I was excited by all the reviews that said this book was for "athletes" and had a lot of information on how to continue exercising and strength training exercises you could do. I read through the first trimester chapter and came out knowing nothing more than when I went in.I am a fitness enthusiast, I used to do a lot of weight lifting, in the past two years I had given a lot of that up and have instead been running half marathons. I was hoping the book would have better advice for me than "go ahead and exercise.... but don't overdo it.... and don't feel bad if you don't want to exercise at all". What to Expect When You're Expecting told me that! I was looking for something a bit more in depth and specific! There were maybe 4 exercises for first trimester moms-to-be, all involving resistance bands, which seems to indicate that they're for beginners who've never actually lifted free weights. I have a gym membership-- I'd like to know if I can still lift weights, and if there are positions that I should be avoiding or things I should be doing more of. I'm pretty sure I should be working to strengthen my core for pushing out a baby (my core is noticeably weak from focusing on training for the half marathons and not lifting weights at the same time).The advice it gave was vague and unsatisfactory, and useless at putting my mind at ease. And if you've already had a miscarriage, all bets are off. The book basically absolves itself from giving you any solid advice, and tells you to go ask your OBGYN. My miscarriage was not caused by my exercise habits, but I am, understandably, a little paranoid this time around.Not the book for me, maybe not the book for other experienced exercisers, either!

I conducted my research before I bought this book and I was excited to find something that could support my current activity level through pregnancy. I have been going to a boxing/fighting gym for 6+ years (classes 3 days/week) and weight training on the other two days for 2 years. This book only addresses runners, cyclists and swimmers. If you do not mainly participate in these activities, I wouldn't recommend this book at all.There is a lot of conflicting information about what one should or shouldn't do when pregnant in regards to exercise. I believe this absolutely depends on your fitness level prior to the BFP. I was disappointed to learn more about round ligament stretching online and it's total absence from this book. Also, I am aware of not lying on my back in the 2nd trimester, but how else can I keep my core and lower back strong? Where are these exercises?I wish I could recommend another book, but honestly I'm still searching for information that fits my situation.

I worked out most of my pregnancy with my doctors permission, but I wanted to learn about the science behind working out while expecting. This book is a great education tool without being boring. Same thing after delivering and getting back to training. The author offers advice on how to ease back into a routine and doesn't put pressure on the reader. I also liked the motivating stories from other moms in the same situation. Why only four stars? The book only covers running, swimming and cycling. I'm an indoor cycle instructor, but I do many other forms of cardio along with weight training. The author didn't go into depth about resistance training during pregnancy and after. Also, the diagrams showing how to do certain moves need work, but over all, a solid book!

As women, we have been presented historically with SO much inaccurate information regarding exercising when trying to conceive and when we are pregnant. Not only did this book back up the claims that exercising is safe (and encouraged!!) throughout your ENTIRE pregnancy, but it provides tons of medical facts about what is happening with your body (why your heart rate changes, what's going on with your ligaments, how your kidneys change and therefore make you pee more). I learned more than exercising-I learned about physiology and chemistry of our bodies.The anecdotes from athletic women, while anecdotes, were extremely helpful.Also, this book didn't make me feel guilty, reminding you to "read you body cues" and explaining how tough the first trimester can be, so just hang in there.This book was more helpful to me than the old "pregnancy standby" books- you know which I mean!! I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants support in staying fit throughout their pregnancy.

Great book. I bought this for my wife so she would know what she was still allowed to do in terms of exercise during her pregnancyso she could maintain some level of fitness. Before you judge me, she asked for the book, I didn't give it to her as a suggestion. The bik is well laid out. It is organized by trimesters. Showing exercises that are acceptable for each. It uses descriptions and pictures. She really like it. It's very informative.

I like the nutrition advice, exercises, and the advice on what's safe or normal symptoms when running while pregnant. This book is for runners (I'm a marathon runner) so if you don't run already I would recommend a different book for your pregnancy workouts.

It's a light read, not as in-depth as I thought it might be. But it was often motivating for me to get out on move. I didn't like the kindle edition because it displayed some of the charts too small to read. If you're not a tri-athlete, You may find some of the specifics on the other sports cumbersome. I'm a runner, and I think the book mostly spoke to that sport.

I just received this Bible as a wedding gift and I LOVE it!I have owned and read a number of different Bibles over the years (a whole shelf of my bookcase is dedicated to Bibles), many of them study Bibles, and I am very thankful for their value as study tools (my favorite so far has been the ESV Study Bible). The ability to have commentary at your fingertips can be really useful and clarifying.However, all of that commentary can also be distracting. I often find myself chasing so many rabbit trails in the footnotes that I lose the big picture of the actual *story* that I'm reading. That's where the ESV Reader's Bible comes in.It is obviously designed to read like a novel instead of an encyclopedia, and it succeeds. When my copy arrived in the mail, even though I knew it was coming I didn't recognize the box at first because it is smaller than any other Bible I've bought (except for those crazy small pocket Bibles). The size is on par with classic hardback novels, and about as thick. The Bible comes in a nice box sleeve (reminds me of a Lord of the Rings box set my parents owned) and looks really nice (I have the "cloth over board" hardcover version).Inside, the Bible is super readable - again, similar to a novel. Front matter is kept to a minimum, and there are no references at the back except for 4 maps (2 pages front and back) printed in tastefully subdued colors. Everything else is just the text of scripture, with no annotations or footnotes except for very discrete chapter numbers alongside the text, plus a "chapter and verse range" printed at the top of each page, and a page number at the bottom of each page. These reference numbers are all printed in a muted red font to let the black font of scripture be the reader's main focus.I have had the Bible for less than a week, yet already I've found myself feeling more engaged in the stories and picking up on nuances that I must have missed before. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the ESV translation feels more "natural" to read in this format (I have always struggled with the ESV feeling more cumbersome than the old NIV that I grew up on). Now it is easier for me to get lost in a story and forget about which chapter I am in.The quality of construction is also excellent and I get the impression that this book will last me a long time. It is not gaudy (no gold leafing on the edges of the pages), just very well made.Bottom line: This well-produced Bible is now my go-to choice for devotional reading, and would also be an excellent choice for giving to friends, whether mature, new, or not-yet-believers. I highly recommend it.***UPDATE: 03/02/2016***I noticed I misspelled the word "discrete" in my original review, and figured while I was coming back to fix that, I should give an update. :)The Bible has held up well after 1.5 years of use, and I still enjoy it thoroughly. The gold lettering on the spine has started to rub off a little (understandable), and a few threads that run vertically on the seam of the cover (where the brown fabric stops and gray begins) came loose and dangled until I snipped them with some scissors or yanked them off. However, all in all, it is proving to be a well-made Bible and I'm very thankful for my purchase. I'm just now wrapping up a yearly Bible reading plan (missed the New Year's target date... oh well), so I can say that after inspecting 95% of the pages, I haven't seen any defects. :) I would buy/request this Bible again in a heartbeat. (At the $15 current price, it's an excellent value! I think it was $25 when I received mine as a gift.)

This reformats the excellent ESV translation in a book like narrative (without the mamby pamby retranslating like the Message does, or being a subset of the Bible like the Story). No verses, only the verse range along the top. It is like reading a book, and that is where this shines!Verses and chapters were added hundreds of years after the Bible was written, to allow consistent reference, and memorization. But it breaks up the flow and even messes up the context sometimes. Take the verses out and it fixes this. AND I find myself reading more - I'm not thinking "oh I read two chapters, time to quit and do something else".The Epistles were meant to be read as a single letter to the church. Job and Hosea come alive with literary imagery in this format, in my opinion. In the Gospels suddenly Jesus reads like he is having a whole conversation, not just quotable soundbites.You are less likely to take verses out of context.I cannot say enough good things about this!!

I like multiple things about this bible:1. It's a nice size. Not too small, not too big. It's portable enough to pack in a backpack or carry-on comfortably, and with its hard cover, I don't worry about it getting beat up or dog-eared as much.2. The craftsmanship is high quality. It has a library-style cloth and board cover. The binding in the spine is very sturdy, and yet very flexible. Even upon the first opening, I could open it to any page and have it lay flat on the desk, hands free. It seems like this bible will hold up to many years of reading. The pages are thin, but seem substantial enough to withstand normal use without tearing easily. I also love the two ribbon page markers, which I find very useful for holding my own personal reading spot, as well as that of our family reading spot. It also comes in an external cardboard case that you can keep if you want extra protection against drops or jostling.3. I love the "Reader's Bible" style, with no verse numbers or footnotes. Don't get me wrong, I have two other English Bibles that are full of footnotes and verses for more in-depth study, but sometimes it's nice to just sit and read the stories of the bible as a narrative. There is something psychological about that which allows me to read more fluidly and relaxedly without the distractions of extra numbers and letters.4. The English Standard Version translation is lovely. I was raised on the King James Version, and I love its literary sonority and rich history; I love the precision of the New Revised Standard Version (heavily annotated) for my scholarly study, but there is something nice about this very fluid, easy on the eye and ear translation. It just lets you read without calling attention to itself.Overall, whatever your interest in picking up a new Bible, this ESV Reader's Bible will be a good addition to your library.

This is the first single column Bible that that actually feels like a normal book. Several factors make it unique among single column Bibles. The removal of versification, the smaller (and more normal) column width compared to most, and the lack of references are the most notable. This is the closest thing I have ever seen to the Bible presented in the form of a simple book to be read. It is a beautiful thing.The one drawback is the paper thickness. There is noticeable show-through from adjacent pages. This is mitigated somewhat by very good line-matching, but that cannot solve the whole problem. Of course the trade-off is that you get a handy sized book that, while not a thinline, is also not overly thick.All in all, this Bible is a smashing success. Truly worth owning, especially at around $20.This is a review of the cloth-bound edition. I should note that both the brown and the gray are cloth. I had thought that perhaps the gray would be some sort of paper, as is often the case on a 3/4 bound book like this. I was pleasantly surprised however. It has the feel of one of the 'Everyman's Library' volumes.

I have an earlier version of this nerdbook, and was looking forward to an updated copy. Unfortunately, the one I received had multiple sections of the nerdbook removed, making it almost useless to use. The whole point of a nerdbook is to have all the information quickly available. If entire sections of the nerdbook is missing, obvious its function becomes next to useless. The information that was present was good, but the missing sections contained crucial information.

ALL VETERINARY STUDENTS AND VETS MUST GET THIS BOOK. I purchased it awhile ago and wasn't a huge fan...now I am addicted. It has so much information in easy to find and read format. It's extremely helpful and definitely worth the price tag!

I bought this book when I was a vet student (about 11 years ago) and still have and use the old mini-binder version. I have added in my own notes over the years and it has served me well as a quick reference. I bought the new version recently but haven't used it much. I liked the old binder but some of the pages did rip, so I guess the bound version will be more durable. I like the updates that were made. I strongly recommend this book to all vet students! Thank you Dr. Yin.

Book arrived in great condition. Brand new. Was a great addition for my daughter's books for her 4th year vet school work.

This book is great, really helpful, but has any else noticed if theirs is missing any pages? I was looking for information on proteinuria and realized I'm missing pages 21.23 and 21.24. Its not like it got ripped out, it looks like it just didn't make it into the book. I'm really bummed about this and hoping that I'm not missing any other pages but i'm not going to sit down and flip through every page to check. I'd be curious to know if anyone else is missing those pages too though

First, a review of this book, then a comment about the series.We ran into this book about twelve years ago. We were doing a homeschool unit on the Sumerians, and this was a very welcome addition to our curriculum. The kids loved the beautiful pictures, well-researched detail, and delightful story. At the time I thought "too bad this artist doesn't do the rest of the epic".Foolish us -- it would have taken just a little digging to find that she did! So don't stop here, get the rest of the series. This is a masterpiece of both art and boiling a long story down to its essence.

The artwork was lovely. The language was good.It's just such a pity that it wasn't actually the story of Gilgamesh. I purchased it to share this story with my children as part of our studies in literature and history. After pre-reading it, I won't even bother reading it to them. I haven't got time to un-teach. It's simply not Gilgamesh. They'd be better off watching that Star Trek episode than this drivel. They'd come to a more actual understanding of the myth-cycle.

Re "Gilgamesh the King": My long attention span 3 year old is smitten with this book and has requested it twice a day for a week. She loves the illustrations which are charming and not dark. This volume ends on a happy note -- good transforms evil thru the power of generosity and love. If this doesn't sound like the epic as you remember it, well, technically it is not, but the liberties the author has taken with the story make for better reading for the preschool set! I think age appropriate versions are an excellent way to introduce materials which can become increasingly complex over time. If you are aiming for a telling which is close to the original, this is not the book for you. THIS volume succeeds in reaching listeners who can tolerate a couple paragraphs of text per page with an uplifting message and visual imagry consistent w the art of the region. Quite an accomplishment!

Age Recommendation: 8 - up; Around eight children start to develop a taste in historical books, such as legends. Gilgamesh is a not as well-known epic about the Mesopotamia region. The picture book is also part of a three book series.Summary: Gilgamesh was sent by the Sun God to rule over the city of Uruk. He was part god, and part man. He did not have any friends, and was a cruel king. He decided to build a wall around his city. The people in his city originally supported his wall, but eventually grew tired and frustrated. His people prayed to the Sun God, and the sun god sent Enkidu. Enkidu lived with the animals, and was a good man. Enkidu prevented a man from killing an animal with his god-like strength. The man told Gilgamesh about Enkidu's strength, and Gilgamesh was furious. Gilgamesh sends a beautiful singer to the woods to lure Enkidu to the city. Gilgamesh wanted to kill him in front of the city to reinforce his reputation. The beautiful singer and Enkidu fell in love. Enkidu left the forest and his animal friends, and went to the city to challenge Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh and En kidu fought, but were equal in strength. Gilgamesh tripped, and would have died if Enkidu did not save him. After Enkidu saved Gilgamesh, they became friends. Once Gilgamesh had a friend, he stopped work on the wall, and there was peace in the city.Critical Review: Gilgamesh the King is written and illustrated by Ludmila Zeman. Zeman begins the picture book in the expected, "Long ago in the land of... " which sets the stage for a traditional folktale (p. 1). The illustrations also support the folktale, by using `ancient' looking images. The colors also look gold based, which makes the images look older. The images bring the words to life. For example, when the story is talking about all the men in the city building a giant wall around the city. You can see the magnitude of people, and the height of the huge wall (p. 3-4). Without any words, it would still be very easy to tell the epic of Gilgamesh based on the pictures. Although this story is part of a trilogy, it can stand alone. It has closure, and tells a complete story. Also, some historical information about the epic of Gilgamesh is included after the story. I appreciate the use of rhetorical questions throughout the text. For example, after Enkidu sees a man killing an animal, he asks himself, "Why would anyone want to do that?" (p. 6). The text includes both more complex sentences. For example, "The earth shook and lightning flashed across the sky, as if the gods themselves were fighting for control of the world" (p. 16). The text also includes short, simple sentences. For example, "He was no longer alone. He had found a friend" (p. 19). The longer sentences tell an elaborate story, while the shorter sentences focus on the meaning of the sentences. The book kept me engaged as a college student, and I think an intermediate reader would definitely be interested in the historical significance of one of the first epics ever written down, and the action of the folktale itself.

This is the third book in the trilogy. It is beautifully illustrated. I used it in school after showing a video on great literature in which the author explains her motivation for writting the books.

Using for school. My 3rd grader was able to see, understand and describe the comparison and contrast to the Biblical stories and see the difference between man made versions and the God-given true version of historical events.

This book was going to be a birthday present for my grandson, and it is a beautiful and meaningful book with gorgeous illustrations, a retelling of one of humankind's oldest stories. But the book arrived in a thin flexible package, which allowed the book, a paperback, to crease in several places. It is not present quality.

Bought for 5- and 7-year old boys who are studying Sumerian civilization, and enjoyed immensely by both. The writing is evocative but not too course, and the last page of each of this series has an overview of historical and thematic aspects of the story and time that were very useful for home study. We used these in concert with an online interactive archaeological excavation program out of the University of Chicago, and I think the fact that the illustrations evoked the kinds of artifacts the kids found really made concrete that this story was not just like the other fictions books my kids have, but a story that functions as a window into a long-gone time. We also really enjoyed discussing how themes in this story (such as the flood and the serpent and immortality) would come up later, both in Greek mythology and in Christian mythology.Altogether a fantastical account of an already interesting story with evocative illustrations. The only negative is that I wish something like this existed for general Sumerian mythology, as the author is adept at referring to otherwise non-child-friendly themes in ways that suggest but do not elaborate.
