As an analyst who has been covering the luxury industry for the past six years, I have developed the highest respect for Erwan Ranbourg's expertise, well-reflected in this engaging book. From the rise of the aspirational consumer, to the effects of rising Chinese tourism, to the more recent Korean Wave, Rambourg hits all the major trends with well chosen examples. Underlying the short term ripples is the large demographic shift of Chinese citizens entering the middle class, brand-aware and social-media-savvy. Good summaries are at the end of each chapter, helpful if one wants to cite a point in a discussion!Highly recommended!

This book is a dynamic exploration of what China's consumer landscape is today. Interesting, colorful, and informative, Rambourg has found a way of communicating a business message using a voice that is compelling for the reader, regardless of their level of expertise. I loved how he delved deep into history and motivations of the Chinese consumer- unwrapping a cultural background that is so vastly different from the Western shopper, and so crucial to understand for any luxury retailer. As a business leader for a global luxury goods company, I found this book to be very impressive and have strongly recommended it to both senior leadership and retail arms of my company.

You don't have to be interested in China to want to read this book. You only need to be curious a bit about the past and/or especially the future. China's luxury consumers have played a role in each.

Ewan has written the ultimate guide for anyone interested in understanding, not only the luxury market and trends in China, but also the impact and influence of other regions in Asia. I also find insightful his views and analysis of the real global trends in luxury affecting all parts of the world - developed and emerging. His style is accessible and approachable, and should be read by all interested in the luxury market.

A new Silk Road runs from west to east. For the past decade, luxury companies have rushed to cash in on China’s boom. But Erwan Rambourg’s prediction of the reign of Chinese shoppers is starting to look shaky just a few months after his “Bling Dynasty” hit bookshops.Rambourg, an HSBC analyst, is bullish about the country’s prospects despite what he calls near-term challenges. He says the sector is undergoing “a once-in-a-generation transformation; no other nationality will influence luxury consumption as much as the Chinese in our lifetime.”The United States was the top market for luxury in 2014 with 65 billion euros in sales, Bain & Co research shows. Japan was in the second spot, followed by Italy and France. China was fifth, with 15 billion euros of sales. But the ranking is deceptive as Chinese consumers shop abroad to avoid domestic taxes. They account for 29 percent of all global personal luxury sales and are propping up the market in Europe and the United States.Rambourg says the bulk of future growth will occur mechanically. Over the next 10 years, he predicts that the number of luxury consumers in the People’s Republic – broadly, anyone who earns more than $30,000 a year - will double from 75 million to 150 million, while spending should triple. In this scenario, the Chinese will dominate the global luxury industry.On paper, the figures back him up. China had 213 billionaires on the 2015 Forbes Billionaires List, second only to the United States. The exploding middle class points to a consumption bonanza.But the reality has become more complex since the book was published in October. Sales growth of luxury goods in mainland China turned negative for the first time in 2014, Bain research shows.Contrast this with Bain’s 2011 forecast for 30 percent sector growth and it’s clear just how much this former star market has dimmed. China’s 2014 GDP expansion of 7.4 percent was the country’s weakest since 1980 and spending by the super-wealthy on gift giving has fallen by a quarter.Luxury executives point to factors like China’s anti-corruption crackdown, which has made government officials reluctant to display ostentatious wealth. But certain brands have been unscathed, suggesting other factors are also at work.Ultra high-end labels like Hermes and Brunello Cucinelli are still seeing relatively strong sales. Meanwhile, “mega” brands that pursued breakneck expansion are faring less well. Prada pinned huge hopes on the Chinese market when it chose to list in Hong Kong rather than Italy in 2011. That bet has not come good yet. The Italian company’s sales in Greater China declined 7 percent in 2014. LVMH also reported negative sales in the region as Chinese consumers cooled towards flashier labels like its flagship Louis Vuitton brand.Contrast this with LVMH’s performance in the United States where annual revenue jumped 8 percent. The United States is surprisingly underpenetrated, accounting for a quarter of global GDP but only 15 percent of luxury consumption.Meanwhile, handbags and jewellery are facing increasing competition from high-end consumer electronics. The Hurun Research Institute’s latest report shows that Apple products became the luxury gift of choice in 2014, displacing Hermes which slipped to seventh place. Samsung also entered the top ten. Rambourg recognises this trend and says brands should be thinking more about “budget competition” from aspirational luxury labels and tech companies.He also makes a brief reference to how the country’s political history has shaped its luxury consumption. More detail about this fascinating topic would have given deeper insight than can be gleaned from cold data. After decades of Communist Party rule, how is the country figuring out what denotes status? How does this help explain volatile demand for western luxury goods that has at times flummoxed non-Chinese executives?The author doesn’t see Western luxury brands facing much local competition any time soon. For now, the “Made in China” label faces the biggest prejudice from Chinese consumers themselves. The Cultural Revolution undermined a history of refinement and craftsmanship, and domestic production is dominated by a mindset that meets expectations at low cost.But Rambourg could be underestimating a market that has evolved at breakneck speed. The country’s art sector already shows a nationalistic streak, with Chinese collectors preferring ancient calligraphy and native artifacts.There is no doubt that China will be a key market for luxury goods. After years of schlepping 30+lbs of photogear, it took another few years before I could decide how to enter the digital world. I downsized to the Sony RX10 IV but I had no idea how bewildering Sony's menus and submenus could be! After a few months of trying to find photo buddies here in my hometown who could help, including a really wasted and expensive 3 hrs of private "tutoring" from the large photo store, I turned to Amazon. After all, I learned how to use my old NIkons via instructional books, maybe there'll be something like that for this Sony. AND THERE IS!! The author writes clearly, systematically and gives plenty of photographic examples. If you buy the book, you also get the digital version so you can read it on your Kindle or on your smartphone via the Kindle app. So I don't get overwhelmed, I just cover a few pages at a time. I'll go to a local venue like the art museum, sit down with the book and follow each page's directions. Read, snap, read, snap. There are plenty of items that need more explanations and Mr White will tell you that they will be covered in "Chapter....".

Another fantastic explanation of the functions of a complex camera. I have owned an Alexander White book for each of my last 4 cameras, and he can explain in a lucid manner each setting, how it works, and how it interacts with other settings.It is a big book--269 8.5x11in pages of text and illustrations in a very readable font. In the past, I read his books for the M1 and M3 (and also the similar RX100M3), but I still read this book from cover to cover, making notes.In addition to learning about the camera, the book also serves as an excellent reference, thanks to a detailed index, as well as electronic versions of his book.

Simply Said, "You buy the RX10.4, you buy this manual. Period. It is just a fabulous resource from an author who really knows how to help you with the "how to?" questions. When I purchased 5-6 years ago Mr. Whites manual for the RX100, the detail and logic was very clear. With the manual for the RX10.4, Mr. White is clear, logical and offers wonderful "screen shots", to clarify his material. This camera is very sophisticated and has many sub menus. With the author's expertise, I had a confidence just knowing the "answer was there", which then led to progressing quickly into shooting and not spending a lot of time trying to figure it out. Another note to you. The manual is very extensive and with the screenshots is a must. However, ABSOLUTELY download the digital copy to whatever device you take when you shoot. A couple of months ago, I was in a National Park at night, with a group of photographers, I had a glitch (nothing serious)...I just didn't know how to "un-glitch the camera". So I had to trudge back to the car (not close), at night and pull out the physical manual to find the solution and quickly unglitched my Sony. Then I had to trudge back and readjust to the night. The digital version would have saved time and I could have used "find" to locate my issue faster. YES, I did purchase and download the next day I was home. So, stop reading this and just purchase it. You will be glad for doing so. Thanks

If you own this camera, the guide is a "must have". It's not the most exciting read, but it's critical for understanding all of the nuances of the camera. Mr. White is systematic in his description and even includes his own favorite settings which I really appreciate. The Index is extensive, thus one can go back and re-discover information as new issues surface or re-surface.

Wish I could give this instruction manual more than 5 stars. I have been into photography for almost 40 years now. Have shot a great amount of weddings, pets, family reunions and at one time was shooting next to Sports Illustrated photographers at one of the triple crown races in Kentucky. I did not want to take all of my DSLR equipment all of the time when my wife and I went someplace. I read about Sony RX10iv in outdoor photography and did a ton of research on bridge cameras. I decided to purchase the RX10iv and because of the price chose to buy off of ebay. Since the small instruction pamphlet that comes with the camera is useless I chose to purchase an aftermarket book. There is a manual from Sony but you would have to print over 130 pages or use a computer all of the time. When I saw this manual and a picture of the author I went back to ebay and found his picture on the same camera that I purchased. The camera was like brand new. I read all of the reviews on this manual and all were positive. One reviewer gave a negative commented on the paper quality. I have no idea what he was talking about. The pages are just fine. Others said that the book was almost too detailed. My take is Mr. White wrote this for anyone starting out in photography. He explains everything very well. The book is paperback and is 8 1/2 X 11 inches. There are over 250 pages of instructions. He explains in detail all of the features in this camera. Best written instruction manual I have ever seen. Well worth the $30.00.

This book is essential for anyone who ones this camera. Sony bills this camera as the most advanced camera - that may be true, but it is certainly the most complicated. This book explains every function and setting in a clear and concise matter. This book is well written and will allow you to get the most out of the camera, whether you are new to photography or a seasoned veteran. I have used Canon professional quality SLRs for years, but I needed this book to decipher the settings (one setting can make another setting inoperative). I would not consider buying this camera without also buying the book.

I discovered that one of my very favorite lang. arts students years later upon hiigh school grad. had become interested in the diesel engines and restoring the engines, etc. while he attened college as well. I found a couple of books, this guide being one, and was told by his dad that I had made an excellent choice. If one has the talent in this area, I would highly suggest it. After looking at the complicated diagrams that were very explanatory, I realized that I had chosen the best career as lang. arts teacher and not engine builder/restorer. It is wonderful that we have talented people that can read a guide like this and understand!!!I was very impressed. Very good manual!!

If you are wanting to learn very in depth details about the building and performance of Diesel engines this book is amazing not for the faint of heart this is the serious stuff. Not an easy read lots of info and numbers about the mathematics of engine function.

Although I have been a hot rodder for years high performance diesel are new to me and this book is a great introduction. Joe Pettitt's book is full of knowledge including the history of diesel engines but when I finished something felt missing. When I look through the book I noticed there were no step by step projects. I enjoy articles on selecting parts, building an engine, throw it on the dyno, tuning it and trying it out on the street or track. This book had none.This book was published in 2007 but diesel technology is advancing quickly especially with multiple turbos so it's about time for a new edition. Overall the book is one of best in an uncrowded arena.

I grew up in a cult. A real cult. Most people don't realize it is one, and I don't like to talk about it. I never do. But I grew up being brainwashed and indoctrinated. Believe this... Think that... These people are evil... I always knew deep down that something was off, REALLY off, but when things are whispered in your ear from the time you are a child, and they are the only things that are whispered year after year, who asks questions? Not me! In fact, the first time my "religion" was attacked I ignored it. Almost 10 years later it was attacked again, and that time it caused tremendous upheaval. I sat there listening to it, knowing, absolutely, that it was true, but denying it anyway.It really is amazing what the human mind will go through...the extents to which it reaches...to protect itself from fear, doubt, and insecurity. By that point, I was even deeply bitter about my religion, and had been inactive for years, and yet I still denied all of it.It took me months to come around. Months of the words running through my mind again and again. Months before I admitted to myself what I'd always known. That all of it was a load of trash. That was years ago, and I'm still not over it. This really isn't the appropriate time or place, but on my blog I recently reviewed a book called Panorama that nearly had me raving from a few stray sentences about my aforementioned cult. So trust me, I get it! The truth about what you've been indoctrinated with is hard to face, and nobody wants to do it, not even me.But I also happen to know that the happiest years of my life have been the years since I was finally forced to figure out for myself what I believe, what I want, and where I want to go. This book was incredibly, PROFOUNDLY accurate. It isn't an easy read, and the concepts will likely make many people balk. However, that means little to how critical the information is, and how much it could change the entire trajectory of a life.

I think this is a great resource for those looking to develop a systematic approach to life, rather than merely taking what comes to them.

Too many people float through life, not knowing who they are or what they want, and without any action to try make something of their life. In this book I was introduced to the concepts of objective function, ideologies, and standards of evidence. I see how they can be used to understand what a person believes and why they might believe it. Although, I believe there may be some danger in tearing apart your current ideologies, to examine them, I feel the last half of the book that concentrates on changing who you are and changing your self-concepts so that you can be the best you for performing your objective function can be very useful.

I found the discussion of the different types of friendships, in Step 4, to be especially helpful. I'm so impressed with this book that I ordered 5 additional copies as gifts to my children and significant other. I highly recommend the book!

This book explores all these topics and more. A must read for anyone who wants to understand who they are and better yet, who they want to be.

If you are ready to get real with yourself and answer some tough questions.... this book delivers. Shouldn’t we all take the time to ask ourselves, what we really believe and why? And then, be willing to change our minds once new information is presented. I especially appreciate that this book presents both sides to the arguments, and then let’s you decide. Let’s not go about life blindly following the person in front of us. It is time for us all to think for ourselves, decide who we are, what we stand for and then intentionally present our voices to the world. This book inspires you to do just that.

Andrew, Peter and Kate have put out such a beautiful second edition with this cookbook. It's filled with such beautiful imagery and words, and really invokes the cozy overcast vibes that the PNW offers. It's such a great resource for cooking inspiration and doesn't limit you to following exact recipes. I'll flip through it just to get ideas, pick a recipe and usually heavily alter it to fit whatever I have at hand that's in season. That's one of the best things about this cookbook. If you're wanting to follow a recipe exactly, you certainly can, but if you're the type of home cook that will improvise, this book will suit you really well.Also, it had to be said, it's a lovely object. Would make a wonderful gift for someone who appreciates seasonal cooking and comforting unassuming food.

This is truly an amazing cookbook! I must admit I'm ever so slightly biased, being from Portland and all. But aside from the culinary nostalgia, this cookbook has already earned a place on my kitchen shelf (as opposed to most of my collection, which is housed in the library). The Myrtlewood Cookbook is full of inspiring recipes and gorgeous photos. This is the type of cookbook that urges you to branch out, change things up a bit, and to cook for the pure enjoyment of cooking and eating. The directions are low key, and the tone is warm and easy going. The recipes are mostly vegetarian, along with some seafood recipes and mention here or there of fowl. Andrew has created a whole new kind of cookbook here. Buy it - you won't regret it!

Typically, when I buy a cook book, no matter the cuisine or level of difficulty I end up going with the one filled with pictures that make me want to get home and make something new and delicious. It's always a bonus if the recipes are easy to follow but as someone who enjoys cooking and does their fair share of it I don't mind if things get a little tricky. Myrtlewood meets all of my cook book criteria. It's filled with beautiful photography of amazing looking food and a wide variety of ingredients. The recipes are easy to follow with little tips, stories and side notes for the reader making it all the more enjoyable to use. Myrtlewood is a book that will inspire any cook to create something yummy with fresh local ingredients.

This thoughtful, and elegantly presented cookbook is the perfect addition to the bookshelf of any seasoned home cook as well as those who wish to take their culinary skills to the next level. Creative and comforting recipes abound as well as a well-considered list of kitchen and pantry essentials, which in my opinion, is indispensable. The photography is stunning and instantly transports you to the Pacific Northwest. Many cookbooks try to do too much, to appeal to everyone, and this one feels especially bound to the time and place in which it was crafted. Do yourself a favor, and allow yourself to be immersed in this delicious world.

I love to flip through this beautiful cookbook whenever I need inspiration for a simple cozy meal. The photography is truly inviting and makes me appreciate the rainy Portland winters. Looking forward to sharing this little taste of the Northwest with my friends and family. The new edition is a great size and is really great to handle, not clunky or heavy and with a soft but sturdy cover - I think it will make an excellent gift for the holidays.

What a terrific conclusion to a very enjoyable trilogy! If you have read the first two books, you already know the quality of Sanderson's writing and this book is no exception. Sanderson not only more completely fleshes out some aspects of the first two magic systems he created for this world, but also casually drops in a third system which you realize has been present all along.The story picks up two years after in last book and the characters have undergone some changes though at heart they are obviously the same. Some characters, like Spook, gain in importance and personality and, as May be expected, others are dealing with their emotional reactions to the trials they have been through to this point. This may be Sanderson's greatest strength as story-teller... his characters actually CARE that they are going through unusual circumstances and it actually affects their personalities and emotions. There is no blithely murdering tens or hundreds of individuals and grabbing a beer to wash down the blood.

Wow. I won't spoil the book for anyone but the ending surprised me. The ending is sad and lovely, dark and hopeful. Because most readers will have read the first two books, I won't give a general synopsis. Sanderson does a masterful job building his world. He deepens the personality of some characters and expands the role of others. Excellent book.Someone mentioned thinking Sazed's spiritual crisis made the character seem a bit whiny. I don't share that opinion. I loved the depiction of doubt. As someone who struggled with both faith and nonfaith, I appreciated much of Sazed's thought process toward religion. I loved the Terrisman but maybe I am biased because of my own love/hate toward religion.

In this book the pleasure lies not so much in politics as in the previous book, but in the evolution of the world and its races, and the explanation of how these creatures emerged.Unlike Starwars, for example, in which we have the fiasco of Midclorians, Sanderson delightfully and plausibly explains how the races were created, their purpose and the very evolution of the character of the Lord Ruler, his thoughts when building the world in that form. What is weird at the beginning, starts to make sense, and we begin to feel empathy even to the most terrible characters.My step behind is perhaps to the character Sazed , which has many dull conversations to himself that tend to a tiresome self-pity, but is part of the evolution of the character. One cannot love everyone. It is a feature that I hate on characters, but it is a personality trait that exists and needs to be described.Great book. Five stars. Brandon Sanderson has created a world, and characters to fill it, that are so vivid they almost seem more real than the real world. The way he unfolds the mysteries that started at the very beginning of the trilogy is astounding and gripping. I came away from the closing chapter feeling fulfilled, hopeful, and inspired. Even though it was fiction, I feel more complete having read the Mistborn trilogy and look forward to delving into his next Mistborn novel.

All 3 books in this trilogy are very good. I was introduced to Brandon Sanderson from the work he did finishing off Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Anyway, after reading the first book in this trilogy I thought... not bad, but not as good as his work in WOT. By then end of the third book I was really impressed and he showed the depth that he showed in finishing Jordan's story. Highly recommended.

This was an amazing trilogy. Each book was it's own piece, yet each book built upon the one before it. We learned more about the characters and the world around them. There were unexpected revelations. The characters grew and changed and went through experiences both wonderful and horrible. Not to mention the worldbuilding is amazing and the powers these characters wield and the battles they fight make great visualizations in your head that would make for a great movie series. I highly recommend.
