I love this book... the story is inspiring, easy to follow, and not cliche or too predictable. often times, with fiction books, I find myself irked early on in the story when the writing is poor/too cliche, but that was not the case with this one. it was my first fiction book in a while I was really happy with!

Oh, my goodness! I was sad when the book ended. Ms. Nayeri crafts such flawed and beautiful characters that I was really disappointed to have to say good-bye! The themes of displacement, love, family, loyalty and trauma loom large. I want more!!!

I had to read this for book club selection. It was not for me. Can not recommend it.

This book will make you think about home.

A necessary narrative, but it dragged at times. Overall, it was very compelling and enlightening. I'm glad I read it!

I really enjoyed the novel and I am reading her other novel "a teaspoon of earth and Sea"

I absolutely loved this novel. This is a beautiful book about the immigrant experience for Persians in Amsterdam, which is quite different from that of those in Los Angeles. It's about addiction, food, the relationship of a father and her daughter, abandonment, divorce, trying to escape from your own culture, tribe, and ultimately finding yourself, falling in love with yourself and embracing your tribe. I loved her anthropological categorization of Persians outside Iran into four groups. I loved her description of how fathers treating their daughters badly leads to mothers spoiling their sons which leads to the sons becoming fathers who treat their wives badly. The author is brilliant, sharp, sweet, honest, open and so gracious to answer our questions by phone during our book club. I'm looking forward to reading her first novel and future works.

This is a wonderful narration that both captivates and educates. I am grateful for this book and and hope there will be more.

A realistic examination of a fascinating young reformer, called away from the quiet life of a nun as the last remaining survivor of an assassination attempt on her entire family. As she fights to avenge her father and brother alongside strong warriors and advisers who had served her family well, she uses her wit and ingenuity to tackle the challenges of rulership--one of which will always be staying alive in this brutal society. (One inspired by feudal Asian and Native American culture to a degree, if I'm not mistaken, but with its own special flair as well.)Mara is a heroine and role model engineered to inspire the reader to think outside the box. She's human, but she's marvelously sharp-minded and compassionate at the same time. While Feist's female characters in his solo work often failed to impress, Mara does not. Janny Wurts seems to make up for his deficits (perhaps he makes up for hers as well; I've not read her solo work yet) and together they carved a pure masterpiece.I wish I could gift this trilogy to everyone I know. It's brilliant, it has appeal whatever your gender, and whatever your personal tastes there'll be something to intrigue you. Even though it's political in ways, the backstabbing and venomous nature of this vicious society with its cruel laws is unspeakably fascinating. This is a person daring to challenge the status quo of a stagnating culture, which any American tired of their political system can identify with as wish fulfillment. There are tales of romance sprinkled in, but they are far from trite or rosy or maudlin; there is real peril to happiness and there are issues larger than love. The battles are heart-pounding because they are so personal. It's not as evil as Game of Thrones, but you will end up wondering which of your most-beloved characters will survive, and how.I reread these books every year or so and they never get boring. Worth every penny and much more. Vastly under-rated and under-recognized. I hope that this changes.

Though I am not familiar with the Riftwar Cyle, the setting of Daughter of the Empire is distinctly Second World Low Fantasy. I categorize it as Low Fantasy, as there is no evident magic in Book 1; though the same could be said about Game of Thrones until later on.Whether or not the characters were Asian, I couldn’t tell; but with an Emperor-like figure ruling in name, but a Shogun-like figure known as the Warlord ruling in fact, it felt like Warring States Japan. The comparisons continue, with a “Game of the Council” representing the plotting, alliance-building, backstabbing, and warfare that has to follow exacting conventions.Untrained in this Game of the Council, sole POV character Mara must quickly learn how to lead when she unexpectedly and suddenly inherits leadership of her clan. At the start of the story, she is about to become a nun when she learns her father and brother were slain in a treacherous ploy by a rival clan. What I found especially enjoyable about her as a main character is that she is not a “Chosen One.” She’s not a warrior, or a mage, or have any other special abilities beyond her own intelligence and wit.Driven to protect her clan and live up to the legacy of her father, she takes many risks and faces many dangers—from marrying a brute who is tied to a powerful family to confronting a rival warlord on his own estate. She is helped by her childhood nanny and two bodyguards, as well as a spymaster and bandit leader whom she must win over. All the characters are distinctive enough to form a strong mental image.Beyond the Game of the Council, the story feels real with lush world building, organically described without infodumps or stilted dialog. One element that stood out to me was an Ant-like race, complete with Queens, which excel at both combat and craftsmanship.

I have read all the books in the Riftwar saga numerous times, and now that they are all available on kindle am reading again. I didn’t leave a review for each, but I feel that Daughter of the Empire deserves accolades. Amazing development of storyline and characters.

A young woman unexpectedly takes on leadership of her family's feudal holdings, with its people, properties and politics. Mara responds to the constraints and dangers of her world with intelligence, creativity and boldness. She builds nuanced relationships with the strong, key individuals who work with her to preserve the "House" that gives them all security, purpose and honor. Political and physical danger, intelligence, courage, and the strong influence of cultural mores keeps the story moving from one challenge to the next.

I'm currently on the third book of the Empire Trilogy. This has been one of the best fantasy fiction books that I have read in a long time. Tons of plots, magic, swords, twists. Lots of depth to all the characters. You get to see realistic human mistakes made by the heroine and the villains. But, I strongly recommend reading the Riftwar Saga series (starting with Book 1 "Magician") in order to start understanding the Tsurani culture of honor. If you lose the Great Game, not only is your family dead, but your entire clan may be destroyed.

Frantic action and great character development. Intrigue, magic, and a hint of more to come. True fantasy. Solid imagery, and great reading. A truly good escape from daily life.

I've read better books in the fantasy genre, but I liked seeing a female lead character for once, part of the nobility in a Japanese inspired feudal culture on a foreign world. The political machinations in the plot were interesting but sometimes their resolution was a bit too pat or convenient. An easy read and part of a trilogy. Not sure yet if I'll move on to the next book.

Normally, I use Lonely Planet's guide though I used Rough Guide for Egypt and Bradt for Iraq. And I do like Bradt's approach and organization of material. They give a detailed picture of the country's history and are quite specific about current conditions. The book is more personalized than other reference books. A bit more than a compilation of facts. And I liked the maps. Recommend it.

I bought this book for my grand daughter, who is a budding artist. Since she was around six years old, she's showed a bent for drawing and sketching. In the past few years I've given her different books o sketching: how to sketch apples or oranges,how to sketch trees, how to sketch fairly simple objects.Now she seems to be able to move on to more complicated subjects. This book seems to fill that need very well. She was thrilled to get this book, and hasn't put it down since she received it.

My first "Art" -book and a good read. Would have rated it higher had the graphics displayed better on my Samsung Tab3. Also, that might be a function of the Kindle App not allowing for an enlarged view on my device. Overall, 4 star rating is the best i can do. Enjoy.

Usually its a 2 or 3 stages of picture from sketch to detailed result. Examples look good, making you want to draw like author.Book covers drawing using pencil and has a few chapters about pen and ink drawing.Highly recommend it for anyone who want to obtain a skill of drawing.

We just can't stand the thought of them in danger & we've always stood between them & anything that would hurt them. But they are adults & we have to give God room to work in their hearts. We keep the lines open by loving them without reservation but respecting their decisions. I LOVE the way Bruce backs her up & encourages her through the hard times. They have found their love & their faith is solid.The story is well written & flows so smoothly that you feel like you are there. As book 2 of the series, it could comfortably be read as a stand alone but you will enjoy it so much more if you read book 1 first.

I was so blown away by this story. Wendy and Bruce have come a long way in a very short time. Paige, Wendy’s daughter, has been a real challenge, but her mother hasn’t given up on her and neither has Bruce. They both love their kids as much, if not more than God. So far Wendy has been able to accept the issues thrown in her path. And there are some big issues. Bruce has been there for her at every turn. This story is so insightful. I think it’s a very important read.

Best book I have read in a very long time! How refreshing to read a romance between mature adults. This book is much more than a romance though. It deals with our relationship with God. It deals wth homeless and with family dynamics. It also deals with the impact in a family when they discover a member is gay. This book explores a mature romance but alsomany problems in our society and handles them in a Christian way.

I wish there were more than 5 stars to rate this story! I completely feel in love with the family, so much I truly identified with the mother as she dealt with changes in her family. It caused so many different emotions...but God is good all the time!

And again . . . she writes an amazing story that makes you want to be part of it!! Broken lives, amazing marriage, salvation . . . .this book has it all!!

This book was well written, couldn't stop reading. Loved it from the first page to the last. Would recommend these books to anyone, can't wait for book 3.
