Really good to help you brush up on DSM changes. Laminated and have holes punched. Keep it around somewhere or in a binder. If you need to learn the changes between the two DSMs, this will really help you.

I'm currently studying for my LCSW and purchased this to supplement other study material. This is not accurate at all. I've found many errors--too many to count. Will try to get a refund, but I wanted to post this to save others! I'm taking a practice test now and have missed questions because of wrong information (a lot of it doesn't reflect the changes b/w DSM 4 and 5).

In this DSM-5 Overview, the description of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder is identical to the description of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These are two different disorders. This is a significant error.

I like the format and the information. I was disappointed to realize that there are no code numbers provided. I probably could've figured that out before I ordered it, but I didn't. Other than that, it's a good tool.

Since you can look at the information before buying, no one should purchase this if it doesn't meet their needs. The product is what it is and can only provide what information it has. It is up the buyer to make sure they are buying what is applicable/needed for their situation. Is this overview perfect? No, but it is a very decent reference to be used in ADDITION to your DSM-5, and is particularly useful for classwork when you just need a quick reference to the DSM.This, and other products like it, are not replacements for having and knowing the information in the DSM-5. There are no shortcuts or cheap workarounds of the DSM-5, despite what many of us would LIKE to have. What products are touted as those sorts of things have turned out to be not nearly as helpful as they claim to be. I have looked for many of the same things desired by others, including a concise, abbreviated DSM-5 in pocket size or, at least, a more portable version than the full DSM-5. I've looked at both physical offerings and e-offerings and, unfortunately, I've found nothing that works, much less is helpful. I'd love to see someone produce these products as there is, obviously, a large audience desiring it and who would gladly pay for a physical handbook and/or e-format (searchable) offering.In addition to this overview, I also recommend: Dsm-5 Overview Of Dsm4 Changes and Brain (Quickstudy: Academic) if applicable to your needs. Both provide important information as quick references that are easy to carry with you, as well as work at study guides. I use them, along with the DSM-5 (and DSM-5® Made Easy: The Clinician's Guide to Diagnosis ) to help me get through current grad school classes. I daresay there are likely more charts/references/guides/books that would be very useful/helpful as well, I just haven't run across them yet. The good thing about helping materials is that you'll use them as references throughout your career, not just in school (unless/until they become obsolete, of course. See: DSM-4).

Very disappointed. Is not accurate for the DSM 5 changes. If you are a novice student studying for a psych 101 class, it will work. If you are a therapist (which I am), forget it.

This would have gotten 4 or even 5 stars for the overall quality of the product, laminate as well as useful information, but why in the world did they not include the diagnostic codes next to each dx, or at least for each dx category. This greatly diminished the quick reference usefulness to us therapists.We many who have failed to memorize all the different codes will nevertheless have to go to the book or manual to get these. Should have been unnecessary. So not such a "Quick Guide". Note to company: What were you thinking? (answer- you were not - dumb).

This is a great tool to assist students anxious about the DSM-5 to just get bite-size introduction to the entire manual. For the novice, it makes the size, breadth and depth of the DSM-5 manageable and workable; for the seasoned clinician it is a remarkably fast review and summary of the diagnosis. I will more likely use this for all my psychopathology and neurobiolgy classes. Further, the tough, laminated material makes it perfect for traveling and repeated using. Great for geeks like me!

About the Author

Steven M. Druker is a public interest attorney who, as executive director of the Alliance for Bio-Integrity, initiated a lawsuit that forced the FDA to divulge its files on genetically engineered foods. This revealed that politically appointed administrators had covered up the warnings of their own scientists about the unusual risks of these foods and then allowed them to be marketed illegally. In organizing the suit, he assembled an unprecedented coalition of eminent scientists and religious leaders to stand with his organization as co-plaintiffs - the first time scientists had sued a federal administrative agency on the grounds that one of its policies is scientifically unsound. He is a prominent commentator on the risks of GE foods and has served on the food safety panels at conferences held by the National Research Council and the FDA, has given lectures at numerous universities (including the Biological Laboratories at Harvard), and has met with government officials throughout the world, including the heads of food safety for France, Ireland, and Australia. In 1998, he was invited to the White House Executive Offices to discuss risks of GE crops with a task force of the President's Council on Environmental Quality. His articles on GE food have appeared in several respected publications, including The Congressional Quarterly Researcher, The Parliament Magazine, and The Financial Times. He earned his B.A. in philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley (with high honors that included a special award for "Outstanding Accomplishment") and received his Juris Doctor from the same institution (and was elected to both the Law Review and the legal honor society). in 2017 Steven was awarded the Luxembourg Peace Prize for Environmental Peace.

This was an interesting read. Steven Druker, filed a lawsuit against the FDA The book, Altered Genes, Twisted Truth, features a foreword by the renowned primatologist Dame Jane Goodall, hailing it as “without doubt one of the most important books of the last 50 years”.The book is the result of more than 15 years of intensive research and investigation by Druker, who came to prominence for initiating a lawsuit against the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that forced it to divulge its files on GM foods. Those files revealed that GM foods first achieved commercialisation in 1992 only because the FDA:• Covered up the extensive warnings of its own scientists about their dangers.• Lied about the facts.• And then violated federal food safety law by permitting these foods to be marketed without having been proven safe through standard testing.The book points out that if the FDA had heeded its own experts’ advice and publicly acknowledged their warnings that GM foods entailed higher risks than their conventional counterparts, the GM food venture would have imploded and never gained traction anywhere.I was completely shocked by what I read.

I have just finished soldiering my way through this, and like other readers I have been shocked by what I have learned. It's a long book, with some repetitions of material and conclusions, but the level of detail is incredible. I was slightly confused by a couple of referenced to Appendix D which doesn't exist (in the Kindle format, at least) and for that matter neither does Appendix C - never mind.The book tells in long but readable form the sorry story of the history of GM food in the US and elsewhere. It's stunning to learn that the marketing and sale of such foods is effectively illegal in the US, and not much better elsewhere, and equally astonishing that this situation has persisted for so long.I liked the sections on how exactly these organisms are manipulated, because armed with this information one is far better placed to deal with the rest of the information in the book, and also better armed and informed about how and why these things are just so scary and unproven.The support of so many scientific organisations for something based on unsound information and research (or indeed a complete absence of such) is also surprising and shocking. But the details are there, and therefore I have no reason to believe that Mr Druker is not giving us the truth. Also amazing is the degree to which so many scientists have been ready to align themselves with the biotech industry when the evidence is just not there.Personally, until I read this book I wasn't particularly in favour of GM, but then that was mostly just based on an idea that maybe we had overstretched ourselves in trying to do what we are doing. The battle with evolution in herbicide resitant crops, for example, an endeavor on which even King Canute would have been reluctant to embark. But now... now I just can't believe what we are opening ourselves up to. I will now go out of my way to avoid GMO, and to spread the word on how and why it's a technology that we simply must abandon.Read the book, get informed, change your life.

Having a degree in molecular biology from way back in 1967, I was somewhat familiar with the technical description of cellular biology and DNA in this book. I have always had an uneasy feeling about GMO's and wanted to avoid them, but now I know why. In the late 1980's my mother suffered from chronic insomnia. I was a practicing pharmacist and wanting to avoid the "sleeping pill" route, suggested she take L Tryptophan never knowing it could have killed her. She took the supplement and as a result was very sick for many months but did recover. L Tryptophan was taken off the shelves and I never did hear why. Not until I read Altered Genes, Twisted Truth. That L Tryptophan she took was the first example of the horrendous side effects of a supplement produced by GMO bacteria. For me the most interesting chapter concerned the comparison of computer "code" with the complexity of the "code" involving DNA and other proteins in the cell. A very compelling argument that bioengineering should more accurately be called "biohacking." I appreciate the optimism that the author displays as far as getting rid of GMO's altogether, but doubt it will happen. In my opinion, politicians don't really rule this country--megacorporations do. Monsanto would never allow their GMO's to be banned. It's all about money. They make Round UP resistant soybeans and with it sell Round Up. Too many corporations make too much money on GMO's and the science of GMO's is not understood by too many people. I do hope that we can get them labeled, though. That would be a step in the right direction.

Fantastic primer for Zizek and his anti-ideology ideology as it was written post-911 but pre Brexit/Trump. His humor and sensibility are on full display, and his critical deconstruction is far more limited to current topics in this book, which allows for a sort of relatable read for anyone looking to read Zizek but who might not have intellectual prowess or philosophical preparedness to read some of the more complex Lacanian-influenced works. It's an easy read even without a thorough understanding of Hegel or Marx or Kant, and those I've shared it with whom don't possess much philosophical knowledge or background have reported it made them ponder a great deal, and allowed for conversations about some of the issues and ideas Zizek raises pretty succinctly throughout the work.

I like Zizek. His irreverence and equal measure Aristotelean logician and Groucho Marx infused with Hegel and George Carlin work for me. And I certainly understand his anger and frustration and sense of urgency given the mess we are all in. The paradoxes and the contradictions posed by the hegemonic authoritarian powers in teh world today anger him and as you read his analyses, they should anger you as well. If they don't, you're the problem.His observations on what the Haitian revolution of 1804 meant were written prior to the earthquake but now resonate with near clairvoyant insight, as does his deconstruction of the wealth of ids like Bill Gates. He knows exactly where the dangers are as humanity attempts to right itself and move beyond the collapses it has nearly effected. Zizke isn't sure we are really going to do that unless we take action that isn't an attempt to have both a socialist and capitalist set of pies and eat them as well.And that's the problem. He hasn't real answers either. It is easy enough to punch holes through Obama (an empty suit if there ever was one), Putin and Berlusconi (two thugs in competing in gangs), Hu Jintao (The Dr No of the 21st Century). Zizek finds little reason to retry strategies of the past that were inspired by Marx, but does look for an Hegelian dialectical answer that does not repeat same old startegies, expecting a different result. That is an insanity that he is convinced we can ill afford to humour. I think he is or should be looking more closely at Sartre's notion of the "group in fusion". Sartre was quick to point out that unless the group constantly redefines the next cause to come together to resolve/overcome/conquer, the group falls back into self absorbed singularities. As Zizek points out, the age of nations (a very big singularity) is over. Capitalism does not respect the integrity of any individual, be it person, culture, country; nor do the fundamentalist terrorists of any stripe (Christian, Jewish, Islamic); nor does organized crime (the Mob, Russia, Goldma Sachs). Thus why should those of us bearing the brunt of their self absorption?Exactly what steps and what directions to take are unclear. What is certain is that it is going to cost blood. Time is not in our favour. Sartre would insist that the leaders of the groups in fusion keep the targets in front, keep fueling the dialectical struggle. Hegel would expect nothing less.This is a provactive book and is especially clear on delineating exactly what the issues are and how very, very difficult it will be to resolve them. Failure to do so will leave us smeared with teh farce of our own destruction, much like placing your head between your knees to prepare for a crash.

As a reader of Zizek most of this is covered in other books. In Defense of Lost Causes immediately comes to mind. But if you don't want to slough through a 500 page tome but want to look at the latest political reflections by Slavoj Zizek then this book is a good introduction.Also of note, this may be one of the few books criticizing today's political Left that's by a Leftist(although albeit radical Marxist one)and as such is a better and more well rounded critique concerning the path of the Left. Zizek's style is for experienced readers, one cannot just simply walk into one of Zizek's books and expect the dry pedantic style that plagues much of contemporary academic reading. It takes some skill to recognize what Zizek is arguing, but once you find that hidden gem, you gain an insight into why the system crashed.

Zizek delivers a chaotic collage of observations and adventurous speculations, while skillfully avoiding any conclusions to any of it. Some of the thinking might be even brilliant but, again, it leads nowhere. His pro-communist chapter is particularly disappointing in that regard; I was really interested in reading something more specific, a vision that would at least deserve some consideration. He wouldn't even define communism - after all, it does seem that if one wants to be a communist the term itself needs redefining... Zizek is a good showman, knows how to keep the reader glued to the page so the book is perfect for a 3-4 hour flight. Entertaining author with lots of potential. He just gets continuously lost in thousands of facts and semi-conclusions; his constant mixing of social thought with philosophy and psychoanalysis produces some sort of a salad bar situation. I think the "intellectual virtuoso" style is supposed to impress the reader but this kind of delivery will not sell for long if it doesn't improve. There is some knowledge here (academic and otherwise) and plenty of unorthodox thinking, but you will find no depth and no wisdom. Sorry.

Zizek is generally regarded as being at the vanguard of the modern left. And reading this book one can easily see why. It is like Zizek is the prosecuting lawyer and capitalism the accused, and capitalism doesn't stand a chance. What are the charges? That the recent bailouts of 2008 were not some anomaly of capitalism, not some unforeseen error but a wilful and inevitable result of a system that is flawed from the outset. I would not only recommend this book but make it compulsory reading for everyone at the voting age.

Slavoj Zizek book "First as Tragedy, then as Farce" present a very powerful argument for struggle for ideals. The first half of the book calls for the left to re-enter the ideological debate about democracy and the future society, because cultural capitalism will incorporate old left words, but the vision of the future cultural capitalism will jettison to the side.Slavoj re-asserts again the importance communism again. I strongly suggest the left to read and debate this book today.

I loved this book, perhaps even better than some of the other seminal books in psychology, like those by Kahneman and Seligman.The technical and explanatory level is excellent and convincing AND the stories are very interesting and well-written, even entertaining in many ways.It is relatively easy to read even though it does go deep, with 77 pages of notes. And I would estimate that, for anyone who read it and thought about it, it would start a cascade of observations and adjustments in how one thought of reality, one’s beliefs, and one’s behaviors. Reading the book will likely cause certain unperceived realities to become blatantly and blaringly obvious, in flashing neon lights. Life will never be the same after it, if you apply it, of course.I would place it in the “necessary for reading” list for those who want a better life. And, different than many books that one reads to “grow”, this has massive substance in relatively little space. (See also Shermer’s The Believing Brain, which is a great complement to this book, helping to shatter false beliefs that lead us into less than great lives...)Its worth a read, with lots of highlighting, and then a review and then a plan to implant it. I will be making a summary table of the key realities and how we can adjust to make our lives work better by refining where evolution has left us (with a number of things that do not work in this modern environment). From this we can fashion our own adaptation, but much quicker than the slow, limited process of evolution.After all, the key trait of man that caused his survival is “adaptation”, so doing our own intention caused adaptation seems an appropriate thing to do in this world if we truly want to be happy....

Amazon seems to be lumping all different editions together in the reviews so it is impossible to know which edition you are reading about. Had it been clear that THIS printing was awful, i would not have purchased it. This has a brown cover with a picture of London on it. It was about $3. I received it today, and it is obviously a cheap home print job--thin, barely laminated cover, weird size (about 6x8"), very thin (entire book crammed into 45 pages). I bought it for first of three kids to read for school; this is not something I want to keep on my bookshelves for a while. It's a classic; I want a halfway decent copy. Child will continue to read it on free Kindle edition for now, and I'm ordering a new copy from a "known" publisher. Don't buy this one--

Beware...bought this because my 6th grader has to read it for school, thought he would enjoy an illustrated version. The issues...this book looks home made and for some strange reason the illustrations are all photos of artwork of naked ladies...not pictures from the story about DOGS!!!! The font for the story is literally all different sizes and and the layout is crazy. Really really surprised and disappointed!

He regains everything he had lost and seems even more virile and strong than the best of past times. Buck serves his master, even helping him add to his fortunes. When everything seems hunky dory, something tells Buck his place is in the wild. When the call of the wild is received it does not go unheeded.Meanwhile his master and associates are killed by native Indians.Trust Buck to take revenge and kill them all, establishing his superiority over even man himself. A moving portrayal of the before and after of 9/11 and how it affects two teens and their families. Alia is a Muslim teen trying to break free of her parents’ wishes. She ends up at her father’s workplace in the Twin Towers on Sept 11, 2001. Jesse McLaurin is a teenager who lost her brother in the 9/11 tragedy. Jesse’s family is now broken and silent about the event. Alternating narratives tell how the past informs the present, and how grief and memory merge and linger.Warning to readers: this is a slow read at the beginning. It took almost 35% before the action really built. And it’s somber, as befits the topic. But the thing is, even though this isn’t an easy read, I think it’s one worth reading, for a few reasons:1) I’ve never read a book that tries to portray what happened on 9/11 to people who were in the Towers. I felt this was done accurately, honestly, and respectfully for a teen audience.2) The portrayal of grief, trauma, and a family still broken by what happened that day was really well done as well, showing the after effects of 9/11, even 15 years later.3) This book tackles racial issues, hatred, prejudice, and grief in a way that is really compassionate and comprehensible.If I have qualms, they are that I just didn’t fully connect with either Alia or Jesse. I think the concept of the book overcame the actual characterization of them. That said, I’m glad I read All We Have Left. It showed such a variety of perspectives on grief and trauma, and how to articulate and move past them. It definitely made me think about how we’ve changed as people and as a world after 9/11 .Teachers, this is one for the school library and the classroom, and it’s a great one to spark discussion.

GRADE: BOn September 11, 2001 Alia skips school to see her father at work in The World Trade Centers. In 2016 Jesse must perform community service at a Muslim Peace Center after being caught making anti Islamic graffiti. Their stories intersect in surprising ways.The first quarter of ALL WE HAVE LEFT started slowly, but the pace picked up and near the end I almost felt like I was reading a thriller, eager to discover if Alia survived. Wendy Mills did phenomenal research into 9/11 and the Muslim community, not painting the Islamic characters with a broad brush. Each had unique personalities and approaches to their faith. Some wore hijabs, others did not.Mills created a diverse cast of minor character with different personalities and beliefs. While ALL WE HAVE LEFT is an issues book about prejudice, I never felt that Mills was heavy handed in her message of the complexities of hate. There were no easy answers and no one character had the complete moral high ground.The intersection between past and present, Alia's and Jesse's stories, though mostly indirect, unfolded organically without artificial coincidences.ALL WE HAVE LEFT is a timely story, and Islamic prejudice is still prominent in the USA. I think this novel would be great reading for middle or high school students.

She just gets it.I think it is very brave of her to venture into writing a book like this that is extremely thought-provoking and deals with many controversial and difficult issues. She handles it really well though, and with the utmost respect to all sides and parties involved. Not to mention that her prose is beautiful. She succeeds in being poignant, witty, creative, and honest all at once, displaying a writing skill that leaves you green with envy.Every interaction, every moment, every emotion, every action was on point. The struggles, emotionally, physically and most importantly, spiritually, were incredibly relatable. As a teenager, as a mother, as a female, as a Muslim, as an Arab, Mills was able to tap into every aspect in ways that no other author, especially a White American (and I say this with so much respect for her), was able to. I have never before read a book about a Muslim girl, her struggles and 9/11 that was so honest and true to our experiences as Muslim girls. It is honest and raw, and many people might find that unacceptable, or might have an issue with how some experiences were related, but all I have to say to that is: you can live in denial all you want, but those are real experiences that even Muslims (both guys and girls) go through and struggle with. No one is perfect, and this is your reality check.All We Have Left tells the story of two coming-of-age girls, one in the present, the other in the past. It talks about their experiences with 9/11, one right in the midst of it, the other many years later and the affect it's had (and still has) on her family.You always hear about the world being divided into before 9/11 and after 9/11, and this book portrays those two timelines perfectly. On one end of the spectrum you have Alia, who rushes to catch her dad at his office before going to school because she needs him to sign a slip of paper. Her father works at the World Trade Centre, and on that morning, when she gets in the elevator with a boy called Travis, the elevator stops working, and they get stuck inside for a while. What happens next is gut-wrenching, terrifying and will leave you sitting at the edge of your seats.On the other end of the spectrum is Jesse, a sixteen-year-old troubled girl, who had lost her older brother almost fifteen years ago at the September 11 attacks, and although she barely remembers him, but his ghost and presence had continued to haunt her family. His death changed her parents, split her family apart, and had a direct effect to the person she grew up to be. So many details about her brother's death remain a mystery to her, the reason he was in the towers at the time of the attacks is unknown to her family, and they've always refused to speak to anyone publicly about it. Instead, her mother keeps herself busy with work and her father spends his time watching the news and raging at the Muslim terrorists. Jesse grew up in an extremely racist household. She grew up listening to her father bad mouthing every Muslim, and spouting so much hate towards them, wishing them dead or worse. She grew up grieving for a brother she never knew, she grew up with an identity that was thrown at her - the girl whose brother died tragically in 9/11 - and she grew up blaming all Muslims for the death of her 18 year old brother.Not surprising then when Jesse gets involved with a bunch of graffiti artists who put out anti-Muslim messages around town. Except, with Jesse's bad luck, she ends up getting caught and having to do community service at a Muslim Peace Center. This experience makes her question everything she knew and thought of them and allows her to learn more about herself. It also brings up questions of her brother, and makes her curious to find out what really happened to him that day.As she delves into the past, we get both stories told simultaneously, one from Alia's perspective and the other from Jesse's. As the past and the present gently collide and meet in the middle, we watch as the two girls' worlds interweave together so it all makes sense, and balances out perfectly, all while breaking our hearts.At one point, I could feel myself breath heavy, like a weight was sitting on my chest, and I needed to thrash and scream to get it off me. It's that kind of book, with that kind of emotion.I have so much respect for Mills, for how she handled the stories and events and for not sugarcoating any of it. I loved the character development of both girls. Jesse's character development spanned a longer period of time, whereas Alia's character development spanned the course of a few hours - and that alone, is an impressive feat. I also loved all the secondary characters and the role they played in the development of our protagonists.This book is a keeper. It's a lesson. Its one for the teachers at schools. It's one for the parents at home.This book is important.

It's full of great ideas and covers many aspects of writing such as: characterisation, plot, setting, editing and revision. I found it useful and liked the emphasis on using detail in writing.
