"Pan" poses as a straightforward account of a young man of thirty who takes his life into a forest, lives in a cabin with his dog Aesop and interacts with a handful of nearby villagers. He is bewitched by an alluring, very young woman who flirts with him but keeps him dangling. He is a forthright, sensual man blessed with sexual charisma (I'm paraphrasing here), possessing the eyes of an animal that makes a woman feel as though he were touching her. He also has great inwardness and is tormented by Edvarda's faithless vacillation. He turns to another young woman, Eva, with whom he commences a sexual liaison and claims, in his own mind, to love. But the book is a meditation, really, on sensuality and the tragedy of human interactions. The writing is so straightforward that it's almost disconcerting at first. It is a story of nuances narrated by a man who is befuddled by nuances and who strikes out at his fate with catastrophic outcomes for himself and those with whom he is connected.
Pan is a short, terse, novel about a reclusive "wild" man, Lieutenant Thomas Glahn, gifted with sexual charisma who idealizes nature and himself but is blind to his arrested development, his cruelty, and his enslavement to his own compulsive actions, which, as the novel progresses, have tragic consequences. By showing the disparity between Glahn's perception of himself, which is rather romantic and lofty, with the "other" Glahn, the uncouth, abrasive one who clashes with other people, Knut Hamsun succeeds in writing an ambiguous, mysterious fable about the conflict between solitude and civilization, and how the "self" cannot be defined in its isolated state.For an updated theme of the man being taken over by his inner beast, check out James Lasdun's modern masterpiece The Horned Man.
Knut Hamsun won the Nobel for literature in 1920 with his book GROWTH OF THE SOIL. After I read that book, I've been adding his books to my library and now have most of them. Some are better than others; PAN is one of the good ones. I'm glad that some of his books are being reprinted, albeit in paperback; but having a paperback is better than no book at all. If you are a Knut Hamsun devotee, you must have this book.
Hamsun is known principally for three works: 1) Hunger; 2) Pan; and 3) Growth of the Soil. I have read all three. I very much enjoyed the first and third -- but "Pan" was troubling. The format of the book is a first person narrative by a Lieutenant Thomas Glahn. There are three ways to interpret Glahn: 1) an overly sensitive type, along the lines of Goethe's Werther; 2) a disaffected modern city dweller; and 3) a psychopath. The more I read the novel, the more I leaned toward the third. In fact, for me he greatly resembled Conrad's Kurtz -- a clear psychopath. Glahn and Kurtz share the common characteristic that they inspire intense devotion -- even love -- but this typically leads to tragedy.I found the book painful to read. If Glahn is a true psychopath, then he is a fitting subject for psychiatry -- but less so for the casual reader. But read the book and judge for yourself!
Hamsun is my favorite author and this is one of his four best, in my opinion.
As promised
This is probably one of the best books I have ever read. In many ways it is unlike any other in its simplicity and beauty.
A story about a pathetic, egomaniac who enjoys seducing women. Why Hamsun wrote this story, I have no idea. Why it is called "Pan", I have no idea again. The story itself is a depiction of a horrendous man and two pathetic women. It reads like a story of teenagers in a century that I have no intimate knowledge of, nor can I relate to it, outside of recognizing childish behaviors. I know no quality of purpose in reading this novel. I read it out of curiosity and because it was written by Hamsun, a figure who is very foreign to me.
