A really fun read, appropriate for all ages because I believe there is something in this book that will resonate with just about anyone. The author shares painful stories with wit and good humor. There were a number of laugh-out-loud moments for me. However, the lessons in the book are quite serious. It was a hard book to put down.

Good book. Great story! Fun to read. Insightful. Purchased it for my teen as required summer reading. Double bang for the buck as whether your a teen or beyond, it's a good read!

This book is marked as an "Amazon Best Seller!" It's the #1 best selling book on Amazon in its category, which is "Books > Teens > Personal Health > Physical Impairments." I don't know how many books there ARE in that category, but I'm guessing not a lot. And that really explains what I liked and didn't like about this book.This young man survived a horrifying bout of childhood cancer which resulted in one of his legs being amputated at the hip. As he explains, this is a severe physical impairment because no prosthetic device ever invented can replace the actions of three joints. Eventually the problem solved itself because his body rejected the prosthesis and he's now limited to crutches.I think the author intended his story to be both entertaining and educational and I think he succeeds. This book forces the reader to examine America's strange attitude toward the physically handicapped. On the one hand, we don't see being physically handicapped as a GOOD thing. We certainly wouldn't want to be physically handicapped ourselves or for any of our loved ones to be physically handicapped. On the other hand, we don't want to look shallow and unsympathetic.We compromise by elevating the handicapped to the status of semi-sainthood. A handicapped person is automatically a "hero" because he/she has a handicap and keeps going. (Like they have a choice?) We like to hear from the handicapped and we like to pat them on the back because it makes us feel good about ourselves. We love that we don't have to feel sorry for them because they're brave and unselfish and plucky and all the stuff that the rest of us aren't and don't want to be. Attending their motivational speeches and cheering loudly solves the problem of our ambivalent attitudes toward the "differently-abled." Then we can forget about them. We're off the hook.This intelligent, articulate young man keeps making the point that the loss of a limb doesn't really make you fundamentally any different from everyone else. And he's absolutely correct and his approach to women proves it. His love life (or lack of one) has little to do with his missing leg and everything to do with being raised by two loving, earnest, well-meaning people whose child-rearing methods left him ill-equipped to function in the modern world. In a culture where youngsters hook-up and hope that sex will lead to romance, he's feeling guilty for THINKING about kissing a girl. He's looking for a 1950's girl and he's 60 years too late.This book is quirky and some shy teens may relate to his stories of awkward attempts to find romance. Most of his stories are run-of-the-mill tales of growing up. However, the story about the time when the foot of his prosthesis turned backwards was unique. I have to admit, I never read anything quite like that one before. And he tells his stories very well.The take-away lesson is: Stop burdening this man by expecting him to be a super-hero. Stop gushing because he made a speech with jokes and he only has ONE LEG! Stop being amazed because he wrote a book and he only has ONE LEG! Do you see how silly you sound?He's a normal, shallow, self-centered young guy and he wants what every other normal, shallow, self-centered young guy wants - a babe. That's what he goes after and he's not settling for less. Hence his reaction to "Stella the Stalker."Finally a girl is interested in him. Maybe a bit TOO interested, but interested. And he tells her to get lost. He freely admits that Stella's sin is not that she's weird, but that she's ugly. If she had been one of the hot babes he covets, her stalking would have been delightful.Finally he meets a beauty queen who was also home-schooled and they walk off into the sunset. Stella wasn't his problem and I'm not unreasonable enough to think he could have made a huge difference in her life. He could have shown her some kindness, but maybe that's expecting too much of a young man. Anyway, he didn't.Just because something extraordinary (good or bad) has happened to you doesn't mean that you become an extraordinary person. You have to do that yourself. Maybe the author and his beauty queen girlfriend will marry. Maybe one of their children will be a Stella. Maybe loving an imperfect child and advocating for her and hurting when she hurts will turn him into the hero that his audiences want to believe he is now.This is a teen book and a teen would react to it far differently than I did. Still, I'm glad I read it. I didn't fall in love with the guy, but he made me think.

Self-deprecating and honest, yet giggle-out-loud (embarrassingly, at a coffee shop, in front of other people) funny, this is a very relatable book addressing the perils of dating. I highly recommend it.

This book was such a joy to read. It was clever, it made me laugh, and most importantly, Elsa and Anna were in character. I could vividly imagine this entire adventure in animated format. I can't wait to read more novels starring these two girls, especially if they're written by this same author.

I haven't even finished this book yet, and that's not by choice... I would have devoured this story in a heartbeat because it's just so GUSH WORTHY! But since I'm currently reading it in a book club, I'm forced to pace myself...I'm a giant Frozen fan and I absolutely adore Elsa and Anna! And this book is such a delight because it catches their personalities so well! Tons of funny, awkward and just too darn cute sisterly moments that had me laughing my head off and brought tears of joy to my eyes. It's a blast to read!The downside to this book is the chapters are sooo short and leave you wanting more! Also, WHY is there no physical copies available?!? I would love to have this book in my book collection. :(

This is a really sweet story that perfectly captures the vibe of the movie, and manages to nail the voices of the characters as well (a hard task when writing for kids). It's too advanced to read to my toddler, but I actually enjoyed reading it myself. Lots of good humor and witty dialogue.

My 4 year old son doesn't really care much about the story at this point. He just likes to be read to. I just didn't enjoy this story as much as others. It wasn't as much fun. But, he still loves to hear about Anna, Elsa, and Olaf.

This felt like it had a bit of a slow start to me, but I think the issue was probably due to my expectations and not the book itself. Based on pre-release buzz, I expected to be out in space on page 1, but the story doesn’t actually get there until the halfway point. All that time spent on Earth does good things for the worldbuilding and character development, so with properly set expectations (or no expectations to begin with) I suspect this won’t be an issue for others.When the story does go into space things really kick into gear. And the last 25% of the book just SINGS.Zara is a somewhat prickly protagonist and I adored her. I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the story through her POV. I love her interactions with the entire cast of characters, but especially with Nadim.Looking forward to reading the next installment!

Brilliantly written by two authors whom I never would have put together as co-authors, but somehow they made it work. Fans of the late, lamented Farscape TV show will love this take on apprentices aboard a living ship. It also reminded me of The Ship Who Sang series by Anne McCaffrey. Extremely engrossing and one of those books you can't put down. Highly recommended.

I went into this book knowing that Ann Aguirre co-authored this. I didn't need to know anything else. She hasn't written a book that I didn’t like yet.It was filled with tension. I was asking myself questions the entire way through. I found, like Zara, that I didn't trust anyone or anything that I was told. I wanted answers just like her. What's the real purpose of the program? Why was Zara picked over other candidates? Will everyone survive? It's hard to know who is telling the truth and what information is being kept from the honors as well as the public. The authors leave a trail if breadcrumbs for the reader to follow and try to piece together what is going on.I loved the concept of a sentient alien spaceship! Nadim was a character all on his own. There were times when I forgot that he was a ship because he feels and knows so much. He and Zara are alike in a lot of ways but also different from each other. He is very open with his feelings and thoughts whereas she is guarded and protects herself using sarcasm and anger as a shield. It made for an interesting dynamic between the two of them. The authors did a great job with the rest of the characters as well even though they were only side characters. I think that readers may think that they are not fleshed out enough but I thought that a certain amount of mystery surrounding their backgrounds was an appropriate decision.That cliffhanger is going to haunt me until the next book comes out next year. Overall, I have to say that this was a fantastic beginning to the series and I look forward to reading more.

I'll admit that I'm one of those readers that have mixed feelings about Rachel Caine, loved the weather warden series, and was extremely disappointed at its conclusion. Couldn't get through the Glass House series, but had to acknowledge it was well written. This first entry, I normally would have waited until there were more books to see if dipped my toes into it. But when it comes to space and sentient ships I can't help myself, the story itself is definitely full of YA tropes, does handle them rather well, and the story itself is delightful. Yes it has a rather dark third act, but even with that is just a pleasure to read.

tightly written novel with interesting female characters finding their voices in space. Are you a Theo fan (from Liaden Universe)? What about Rissa Kerguelen? You'll enjoy this.new world, new ideas, interesting challenges to solve.I'm not typically a NA/YA reader, but this is more Space Opera than it is YA. And, a good space opera is great to find.Both writers are good to read on their own. This collaboration was seamless.

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book, and there was more than one part where I felt my Good Opinion Bubble deflate a bit, but ignoring minor quibbles I feel like this is a solid and really unique read. I liked the theme of unity, and finding solidarity in each unique individual putting their abilities together to create something powerful together. It’s a good theme.Also sentient space whales. People ride in them. And there are mysteries that don’t get resolved because of course there will be other books in the series, I’m sure.It’s actually been a while between reading the book and me writing this review, but since I really did enjoy it I might as well voice that opinion.The characters are charming, even the bad ones. I can’t say there was one that really bothered me on a meta level or took the enjoyment out of the story, which is saying a lot.All in all, it’s a really fun read and worth the time and I’m excited to see what happens next! Bonus points because the setting of the story and the weirdness of the whole Space Whale concept kind of makes the book feel like one of those good ol’ classic Sci-Fi novels, and that’s something I can get behind!

The cover and the blurb grab me by the get-go. I love that Zara is an underdog. A street rat. She knows how to take care of herself. I love that in a girl. There is plenty of action and mystery to the book. The plot unfolds its self seamlessly. The alien ships took me off guard and some of the things that went on with em was a little strange. BUT overall the book was a decent read that had me guessing and holding my breath in some places. I look forward to book two.

I really liked this book and keep thinking about it. Can't wait to read the next one!! Solid characters and cool concepts. I want more of the Leviathans! The heroine Zara comes from such a hard spot and yet she's just what they need. Loved her so much!

Light and entertaining, F.U.B.A.R. Is a fun read, although I am sure that by reviewing it online I'll be, as the author's say, hunted down by "Them" at some point. It is definitely a book that is rooted in the historical context of GW's swashbuckling presidency, but the end game one this one hasn't played out yet!

Nowadays, when I'm reading a book about politics and government, I prefer the author brings laughs with his facts. The current administration -- and the right-wing media it colludes with -- is so frustrating that it's better to be able to chuckle at the absurdity of it (the only alternative is to go insane).So books like "F.U.B.A.R.," Franken's "Lying Liars" and "Sweet Jesus, I Hate Bill O'Reilly" have become a good therapy."F.U.B.A.R." displays the same hilarious, nudging sarcastic humor of those other two books. They focus on the "Rapture Right's" favorite subjects: religion, gays and sex(lessness). They also go into other, less-traveled areas, about the attempt at destroying social security, the Bush Administration's incestuous political appointees, the so-called "Clear Sky Initiative" and how the EPA was manipulated and forced to lie.This book is as funny as it is well researched. The authors never fail -- through inventive Q&As, imagined newspaper accounts, rewritten speeches, fake bestseller lists -- to perfectly expose the sad but hilarious truth about their subject.Some of the highlights in this book for me are a soft-ball questionnaire from Republicans for Supreme Court nominees that includes questions like "How awesome are you?" and an absolutely gut-busting account of Karen Hughes' trip in the Middle East, where she constantly repeats her love of being a mom as a qualification and talks to angry-to-be-seen-as-victims Middle Eastern women about the joy and privilege of driving a car. Hughes' trip and her speeches while on it are a stark example of how out of touch this administration is with their own people and seemingly all other people, too.

The book is a very quick read and is funnier than Al Franken's books. It rambles through many different subjects but the theme of this book, like so many other left-wing tomes, was clearly stated by the authors on page 41."It's no fun to realize that virtually everything the president says about something is false."This being the main line of reasoning of almost all extreme leftist you can understand that logical thinking, and clear and concise arguments are NOT going to be found in this book. This scary goose-stepping your way down the reflexive "Bush is always wrong" road brings nothing to the intellectual debate. But I can tell you from being a former left-winger that debate and free flow of ideas are anathema to the left's cause! You must be programmed to be reflexive and simply to hate the right.The book does hit some of the main talking points that the left is using.The authors demonizing of Christians and their attempt to incite the gullible readers that mainstream Christians have a large and powerful influence over the government and that the country is on the verge of a theocracy is simply farcical.I understand WHY this is done, more on that latter, but just how naive are people out there. Christianity has played less of a role in America and its government every year. Just read some of the speeches of politicians from the 1800's. These sounded more like sermons with long sections quoted out of the bible and hell-fire damnation preaching. If only the American people knew their history they would laugh out loud at this assertion.Also anti-religious groups such as the ACLU and Americans for Separation of Church and State, have used the legal system to remove crosses from graves, are challenging the constitutionality of saying Merry Christmas, the pledge is under assault because it mentions God and so is our country's motto "In God We Trust"On the opposite side of the spectrum we see how successful the Christian right has been in getting Abortion banned, making pornography illegal, instituting prayers in school, criminalizing homosexuality, etc. etc. The list could go on and on but for a group to have so MUCH power they sure are ineffectual. In fact it appears that the atheistic groups promoting their agenda seem to have the power.The real question is why does the radical left glory in demonizing Christians? Why do they have such fear and hatred of this group? One could argue that it is purely metaphysical but I think there might be other reasons. In order for the Liberal Fascist's to take over they need to have the public whipped into a frenzy about a certain group they have made out as a threat. Obviously the hard left in this country has taken note that another socialist leader in Germany was able to whip his people into a rage by demonizing the Jews. In this case the leftists have learnt a lesson from history and are replacing the Jews with the Christians. Pretty scary stuff if you enjoy individual freedom and liberty.The authors contention about social (in)security is so factually incorrect that one could write a whole book debunking them.FACT: President Bill Clinton's social security commission reported that SS is in a crisis.That it will run out of money.That it gives pathetically poor and in many cases negative rate of returns.That privatizing it JUST LIKE the government employees pensions are would create solvency AND MUCH higher returns.FACT: When President Clinton suggested privatizing SS he was considered:"smart""looking out for the working people""trying to increase returns for those who most need it.""Helping to preserve social security while making it better.""Improving on FDR's legacy"These are all quotes attributed to Bill Clinton but when George Bush continues with Clintons plans he is denounced "reflexively" by those on the left. Pathetic, absolutely pathetic.I can go on and on - cronyism, remember Bill Clinton firing all the workers in the white house travel office, some of them being there for over 20 years. Yup, no mention of that the left participates just as much as the right.And please give me a break about the media - the vast majority of it is liberal. It was liberal when I was a liberal and it is still liberal. Sam just because everything and everybody to the right of Stalin appears as a conservative to you it doesn't to the more normal and well-adjusted individuals. Give it a rest.Enough said.

Because Sam, though funny, and 99.9% of the time absolutely accurate, makes the charitable assumption that the Radical Right has only recently been acting like this. True, they've only been in charge of the GOP for about 20 years. But the far right wing of American Christians, always a minority but you wouldn't know it because of how few religious Liberals are allowed on T.V., has always been dangerous. They've alwasy complained about cartoons, they've always lied to get their way, they've always been hypocrits. These pseudo-Christians as foundign father Tom Jefferson called them have always been around, they always will be around. This book, though charitbale like I said, is an excellent tool for anyone who wants to fight them

About the Author

Clarissa Pinkola Estes was born in Indiana in 1943 to parents of Spanish and Mexican ancestry, but was later adopted by Hungarian immigrants. She received her Ph.D. from the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was certified as a Jungian analyst in 1984. She worked as a psychoanalyst in private practice and developed and taught the Writing as Liberation of the Spirit program in state and federal prisons. Estes served as executive director of the C.G. Jung Center for Education and Research and cofounded and codirected Colorado Authors for Gay and Lesbian Equal Rights. One of Estes's better-known writings, Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype (1992), is drawn from tales and myths she heard firsthand from members of such cultures as Asian, Mexican, African, and Greek. This wonderful book defies any simple review. Its difficult to confine to any summary or set of words other than the author's own. It is broad, deep, elegantly simple at times and then profoundly complex all on the same page. A totally different experience, ever richer, unpacks on each encounter I've had so far. Its heart-breaking, heart-mending and heart-opening.So...Instead it makes more sense to me to speak about what happens when one meets the book, encounters the author's voice, and through her enters the presence of the Strong Woman she so passionately introduces now to the rest of the world. Regardless of our faith or lack thereof, our gender, our culture, or our political creed.I started to preorder this weeks ago out of curiousity, but largely skeptical. Discussion of the mother archetype and such religious themes carries echos of familiarity from either my upbringing or academic past. Some have been decidedly not pleasant. And for the most part I would say I'm not very comfortable "believing" in them -- particularly if I sense persuasive efforts to press me into cooperation with a view held by one particular organized or institutionalized version. My preferred entrance into the spiritual, sacred, or holy is more easily recognized in the nonverbal world of nature. Nonetheless, I have greatly enjoyed and benefited from several other works from Dr. Estes. These convinced me that her newest book, UnTie the Strong Woman, might be quite different than my expectations. Indeed, it is not like any other book I have ever encountered.In brief, because there is so much for each person to individually discover on their own, and not wishing to spoil any secrets I will just say that I was awe-struck by the following:1. This book and its message radiates beauty. From cover to cover. Not just the dust jacket. But a collection of beautiful color images generously dispersed throughout the book that clearly amplifies the stories, the intention, the quality, and wisdom that the author has refined over years in order to communicate her passionate love for Our Lady, Blessed Mother, the Source with many names.2. The hope and realness that permeates shared portions of Dr. Este's personal journey, revealed more here than I've seen in previous books. And even more ... the genuine respect, compassion and love she passes along to her readers. I've not found any boasting -- but instead a quiet, persistent, incredibly skilled poetic manner in which she gives flesh and blood to her conviction that the Blessed Mother loves the Wild Soul in all beings.3. It has a unique design and quality that meets me where I am at the moment and expands tenderly to reach my soul. It doesn't have to be read cover to cover. More like interacting with the Dao De Jing or creating a sand-tray. A story that fits is often right where it falls open, as if it calls.I'll want to visit over and over. Am thinking this is a text to be treasured the rest of my lifetime. I feel no coercion. Refreshing, even when it reaches to the dirt, grit and blood of life and death -- lending meaning and greater purpose to some of humanities darkest hours and its most joyous celebrations. Though in my younger years certain words/phrases used to flow easily from my mouth, too easily, too empty and too trained so that I rarely am comfortable uttering them now ... this is one occasion in which they feel required. Hence, while reading this book I feel I am indeed "Standing on Holy Ground", experiencing sacred cries and community across centuries and cultures. UnTie the Strong Woman -- it is a Gift to us, to me. One I know I will be sharing.________________The preceding review is for the printed hardcover book. The CD audiobook is clearly and closely related, but in my view a work all its own, with some important gifts and differences from the printed text. It is NOT simply a recording of the author reading her book page after page. I find substantial value in the character and art work of both. Unfortunately, Amazon is organized in such a way that we cannot enter separate reviews for both works. Thus, for those interested, please look under comments for information about the CD collection.

I was extremely disappointed because I wanted to learn more about the beauty and power of the Sacred Feminine. Instead, the author goes on and on about conquerors and Holy Mother being wiped out. Here is just one passage:”In my own family, the invaders set strong horrific images into the hearts and minds of the farmer people they overran. The invaders’ ultimate destructions of the sacred left the beautiful bond between spirit and holy, soul and psyche in shreds...”. In many chapters, the author keeps bringing this concept up to a reader who has no power to go back to the past and change the actions of sinful humanity. It left me feeling helpless and sad for the conquered people, not uplifted or empowered. Also, Sacred Feminine power is expressed in more ways than just motherhood. Even the mother of Jesus (who reflects God’s Sacred Feminine image) has many titles. She is also known as Queen of all Saints and Seat of Wisdom to name just two examples. I guess the author just wanted to focus on the one title of Mother, but it was disappointing.

If there were a higher rating, I would have chosen it. I bought this second copy for a young male friend. Clarissa is THE voice for leading world citizens out of a pathological, macho male, destructive world society into the only possible future for humanity to survive. Our boys and girls do not have to be taught to hate and kill so the conquerors can keep spreading. Nation after nation being turned into slaves.The Blessed Mother was co-opted by institutions and turned into a meek, submissive woman. Clarissa reintroduces us to the Strong Woman who has as many names as cultures that have remembered the archetype of mother means to gather, nourish, protect her children. I prayed with many images of "The Mother at the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. Our Lady of Guadalupe who spoke to Juan Diego and Las Sedas, the maize mother, who protects victims of wars and conquest, speak the loudest to me today. In this time, when our dreamers are being arrested, tortured and murdered, she will gather the survivors. They will arise, stand up, go forth and love life back into being. We can imagine a future with peace.Today as I write this, peoples are celebrating the birth of Light into the Roman Empire. He was the one who would lead the people back into living life together as a human family. And his mother had to say yes. Yes, Untie the Strong Woman. Bind up the strong man. Lead us to Peace. And remember, men are responding to the call to love. Love is not a "woman's thing." Men can cry and pick up the victims of tyranny.

This set of discs is amazing. It is many things: a wonderful collection of stories from different cultures; an exposition on the archetype of the Mother; and a courageous work of love for and explanation about the Blessed Mother as revered in the Catholic faith. Many times, I believe, those raised as Catholics may find the doctrine of the Blessed Mother too "hot" to touch psychologically. If you are one of these, this set of discs will re-introduce you to the sacred and loving aspect that the traditional training may have lost. But this work is not only for Catholics; it is for all human beings. It will help you feel safe, and brings with it, as do all Clarissa Pinkola Estes' works, a sense of being enveloped in love. It helps us to explain, accept, and relate to one of the most basic and important of archetypes in the human experience. I bought this book after a moderately good experience with the Praise Hits 1A book. However, I found my experience with this book much less satisfactory. Both books are leveled to match where you are in the Alfred books, but this one had poor arrangements. Both books have an adult accompaniment, but while the 1A version sounded like the actual song you were supposed to be playing without the accompaniment, this one sounds like the accompaniment to the accompaniment.

This book has fun songs in it, but they are cut very short and when played don't actually sound like the real song you could sing along with.

Bought this for my son for Christmas. I love songs in the book. I am sure my kiddo will love it as well. Good price for a good book!

This is exactly what the piano teacher asked for and much cheaper online than trying to go from store to store looking for it.

Would highly recommend. I've been looking for beginner books as I begin to learn to play piano, and this was a nice way to get to play some pop music while learning the basic skills.
