are "up to the task" when catastrophe strikes and often surprised to find that we can "step up"Kudos to George for finding the joy in that.The book is a bit repetitive and there are nuggets of wisdom we can all take away.But I wish he showed how he also made time for himself so I could pass it on to my parents.

As a spouse, daughter, and healthcare provider, this book offers so much insight.In this honest story, George shows us how even in our darkest moments, light, growth and joy can permeate. George's willingness to expose his shortcomings and vulnerabilities is admirable and relatable. It is easy to feel the weight he carried around and how he slowly, through redefining what his marriage meant to him and Carol, is able to shed that heaviness. The story definitely left me feeling reflective of my own marriage and wanting to a have they type of commitment these two shared.Though not an explicit goal of this read, it offers a unique perspective for healthcare professionals; the loved ones point of view. Similar to how Atul Gawande's "Being Mortal" offered a glimpse of our care from the patient's perspective, this story helps shed light on how we say and do things affects the family of our patients.Overall, this book offered laughs, tears and a lot to ponder. I didn't want it to end but also couldn't put it down so it was over in a flash.
