I preorderd this book and got it delivered on its release date because I had such high hopes for it. I wanted to love it. But honestly, I'm not sure it will work for the average, working person/family. To follow the specific meal plans, you will need to set aside a significant portion of your day to cook. Day 3 of Intro Week is literally hours of prep and cook time. Also, several recipes, in addition to the daily morning smoothie, require a scoop of a specific Rootcology protein powder which runs $80 per canister on Amazon. Obviously at this price point, it may be not feasible for many people's household budget, especially if you're a mom who is having to increase the recipe sizes to feed a big family.On the upside, it's a beautiful book, lovely pictures, and great info on Hashimotos. Just maybe not the best solution for a busy, working, middle class family.

I was one of the lucky ones to get an advanced copy of this book and wow, it's fabulous! First of all, you need to know that Izabella has a way of making the hard stuff understandable. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is a complex condition, but when Izabella breaks it down, you know exactly what to do. And this cookbook makes it practical with lots of delicious recipes that everyone will enjoy. You see, that's the secret to success when you're trying to accomplish a health goal--making it work for everyone at your family dinner table. User friendly, great photos and of course, delicious food! This book belongs in your kitchen!

I'm trying to eat healthy, so I can heal my body. This cookbook is perfect! Written by a true expert in the pharmacology of food, the recipes are simple, incredible, and tested by real people. I know this is a cookbook that will live in my kitchen for many years to come.

As a functional medicine clinician of 12 years that specializes in autoimmunity, I find this book is a breath of fresh air! In the autoimmune realm many of the cookbooks out there lack flavorful recipes or are overly complicated due to the amount of ingredients or steps involved. This book solves those problems and more! The recipes and ingredients are so approachable and delicious (and it's got beautiful pictures). The addition of the nutrition information, FAQ's, and meal plans are very helpful too. Even the busiest person will be able to make these recipes with ease. I've been waiting for a resource like this to share with my patients for a LONG time. Thank you Izabella for all of the love you've poured into this book.On a personal note, I have a husband with Hashimoto's and we've done various versions of Paleo and AIP over the years. We have all of the cookbooks and this one is my favorite! We've made the chili and the carrot-ginger-pear soup and loved them both. Can't wait to try more!!

I collect cookbooks and was eagerly awaiting this one because I suffer from hypothyroidism. It does not disappoint. Dr.. Wentz explains in layman's terms how Hashimoto's develops and how good nutrition based on a root-cause approach can help those with thyroid disease.. I tried a few recipes so far and they were fabulous.. What's more, they're easy to prepare and don't require a lot of complicated ingredients. I highly recommend this cookbook!

Izabella's latest creation is a great continuation of her overall philosophy of heal the body and not manage the disease! Her books and teaching have been essential to our families in their quest to alleviate chronic inflammation and reverse autoimmunity!

It is a breathtaking read. It is a mix of Susanna Kearsley and Daphne Du Maurier. It is a mystery and romance covering two time periods. There are windswept coastal waters of Scotland and an abandoned home on an island. I read this book in one day! I was guessing until the final pages. My heart is racing because I simply don't know what to say about how gripping this book is. Please let it be your next read.

Comparisons to Kate Morton and Daphne DuMaurier are justified, in my opinion. I don't think anyone would mean to say this author is exactly the same, but it has the flavor of those books and was very engrossing. The settings are gothic, mysterious and haunting, and the story regarding Theo Blake, the old house, and the bones underneath it kept me reading on into the night. I will definitely hope this author writes on!

I enjoy reading historical fiction, and this book has a dual storyline/timeline with both settings in Scotland. Sarah Maine did a wonderful job tying the two stories together. I was even surprised as to the identity of the body because I assumed it was another character. Another reviewer compared the author to Susanna Kearsley, and I would agree. Kearsley is one of my favorite authors. If I had one complaint about this book, it would be about the lack of transition between some paragraphs. Sudden changes from one paragraph to the next (locations and actions) with no transition as to how/why/when characters got there were confusing and distracting. Otherwise, I really liked the story and look forward to reading more of the author's work.

Many have already said this, I realise, but The House between Tides by Sarah Maine reminded me very much of Kate Morton's work.This book started a little slowly for me. I wasn't immediately engaged in either the events of 'now' or those of 1910. I liked both of our main protagonists however: the somewhat down-trodden Hetty; and the coming-into-her-own Beatrice respectively and kept turning the pages eager to learn their stories.Theo Blake's family built Muirlan House and his father uprooted locals to build his stunning white elephant in the Outer Hebrides. Although his memories of the place are bittersweet, Theo takes his new wife Beatrice there in 1910.When the book opens however, we're meeting Theo's sister Emily who's taking ownership of the house and boarding it up - entombing it in many ways - in 1945. Where it lies dormant until inherited by Hetty Deveraux over half a century later.This isn't a riveting read, but it's intriguing. The story unravelling in present day mirrors that of the early 20th century reflecting the debate between: respecting the needs and livelihoods of the local community and the area's wildlife; versus development and desires of the privileged.Read the full review on my site:[...]3.5 stars

Amazing, complex and fascinating debut. Hard to believe this is a first effort. The author uses similar approaches to her subject as Kate Morton does in her books, and this is almost as good as KM'sr "Secret Keeper:" We have two plot lines for the complex subject, one taking place in 1910 and the other in 2010. We follow the developments of both as they intertwine and it is hard to put the book down. One tends to assume certain details that appear to be indicated in the plot development only to find out that the assumption is totally wrong, when the final factual details are revealed.I highly recommend this book and I look forward to this author's further efforts. Her talents are apparent and I hope she will use them and not disappoint us.

I got this book not expecting too much. I'm not much of a romance reader, but I do like mysteries, and I'd been reading a rather boring series that I needed to take a break from, saw this for $1.99, and bought it. Then I started reading it, and basically, didn't put it down til I was done.It's not really a mystery, though there is a mystery at the heart of the novel. And there are two love stories, but not too much for this reader, possibly because the characters were so clearly drawn, and I was involved with them right away (more so with the historical couple at first than the present story line, but I warmed to that as well). The book had so much I look for in a novel: compelling, complex characters, a strong sense of place (oh, how I want to visit the Scottish coast now!), and a sense of history and justice that really kept me going. The inner (historical) story takes place in 1910/1911, and this was a time of profound change for the world in general, but esp. Britain, and I found the conflict between landowners and land users to be powerful--and while I understand the author didn't want to overwhelm the narrative with too much history, I could have taken even more (and I began to read about crofting and the croft clearances and forced emigration from Scotland after I read the book, to give me a better sense of the historical moment). It's a beautiful book, really, and I found myself unexpectedly teary at the end of it.I'm going to read the rest of this author's novels now (one out and one to come). This book was an unexpected pleasure

I enjoyed this dark book, full of grim foreboding due to a corpse found in the old island mansion. You think you know who it is, but you will be surprised. The mystery will hold your attention until the end. I had guessed myself and was dreading the big revelation of its identity. Ha! Well, this story centers on the tormented Scottish painter, Theo Blake, an unpleasant, controlling man who grew insane in later life. I was fascinated by the weaving together of the island characters in 1910 and those in 2017. The author intentionally makes Hettie, the modern-day heir to Muirland House, seem a lot like Beatrice, the unloved wide of Blake. Plus, modern-day James Cameron is so much like 1910 Cameron Forbes. You are rooting for them as the story and plotlines unfold and it ends with all loose ends being rather too neatly tied up in a pretty bow. It was not the ending I expected, but I have to admit, I was relieved. A very good read.

For content, I give Hannah's book 5 stars. His essays are straightforward, the science behind his approach makes sense, and all of the exercises seem safe and well tested. For usability, however, give it a 3. Frankly, it is difficult to learn somatic exercises from a book unless you already know what you are doing. And the illustrations in this paperback are poor quality. I worked with this book for some time feeling no results because I was not doing the exercises correctly. That being said, I give Hannah's book a sum of 4 stars because there is an art and intelligence to somatics hard to find elsewhere, it's very affordable, and quite useful when accompanied by supplementary materials.I highly recommend purchasing the downloadable audio guides called "The Cat Stretches" by Hannah's student, Lawrence Gold, to accompany this book. It is so much easier to do the exercises correctly with a professional talking you through. You won't have to stop constantly to read, which allows you to move through the lessons faster with greater concentration. Most importantly, the audio lessons establish an effective pace for the exercises. Pacing is key to moving somatically, which is quite unlike typical stretching or strength training you will get from your physical therapist.Done correctly, somatic movement feels like the kind of "stretch" you might do with a great big yawn in bed when you wake up in the morning. There is stretching aspect, but not in the common sense of holding muscle in a lengthened position (the word "stretch" seems to be an obstacle for the somatic instructors to the point they will say "no stretching", which is more confusing than helpful). Equally important is the contracting aspect, through which the brain (re-)learns how to exert voluntary control over muscles that may be chronically tight due to stress or trauma, or weak due to lack of use. That's the gist of it. The cat stretch series developed by Thomas Hannah will balance out the body for better posture and improved walking. Once you learn the basic cat stretch program, you can find more specific exercises to your condition online from Hannah's students, Lawrence Gold and Martha Peterson, both of whom provide coaching (though I have done a coaching myself). You can even develop your own exercises. And you can find opportunities to move more somatically in other activities.I took my time to work through the lessons (abut 6 months) with the help of Lawrence Gold's audio coaching. Now I spend about 30-40 minutes a day doing somatic exercises. In time I expected to reduce my practice to 15 minutes. Normal people, who aren't dealing with a very old trauma response like I am, should be able to work through the lessons in 8-12 weeks, as suggested.FYI. Martha Peterson, who was also a student of Hannah, has updated Hannah's Somatics with much better illustrations. However, a book is still a book, with all the difficulties of having to stop frequently to read until you know the exercises, and the inability to articulate pacing in words. Peterson has some good video clips online to illustrate how this all works. She also offers a DVD, which could be useful in the way I found Gold's audio program useful. I don't have her video. But, for me, I am still partial to audio because it is very relaxing, and once you get going you won't be watching a video anyway. I have found very useful tips in Peterson's book. But, in either case, Hannah or Peterson, a book serves well as an introduction and reference, not an effective manual for beginners.

This book changed my life. A head injury in 1996 left me with some challenges that would prevent me from ever again being as physical as I once had been. Inactivity combined with the normal aging process had found me VERY tight and restricted in my movements.What I found in this book allowed me to reach a level of ease of movement that I may have NEVER had since being a "rubber" 12 year old kid. Make no mistake about it. You WILL have to DO the exercises.....knowing about them isn't going to cut it. If you can commit to a few minutes a day, every day...in 30 days you will never look back.

Fantastic book. Thomas Hanna was a genius. He was a philosopher first (was even friends with Albert Camus). Hanna is responsible for coining the term "somatics" in the seventies, but it's now being used by unrelated modalities in a more general sense. Inspired in part by the work of Moshé Feldenkrais, he developed something truly extraordinary. I very much appreciate that he put philosophy into practical action. I do not suggest following videos on YouTube claiming to be showing you Hanna's work. They don't get it. Follow the book, and do not treat this work like normal movement or exercise. It is brain retraining. Best source I know of for more information is Somatics.org.

I follow a somatic yoga practice with local instructors who have special training in that hybrid approach. Somatics and yoga did cure some severe shoulder pain I was having, that massage and physical therapy did not. So I am a convert to this approach of self-awareness, mobility and healing. This book was recommended by those instructors to me. However, while I like learning about the foundations of the method, the illustrations using an Ikea doll are a bit hard to translate to my own body. I like the Martha Peterson somatics book a bit more for following the illustrations. Thank you Thomas Hanna for giving us this gift of a self-healing practice and awareness building.Yoga adds a dimension to somatics by bringing in the breathing and meditation aspects as well as the strength piece. After you work through Thomas Hanna's approach, or even while you are working through it, you still need to build strength. Certain yoga approaches, like gentle Hatha, are more compatible with the somatics philosophy than others. Definitely there is a "no pain" mentality to this approach that works.

Takes Moshe Feldenkrais's teachings and makes them usable. Read this and start getting rid of those aches and pains and limitations. Think supple at seventy.

I have read many many books about Walt Disney. This book gave a different viewpoint. It was a fast read. 1928-2016-discussed movies, parks and personalities. I love Walt and what he accomplished and that his legacy carries on today.

The book was informative, but I found the timeline format to be distracting. In that regard, the title is very misleading as it’s more timeline format than actual story.

Great read makes you want to know more. I had a lot of those "oh really moments"

This 9th Edition of Coe's The Maya, now co-authored with eminent Maya scholar Stephen Houston, is a major improvement over the last several additions. Houston's expertise in Maya writing means that the book is up-to-the-minute on many issues relating to Classic Maya religion and courtly life, and the chapter on "Maya Thought and Culture" has been almost completely re-written to reflect Houston's expertise on the subject. Similarly, this edition rolls in some major recent discoveries about Preclassic Maya civilization which are most welcome, and an appendix has been added listing the names of significant Maya rulers and the dates known for their reigns, which will be helpful for those trying to puzzle through references to specific characters in Maya history.Houston's contributions are also noteworthy for incorporating bite-size summaries of the ideas laid out in his own books for specialists, including brief treatments of morality and personhood, gender roles/norms, and the material world that will be familiar to readers of, say, The Memory of Bones, The Classic Maya, or The Life Within.The illustrations are wonderful, and there are even more of them than in previous editions. Some images that are exceedingly hard to find have been worked into the present edition, which alone are worth the cost of the book.My only real gripe is that the style of the prose is, at times, distractingly dated. In part this is because portions of the text are unchanged (or barely changed) from the original 1966 edition, at which time the book's target audience would presumably have understood the references to Pilgrim's Progress and been comfortable with the occasional Latinate stylistic flourishes. These days, however, a typical college-aged (or even college-educated) reader is unlikely to find such flourishes helpful or accessible. Some of these, such as a reference to a goddess that is "easy with her virtue" (p. 255) and "dwarves and other malformed people" who comprise "the most bizarre courtiers (at least from our vantage)" (p. 93), are likely to distract or alienate, rather than engage, a younger readership.That being said, this is still the best book going for someone who wants to do some basic "reading up" on the Maya before visiting ruins or wading into a more detailed treatment like Sharer and Traxler's The Ancient Maya. The 9th edition is a major step forward in terms of its content, and I look forward to following The Maya through many editions into the future.

If you're expecting to get a clear, simple story of what the Ancient Maya were "really like," sorry, you won't get it here. What you WILL get is a very thorough, but very readable, survey of the challenging archeological history of the Ancient Maya that makes it impossible to give simple answers about their culture. Where answers are available, though, this book presents them squarely into context, and shows how the scholars got to their conclusion. As a result, it's also an excellent field guide for tourists -- for every Mayan site large and small, Coe explains what to look for, and how it furthered our understanding.

This, the 9th edition of the book, contains updated information based by on both field excavations and academic research. Excellent and detailed review of Mayan civilization through the Late Post-Classic. Coverage of both thematic subjects , e.g., history, art, writing; as well as all major and many less prominent Mayan sites including integrated information on thematic issues. Maps included for the three major (Pre, Classic, Post) eras showing Mayan cities (but not contemporary ones, which would have been helpful). A variety of photos from different sources are included as well as a significant number of well- done drawings. Very useful references appear at end of volume. At 900+ pages not an easy read but writing is lucid with a minimum of academic jargon. Contains intro to Mayan cuneiform writing but more extensive coverage is available in other recent publications ( see especially Teadung Maya Art, by stone and Zender, 2011).

For scholarship and completeness this book deserves SIX stars out of five. Unfortunately I was looking for something less scholarly and more accessible. Lots of material on architecture, art, and demographics but the story is too deep and complex for the casual reader.

This was a very interesting book that helped me fill in some history that I had not learned ( or forgot) in the past. There was a huge amount of detail in this book that made reading all the way through, but it was also interesting enough to keep me reading.My major complaint is that there were not enough maps to help the reader keep track of all the places described, especially because the narrative jumped around quite a bit.Before I read this book I watched several programs on TV about the Mayan civilization that has greatly expanded based on the ground penetrating radar that has revealed many formerly unknown cities and temples. I recommend this book to anyone else who saw those shows and wants more information.

Not sure why, but I have always had a fascination with the Mayan culture. So looking for a book for a trip, I ran across this book and I am glad I did. This book with several updates is not the easiest book to read and is more like a textbook than a book for pleasure. However, it definitely leaves no stone unturned and that background is fascinating as well. While after reading the book I am still no expert on the subject of the Maya I do believe that I have a much great understanding of their culture, way of life and struggles. I am currently looking to book a trip to the region to see some of the ruins.

Coe and Houston have made this edition the best ever. (We have the 7th edition and have read others over the years). Succinct, clear and comprehesive; a must for any Mesoamerican library!

This is an excellent text book, full of facts and occasionally a few paragraphs of prose in story form. The author has a first hand knowledge of the research into the Mayans and traces a path from prehistoric times through through to the population of five million Mayans inhabiting today the Yucatan Peninsula. It is a shame that the spanish invaders of 1530 and beyond have obliterated much of the history and meanings of the many glyphs. There is still a lot to uncover in the jungle the same as the buried Egyptian civilization under the sand.

I bought this book for my daughter's school project, and I was very disappointed.This states that the Women's March demonstrated against Donald Trump following his inauguration, but failed to state that millions of people were extremely happy we had a President that Respects Life from conception all the way to birth and after, unlike Hillary Clinton.This book states that Trump pulls out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, but failed to say that Pulling Out The Trans-Pacific Partnership was done because it was sold to Republicans as a free trade agreement. Unfortunately, that free trade agreement also had a DANGEROUS erosion of American sovereignty built into it. It allowed a Trans-Pacific Partnership Commission filled with unelected bureaucrats to make rulings that had the potential to impact American policy in regards to “free speech, gun rights, environmental regulation, border enforcement, the Iran nuclear deal, immigration and refugee policy, and the Israeli–Palestinian standoff.” No free trade agreement is worth undermining American sovereignty and thanks to Trump, it’s not something we have to worry about any longer.This book is very biased, and I think it's interesting that there is no author written for this book. I will not ever buy another book from Baby Professors Books.
