Kate is a trauma nurse who wakes up in hospital from a coma after a bad accident. Her own nurse soon dies right as she is tending to Kate. This begins a series of deaths of people who are associated with the hospital.Kate is a dedicated nurse who fights for her patients and tries to do what is best for them. It seems the hospital is trying to save money more than do the best for each patient. She clashes with the administration for this, and begins to clash with the new golden boy doctor on staff, a gynecologist who she feels treats his patients roughly and is a social climber.As more staff die the murderer manages to put the suspicion on Kate. She is put in the position of having to get the police on the case to believe her and try to convince them of the identity of the real killer.This is a very suspenseful book. I have read several other books by Eileen Dreyer and often don't figure out the killer until she springs that on us at the end of the book. I did figure out the killer earlier in this book but that didn't lesson the suspense.
I have mixed feelings about this book. The writing in general is good and some of the main characters had more depth than expected. The idea of the story was interesting and all its elements were well thought out in terms of how they would fit in the story. I really liked some of the characters and especially the emotional scenes and parts of the story were very well handled, it made me 'feel' for those characters. That was the redeeming quality of this book and what has kept me reading it until the end, after putting it down many times (which only happens to me when the story is boring or frustrating).However one of the big problems of this book is that its story is too long. Even though the elements I mentioned were well thought out, they were brought in at a frustratingly long pace.I am surprised to see other reviewers saying that they haven't figured out "who done it" until the end. I looked at my Kindle at the exact moment when it became clear to me who was the main culprit and it was at 48% of the story. I actually couldn't believe that there was still more than half of the story to come, and I kept hoping that maybe I was wrong and there was a twist at the end. Alas, there wasn't anything wrong with my guessing of the culprit. As for a twist, well, there was a twist (which was a good and a bad one at the same time, in terms of how it was handled in the story), but it didn't really work very well in terms of what it wanted to get out of the readers.Whenever the 'bad guy' appears clearly so early on in the story , I get really frustrated with the characters for being so blind and obtuse, even though the clues are thrust at them quite clearly, left and right. I mean, I understand why characters that are "in the middle of it" could have some selective blindness in specific cases (this one being one of those cases), however as a reader this is a moment when I get jarred right out of the story. It starts to get annoying and tedious to go through more than half of the story in disbelief as to how much it can be dragged out until the characters finally realize what is going on.Plus, the authorities who should do all the figuring out (and by the way, in this story they are no more than cardboard characters) are totally incompetent at their job and ignore all basic elements and clues from their crime scenes, so that the story's "Nancy Drew" can finally see what should have been clear a long time ago and solves the whole thing (Many times I was thinking: "Seriously, and this doesn't tell you anything?"). Extremely unrealistic, along with a lot of other instances in this story, which is one other thing which made me very reluctant in finishing this book.Here, some readers might say that the main character couldn't have figured it out because of things that were 'missing' (I won't say more than that, to not spoil the storyline for those who have not yet read the book). To that - however- I say that knowing what was missing was irrelevant to figuring out the culprit, because that one could have been done from the vast amount of clues available (I mean I figured out who it was before half the story was done, without knowing what was missing). It wasn't actually necessary for that, it was only necessary to give the back story and the ultimate reasoning for the culprit's actions as more of a closure to the main character's problems.Overall it wasn't a bad reading experience and like I said, I really liked a few of the characters, but ultimately it felt rather flat. One more thing that I forgot to mention and that is notable here is that some characters are written to be "liked" by the readers, but end up being only irritating and dragging the story a few more pages along. Frustrating.
The story opens with trauma nurse Kate waking up in a drug-induced haze after nearly dying in a terrible accident she can't even remember. Unable to move, hooked to a bunch of IVs, and being force-fed oxygen with a respirator, she grows helplessly infuriated at the way some of the nurses are treating her. Then, as she slowly recovers, some of those less-than-loved hospital employees start turning up dead, and Kate is the prime murder suspect. Determined to regain control of her life, she works with investigators to find the real killer before she's laid out in the morgue, too.That's the basics of the story, but it's so much more than that. The author beautifully captures the hospital atmosphere and how and why some people love working there. The characters, relationships, and drama are all right on. She also does a good job describing the change in focus from patient care to profits, making me very glad I wasn't still working in a hospital when those changes took place. The mystery? Terrific and at times, thrilling. And there's even romance. A really good deep-down caring kinda love.What can I say? I loved this book. If I could give it more than five stars, I would.
When you are a nurse, and you wake up from a coma to find another nurse disrespecting you, how can you not take it personally? Did you really kill her, or was her death part of a bigger picture? The main character, a trauma nurse, herself, finds lots of people in the hospital to disrespect. Do they deserve it? Are they killers? The deaths don't stop, and while she is trying to remember the incidents leading up to the death of a child and her own near-death, it looks like someone does not want her to remember. I am a nurse, and I enjoy most of Ms. Dreyer's medical thrillers, but this one came down kind of hard on the Administration vs Staff relationship. Maybe I have just been isolated. But I did enjoy the book; it was quite the page turner, waiting for the climax, which was just a little slow in coming.
Staff of a big general hospital may enjoy this book but for me it was just plain boring.The book is far too long.Members of hospital staff start getting murdered and the main character, Kate an ER nurse, gets roped in to help the police for some weird reason.Dreyer attempts to be amusing but that falls flat. It is difficult to keep track of who is who among the multitude of characters and when one has been roused from nodding off, one has to then attempt to piece together the rather vague plot.
Wow, kept me on edge and guessing! There were several times where it seemed to be wrapping up, but it was only wrapping up one minor part of it, and there were so many different aspects that needed to fall into place in order to complete the picture! I liked the way the author tied off individual points one at a time, but the main character kept not being satisfied every time I felt that there was something missing! I appreciate the way the story was not left questions hanging! Great book!!
