Admittedly, we are massive, monster, huge, epic Superman fans. And yes, we are actually in this book...annnnnd to be even more honest I was a bit taken aback to discover my wedding was in a book thanks to my most beloved husband. Surprise! However, we own a lot of Superman books.Like...umm...over a zillion. He keeps buying them. Sometimes the same ones. There are at this very moment 15 that have spilled over onto my shelf from his bookcase. I have to concede, this IS a great Superman read. Why? Because it is an easy, light FUN read. and it is part of every child's imagination. This isn't a heavy tome dedicated to the Mythology of the Superman image--got that one--it hasn't really been read completely. It isn't a comic type homage filled with fluff photos and zero content. It actually is a really nicely balanced view of what Superman has been to our culture, and how the idea of one Superhero has become part of so many lives on a personal level. Is it an academic read? Ehhh..I could cite it--but I read it on the couch. And I laughed, because I found other folks like us who have embraced the Superman ideal and their stories were shared. So for a sweeping overview of an icon pretty good read, for a personal glimpse into the lives of others (and my wedding!), it was cool. For one of the few times, I'm really glad this one was added to the shelf.

As a 7 year old growing up in rural Colombia I obsessed about Superman. He was all I wished to be: strong, noble and beloved by all. Instead of enslaving all of humanity as many would have done in his place, Supes dedicated himself to serving others and even seemed to enjoy playing the role of nerdish weakling Clark Kent (I, as all children, assumed that Kent was the me that was and Superman was the me that could be, just waiting under my shirt). The TV cartoons were the highlight of my week (in black and white, natch and sometimes almost undeciferable due to poor signal). The comic books were hard to come by- they could only be had when someone traveled to larger towns over unpaved roads. They were the wonderful Editorial Novaro Mexican editions, which in my humble view were lovelier than the US editions. One never gets over a first love, and mine was Superman, although I empathized more with Superboy who after all also lived in a small town with his (step-) parents and had a crush on lovely redhead Lana Lang. Don't even get me started on the Legion of Superheroes. I still recall the large size Legion v. Mordru special where Superboy gets to kiss the beautiful (although blue-tinged) Phantom Girl and then both of them and some of their colleagues bury Mordru under a huge diamond. Don't tell me that wouldn't be great.Anyway, I love books about Superman. It becomes harder for these books to say things we (faithful, true-blue) Superman fanboys don't know or expect, so there's no way there won't be overlap with other books, such as Jake Rossen's "Superman v. Hollywood", or Gerard Jones's "Men of Tomorrow" or David Hadju's "The Ten Cent Plague". There's no way the author won't make mistakes or ommissions that we will notice gleefully, like assuming that all super-creatures (including Titano and Streaky) originate from Krypton, or that there's no crystal Kryptonite. But we still enjoy these books, particularly when, as in this case, there is so much love and respect for Superman and the people who created him and brought him to us.Superman stands aside from the sordidness of business dealings and the grabbiness of executives and of his creators and their relatives, from the tacky merchandising and the failed movies and weak storylines, from the current prostration of the comic book business. From the talk about synergies and multiple platforms. He stands inside many of us, untouched and pristine, as we were in our childhood.

I grew up on "Adventures of Superman" with George Reeves and read comics in the late 50's and early 60's. I own the TV series and two movie serials and have always been a fan. Have watched the Reeve movies and most recent reboots. I had not kept up with all of the updates and variations that have occurred in the world of Superman. This book is a very good history of the character giving how all of the formats tied in with each other or in some cases didn't until a later time when there was more reinvention of his history and powers or the villains or his "costars". The only reason I didn't rate this with five stars is that it wasn't as fast a read as I thought it would be but I was still very pleased with it. Not a kids' book in the way it is handled.

This painstaking and dispassionate history of how Superman came to be, in all the media and product incarnations, tells a riveting, exhaustive American story. While Superman's origins were in the Jewish immigrant and son-of-immigrant slice of America, his story is universal: being an Other, a stranger in a strange land with invisible powers that are always used for good.If you are not interested in Superman or grew up without Superman, Batman, Spiderman, or any other superheroes in your consciousness, don't bother reading this book; but if you sneaked comic books passed adults, tied a towel around your neck to run around playing, and you want some insight into a large chunk of American and kid DNA, read it and enjoy.Well written, well researched.

The book covered everything from the first Action Comic appearance thru the Superman Radio show of the 30s and 40s, 1950's TV show, the full set of 70's 80-'s and 90's movies. It explains the life and the times of the creators, various writers, actors, who made the "Man of Steel" who he is today. The thing I also liked about the book was the way it explained how the "Superman" stories effected each generation, of followers.

I have to say this book really surprised me. I bought by accident and had no intent to read it myself but gave it a shot. In a few pages I was hooked. It is Chuck full of very interesting elements. I do remember superman on TV but never read comics so why would this draw me in, the story is really interesting how different superman personas were strategized over the years.

The "Song of the Lioness" quartet is a rare example of a story with blatant messages and political leanings that nonetheless manages retain a natural storytelling feel and, as a result, natural entertainment value. It is at heart a children's book, and while the "Protector of the Small" quartet is superior (and more interesting) in several aspects, I would still recommend reading this series before that one, as it tells the stories of several characters who re-appear in "Protector," including the protagonist Alanna herself, who plays a small but important part in Keladry's adventures in the latter series, and Prince Jonathan, who is King Jonathan by the time "Protector" rolls around. This is by my understanding the first series of stories written in Tamora Pierce's "Tortall" fantasy setting, even if it is not the first story in chronological sequence, and so works just fine as an entry point. Readers who enjoy the kind of quality children's-story and/or young-adult story as the likes of Harry Potter will probably find the way the Tortall books are written engaging, even if the subject matter is very different. Overall, I strongly recommend this series, as well as the extended Tortall library.

This is an excellent series centered on Alanna of Trebond. The series starts with Alanna convincing her twin brother to switch places. He doesn’t want to become a knight – he wants to be a great sorcerer. Alanna doesn’t want to learn to sew and dance, becoming a Lady - she wants to become a great knight. At 8 years old, Alanna decides to take the fate of herself and her brother, who doesn't take too much convincing, into her own hands. How were they going to pull this off? How were they even going to convince the servants who care for them? I was intrigued from the very first page. Being female she is smaller than her fellow pages and so must work harder, be better at all the weapons and games, and still manage to hide her true nature. She faces all the challenges of growing up - new places, new people, new situations, who to trust, how to stand up for herself but be true to her nature, how to succeed against stiff odds and more. Alanna wants nothing more than adventure in her life but must make tough choices to fulfill that desire.Tamora Pierce, the author, writes from the perspective of the child and explores this character’s life in an entertaining, realistic and engrossing manner. The first book was published in 1983, when my own daughter was only 6 years old, and it was a series that we enjoyed together.I've just finished re-reading the series and it was just as good the second read. If you want to give your child a worthy, good role model I highly recommend Alanna. My Granddaughter Winter is only 3 months old and I look forward to sharing it with her.

This was my least favorite of the Alanna books, but that's like saying Ringo was my least favorite Beatle. Each book or series by Tamora Pierce is a treasure: I inhaled them in fifth grade, sixth grade, seventh grade...through high school, and then after as the book kept coming out. I give this writer a lot of credit for unconsciously instilling feminist values in me at a young age, while growing up in a highly patriarchal Midwestern town. Tamora, if that was your aim, kudos. I owe you so much.

I would give this five stars but the last book is missing pages 151 through 180 and considering i spent 25 dollars on the set i would expect it to have all of the pages in all of the books

Tamora Pierce gives us book three in her series Song of the Lioness. It continues with fresh material and an exciting plot that keeps the pages turning. If you haven't read the other two books that come before it, you will miss out on the rich history, but the book can be read as a stand-alone novel. In this installment, Alanna, who became the first lady knight by keeping her gender a secret, has escaped to the desert after having her identity revealed during a sword fight to protect the Queen. She meets a new challenge with the desert people, the Bahzir. Here she must learn to become part of their society, but she turns it upside down at the same time.If you like adventure, sword fighting and light romance set in an ancient society where knights protected the land, then I recommend this book to you. Ms. Pierce paints a memorable picture that will hook you to read more.

I love this book and it was always one of my favorites growing up. My mother read the series then passed it on to me, and to this day at 25 years old I love to re-read this captivating series about the empowered woman who does what it takes to accomplish her dreams. My daughter is only 2, but when she gets older I will pass these books to her and in the mean time I will recommend them to anyone else who enjoys fantasy and excellent writing. They may be "young reader," but Tamora Pierce writes in a way that draws you into her story and really lets you relate with her characters. This world of magic and knights is reminiscent of the middle ages of King Arthur and Merlin, but with a new world twist that makes the concept new and exciting. Join Alanna on her daring journey to finding out who she is and making her own place in the world that doesn't want to accept her. A truly inspiring series about being yourself and finding your path when the odds are against you.

This edition is gorgeous. I purchased it because I'd read some of the books decades ago and wanted to own them to reread then loan out. This set is a fabulous example of middle grade fantasy with an intricate plot and relatable characters.

This book chronicles Alanna’s introduction to the desert people and her adoption into one of the tribes. She brings many changes and much upheaval to the tribe. I didn’t like this one quite as much as the previous book, but I did enjoy reading it. My only complaint is that the end of the book was more of a setup for the next book rather a true ending to this story.

inspiring and relatable and equally hilarious. so much to laugh about if you are chinese (those "little plastic chairs for sitting on the kitchen floor..." had me laughing so hard), so much empathy if you are an american chinese ("following your dreams is how you become homeless..."), and so much wisdom that anyone could take to heart ("being american is opportunity and choice..."). one of my new favorite memoirs!

You feel like he’s a buddy from school who followed his dream and made it big. But was still your buddy.

I would recommend this book to everyone who moved from Asia to America. Jimmy is a funny guy; his jokes made my stomach hurt from laughing too much. Even though I didn't know Jimmy was an actor and half of his book focused on his way to success in Hollywood, I still think this book is inspiring and worth the read.

I really enjoyed this. Jimmy's story is relatable to a lot of modern first-gen Asian immigrants trying to find their way in Western society without leaving their home culture behind. Even more important than the story are the insights he shares with it, and arguably the most important ones come from the point where he thinks he "made it."It's a quick read, too.

Being a fan of his work, I constantly had a mental picture of the author going through his life experiences. I was smiling most of the time I was reading this book. It is a great story during a time where we can use a reminder of what makes America great.

This was a quick and enjoyable read. Jimmy O. Yang describes his inner feelings and aspirations as a young immigrant in a thoughtful and touching way. His successes are impressive, and I predict a bright and productive future for him.

Wow. I have been a fan of Jimmy O. Yang for a good while, and I must say this was a very well written autobiography of an immigrant who overcame adversity to achieve what he ultimately considers his American Dream. I'm a fan of underdog stories, and I honestly read this book from beginning to end in one day. It was difficult to stop reading without satisfying my curiosity about Mr. O. Yang's journey into success while also finding his experiences somewhat similar to my own. I hope, one day, Mr. O. Yang translates this into a feature film to which I would most definitely watch. A must read for anyone who has ever felt like an underdog who feels they can't win; an outsider trying to fit in; a seemingly hopeless visionary fighting to make their dreams a reality; a person who may feel foreign yet familiar in their own skin within different worlds. Thank you, Mr. O. Yang, for sharing your story; it is truly inspirational.

The story clicks well with any Chinese immigrants, and yet Jimmy has chosen a very unique path. It makes me think about the meaning of life and the value of American dream. Thanks.

I love this book. I bought this for my kids to learn how to draw chibis and was totally impressed with this book. It includes tracing paper and drawing paper, has loads of cute characters all broken down into steps and includes information on expressions, how to draw hair and eyes and body postures as well as much more. The book is small and convenient for a child to carry. This was even better than I expected it to be and think it would be a useful tool for an artist of any age looking to get into this art style. Love it.

Present for my Daughter. She loves it. She has been drawing things ever since. The figures are cute and the diagrams are okay. Hopefully this will help her blossom into a Manga artist.

A super cute and handy how to draw book! I got it for my cousin who is a beginner artist and I'm so excited to give it to her. It has tracing paper and grid sections to help learners get a good grasp on proportions and how to draw standard chinos. The art is very 80s-90s and its super cute.

A gift for my 9 year old niece, this book is a very cute little starter guide to drawing SD (Super Deformed/Chibi) characters. It's pretty basic in its steps, though; I might recommend this for someone who already has a basic concept of sketching shape layouts.

Great drawing guide. Christopher Hart is great at what he does- teaching how to draw manga. The tracing paper between pages help with the learning process. Brilliant idea.

My daughter wanted this at Michael’s for $17.00 but I found it on amazon for cheaper when it arrived my daughter loved it it is so cool!

This is a great resource. I have both CHIBS and MANGA version and they are both full of helpful pages.

This book is fun but it is compiled slightly awkwardly. He goes over many different variations of types of chibis from hands to goths to animals; all very cute. He does a very good job explaining chibis and their construction. What I didn't like about this book was that their were conflicting skill levels. Some images required detail and an intermediate skill to draw. Then similar images were given with tracing paper. And then some more intermediate level drawings were given with their outline printed on the paper giving you a place to start. By intermediate level I mean that you have to have some drawing experience to copy the images and have them look good. The skill level this book is targeting is not clear. It is very well done and I highly recommend it but I think that Hart's first workbook was much better. I encourage beginners to get the book simply because chibis are not overwhelming, even though the pictures are more for manga artists with a little experience.

"Smiley was no material for promotion and it dawned on him gradually that he had entered middle age without ever being young, and that he was ‒ in the nicest possible way ‒ on the shelf." ‒ from CALL FOR THE DEADI've been a tremendous fan of John le Carré's George Smiley for years. How could one not be, especially after having seen the BBC's exemplary television adaptations of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People, both starring Alec Guinness?CALL FOR THE DEAD was first published in 1962 when I was but thirteen. (It's hard to believe I was ever that juvenile. I may have read the book in the intervening years, though I suspect not. But, alas, memory fails.)At this late date after Smiley has disappeared from le Carré's repertoire and Sir Alec is deceased, the chief delight for me in CALL FOR THE DEAD was learning about George's induction into the Secret Service, his early assignments recruiting and running German agents against the Nazi regime, and his marriage to Ann. Even Smiley was young once, though he apparently missed the high points.Smiley's introduction to the readers of spy fiction takes place in his world of 1961 when George, while investigating the apparent suicide of a Foreign Office official shortly after being interviewed (by George) regarding his wartime membership in the Communist Party, encounters a blast from his own wartime past.To those who've followed George's adventures over the years, it's evident in CALL FOR THE DEAD ‒ which was also the author's very first novel ‒ that the Smiley's character is in for considerable development over future years. Indeed, George must rely on the efforts of others, particularly an Inspector Mendel, to bring this case to a successful conclusion. Without Mendel, I doubt that Smiley would've pulled it off. In le Carré's later stories featuring George , especially when he's up against the Soviet master-spy controller Karla, our hero takes center stage, however low key and inscrutable in manner, and relinquishes it to no one.For readers of today's younger generations who may only be familiar with the author's most recent works and know nothing of Smiley, CALL FOR THE DEAD is the place to start. The Cold War is over, but George is timeless.

Having read almost all of the works of John Le Carre, I decided to read this, his first novel, where the character is first introduced. I felt like I was getting reacquainted with an old friend. The author's writing style was superb and worth savoring in even his first books. This was followed later in his masterful Karla trilogy with Smiley again as the principal character. Le Carre was an unknown writer at the time and did not become the famous spy thriller author until he published "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold". Critics have compared subsequent spy novelists to Le Carre but he is in a class of his own.

I've read a few of the Smiley novels over the years and generally liked them. It is a mystery to me why, now, I have embarked upon the journey of reading them all -- in order. The plot, of course, is superb, and the characters convincingly three-dimensional. Two unrelated items deserve mention:1) DO NOT skip the Preface, in which the author charmingly explains how the Smiley novels came to be. Absolutely fascinating.2) The diction and idiom are markedly more British here than in the later Smileys I've read (written with American as well as British markets in mind). Having lived in England for a year gave me a leg up, but I found myself relying upon Kindle's lookup function A LOT. It doesn't help that single words which an American "knows" can have very different meanings in England, but the average American reader will never think to look them up. Hence four stars, not five. But don't be put off! Buy it! Read it! And remember that this annoyance continues to abate throughout the later novels.

I wrote this for the other DVD of A Murder of Quality: "I can no longer recall if this is the first of the Smiley character novels by John Le Carre' or whether it is "Call for the Dead". Doesn't matter, both are great stories that get foreshadowed by the even greater story of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and the even greater production of the story by Sir Alec Guinness as Smiley in the PBS series of Tinker Tailor. Nevertheless, this is still a great story and well acted movie. Eclipsed by the other production of Smiley with Sir Alec Guinness. It'll entertain you as a thrilling story. The intellectual spy as detective. Great stuff." The questions asked for doing the review such as How would you describe the plot -- slow, some twists, full of surprises" just don't pertain to John Le Carre'. Of course it isn't James Bond and there aren't a bunch of thrilling car chases and shoot outs; This is Le Carre' --- his Smiley is an intellectual spy (turned detective for some of the early books) and still a detective in the finest sense of the word as he unravels the layered on clues that expose the truth. It isn't supposed to have action; it has enough following the seemingly minor things that put the jigsaw together. This is how you think of spies whether MI 5 or CIA doing the hard work of sifting through a lot of things to make a true picture appear.

Having enjoyed the "Smiley trilogy" (Tinker, Tailor / Honorable Schoolboy / Smiley's People) and enjoyed them immensely - Call for the Dead is a prequel of sorts that introduces you to some of the main characters earlier in their careers. If you're a le Carre fan - you will enjoy this book. If you're new to le Carre this isn't a "typical spy" thriller - it's a leisurely journey with George Smiley as he unravels the case systematically, eliminating suspects methodically. The book was written quite a while ago so some of the references may be a little hard to follow, but I think it still holds up fairly well. I enjoyed it and would recommend it. Spurred me to go back and read the trilogy and some of the newer books that I had missed.
