This book would have gotten 5 stars had there been color images. That being said, there is a very well printed interference colors chart in the back of the book. One of the things I love about Nesse's books is that he has the ability to write so that the content is not excessively dry. The text from my petrology class poorly explained optics and was filled with more jargan than anything. Nesse uses illustrations and explains when jargan is necessary. If you are a petrology instructor, I highly suggest this book for your class.

This book provided many great examples and diagrams which made learning optical mineralogy much more satisfying. Anything that was not thoroughly explained in lecture could be accurately and extensively described in this text. The book wasn't without its mistakes, but then again, which textbooks are totally free from typos and misprints?

The book is well written and well organized if dense. I would have been lost (and am still barely keeping my head above water) without the useful descriptions of obtaining optical properties in thin section. Would recommend this book for the subject.. my professor basically drew his lectures straight from it.

lack of illustrations and photos

IS A VERY GOOD BOOK, VERY HIGH LEVEL EXPLAIN, BUT EXCELLENT FOR A POST GRADUATE LEVEL, I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SEEN COLOR IMAGES AND MORE MICROCOSPIC PICTURES OF THE CONCEPTS BUT IS JUST THE ONLY ONE THING THAT I WOULD CHANGE

This is a shortened version only about petrographic scopes. It is missing a lot of the information that is included in the standard length Intro to Mineralogy.

It's just a book I needed for my major, so I don't know how much this review is really going to help people. Nesse sometimes explains things well, and other times, the book is very convoluted.Fast shipping though, so that was awesome.

It is the best book on optical mineralogy. I like it very much. but it is very silimar with the 3rd edition. the author only made few revisements.
